Tigers' wasteful kicking has Hardwick worried

RICHMOND’S errant goalkicking has coach Damien Hardwick concerned after wasteful periods of play in the win over the Brisbane Lions on Thursday night.

The Tigers scored a wasteful 2.8 in the first quarter at the Gabba while holding the Lions to just one point. When the Lions took the lead just after half-time it appeared the Tigers may pay dearly for the lapse.

The Tigers steadied for a 43-point win.

“It [bad goalkicking] has been a common theme (and) we’re trying to address it the best we can," Hardwick said.

"We’re having a lot of shots but they’re not going through the big sticks. Even last week ... we kicked 1.4 with two out on the full (in the first quarter).

“What you find is you only get a certain amount of momentum in games, so we’re just not making the most of that, which we’re continuing to work on."

We have very few what you would categorize as skilful players in our forward 50. If Jack isn't getting then ball then poor kicking for goal from others is going to be a regular occurrence. It's no secret that our skill level across the squad would be quite low compared to the top teams so we need to have players the like of Lennon in the team solely to improve this area, poor goalkicking and turnovers are just suicidal in this day and age.

We need to move the ball into the fifty quicker... It's not rocket science. If we persist in slowing the ball down and going backwards we will always get pushed wide.

i agree with most of that. but we dont just need players who kick well. lennon i hope is a well rounded player and does most things well with kicking being very good.
we have so many who are proficient or even very good in one thing but lacking in most other areas. to me its why so many of em are so inconsistent week to week and even in games. clubs put some work into what they do well if they have a good batch of games and then its back to mediocrity as they have no other way counter.

Hardwick praised his side’s ability to create scoring opportunities, but said the Tigers must take their chances at the MCG this weekend after a slow start saw them kick 11.20 against the Lions, including 2.8 in the opening term.

I think we’ve kicked 8.20 in the first quarters where, funnily enough from a scoring shot point of view, we’re one of the better sides in the competition,” he said.

"Unfortunately it’s not goals. We’ve addressed that this week, we’ve focused on a few areas we think we can help improve, but we’ve just got to make sure we get the scoreboard pressure on early.

“What happens if you miss goals (is that) you end up changing something you’re doing because the scoreboard is not going your way.”

Dimma in his 5th season is emulating the footy Danny Frawley inspired us to play in his 5th season.
Seems logical to me.
We aren't stagnant but we're getting there. :thumbsup
