The List

This is just my opinion on what needs to be done as far types of players go within  list structure   to give us the best chance of having depth in all areas moving forward.it will take time obviously.

rucks 3 -  stephenson 31 maric 28, hampson 26.
cut 1
need to get 2-  why. orren is 31 and a battler. maric is 28, we need to have a decent succesion plan in place for these types of ruckmen, a 22 23 yr old and a rookie would be ideal. we need blokes who can ultimately do what ivan does. cut orren and bring in some development rucks please. ideal
 #4

ruck/fwd 3 - vickery 23, griffiths 22, mcbean 19.
cut 1
need 0 - these guys are adequate even elton could pinch hit if need be. they are not going to be #1  sole ruckmen another reason  why id chase two more  of the type above. ideal
#2

kpf - 3 riewoldt 25, vickery 23, elton 20,
cut 0
need 2 - definately need a junior power fwd in our system we also need not so much a kpd but a 192 cm jack gunstan type of which we have none. if vickery and elton dont come on we could be in strife so lets cover these positions that take a long time to develop. if those two dont make it we could be waiting another 5 yrs to find some real help for riewoldt or we will be relying on f/a
would ideally like 6 out and out kpf tall forwads but we do have mcbean griffiths and even vickery who can do the role.
 ideal #4

tall fwd 0 -
cut 1 - that is if people wish to classify a edwards as a tall which he is not.
need 2 -  that gunstan type  or lynch would do, thee is possibly  ohanlon who is a little on the short side.
 ideal #2

kpd  3  - chaplin 28, rance 24, astbury 23,
cut 0 -
need 2- definately short a very good big 1v1 player and with chaplins form and age we really should have a junior in development also  but dont.
ideal #4

tall def 3 - grimes 22, darrou 20, mcintosh 20,
cut 0 - darrou could be in strife, though numbers are okay and they are young.
need 0 -
ideal #2

personally would like to start loading up with the talls and pruning back as time elapses. would also only be targeting pure mids for now as well.

mids 17  - foley 28, knights 27, deledio 27, jackson 27, thomas 27, grigg 25, cotchin 24, gordon 24, helbig 22, martin 22, miles 22, conca 21, ellis 20, arnot 20,  vlastuin 19, williams 19, lennon 18
cut 4
need 3
ideal #16 depending on what flankers can go thru the middle.

the following is determined by how many mids can perform these roles well. we do have some good def and fwd among our mids so are in a position to hedge the bets a little if we wish.

med def 3 morris 25, dea 22, batchelor 22,
cut 2
need 2
ideal #  4 ?? ellis deledio vlastuin all mids conca may not need 4.

sml def 1 - houli 25.
cut 1
need  2
ideal # 2 ??

med fwd 3  - edwards 30,  petterd 24,  ohanlon 20.
cut 2
need 3.
ideal # 4 ????, again martin knights deledio lennon gordon may not need 4.

sml fwd 4 - king 30, s edwards 25,  lloyd 24, banfield 23,
cut 3
need 2
ideal # 2 ????

any way just some thoughts on where i think we need to get our list to obviously there is room for a little tweaking depending on the types you have.

Elements of the list is malakies. We all know it.
Claw's idea is fine.
We can still be competitive but need to prune a little to get better.
In an ideal world we would have been at the summit in 2015-16 but Dimma needs to get his head of the pockets of the marketing dept trying to sell memberships and get back to his original 2010 plan and return to not cutting corners.
Need to target free agency big fish as well as reinvesting with the draft and look to trading some of the excess nobodies to others looking to top up for picks in the ND.
We know what we need its about how we need to get it and what we need to target.
Club has to rectify this now otherwise by 2016 we will spiralling to the same gloom under Miller/Spud/Wallace and we know how long it takes us to get a tokenistic finals series under our belts.

Great contribution.

Claw isn't far off in his assessment.
What we lack most are some skilled pact runners (ala Mundy, Dangerfield), a third tall (Gunston) & another fwd crumber.
Basically we need to improve our finishing skills and find players who can hit the scoreboard.

Gordon & Lloyd have certainly helped in this area but we need some more top shelf talent.
Too much cake and not enough cream.

Yes, unlike your Spanish league tables.

the idea is to look at the player types and numbers of each type we need to have good balance. if i name players who should be cut the whole theme of the thread would just get hijacked.

Good post Claw.  I enjoyed the read and agree with most of it.  I don't have the time at present to respond in detail but your post was largely on the money!   :thumbsup

yep im aware of that.
we have plenty who we can cut for now. its not about one yr. we cant cut all of the duds in one go. so ive kept  some players who could go into the cut group later.

to me the list structure should go something close to the following. now this is purely an established list in numbers. and just my opinion on what the ideal numbers should be.

16 talls - rucks kpps and third talls. - why well most sides go into most games with 7 or 8 talls, so with a list of 44 and a reserves side we should be mirroring what we do in the seniors.
18 mids - inside and outside. -  why? again its the mirror effect even richmond goes into games with a minimum of 9 pure mids usually more.
12 medium/sml  flankers,  depending on what mids can perform these roles. obviously theres only 44 spots and ive named 46. there is room for tweaking.   theoretically with lennon, knights, deledio, martin, vlastuin ellis all mids who can play on the flanks we could cut this number to 6 . this actually allows us to load up in other areas. - why again most sides will go into games with 2 or 3 specialist sml/med defenders and a couple of sml/med fwds depending on the mids. so again mirror what happens in the seniors.

if we do this we should theoretically have  like for like players at various stages of development in the magoos.  to me it aint rocket science.
