cant believe they gave him 4 weeks. he did nothing wrong at all not a thing. if the bump was not already dead it really is now. the game just sucks it really does. so disappointed at how this game has gone in the last 20 or so yrs

I thought it was only 2 ? But I completely agree, he was within 5 m of the ball wasn't he ?! Soft and pathetic by the afl

He was given 4 and it was reduced to 2 because of his good record

Bottom line is Ward ended up with concussion and may not play this week. You bump at your own peril these days and if the bloke you bump ends up injured you're in big trouble.

Not a fan of the rule as it is now but they have been pretty consistent with it.

I'd debate whether it was within 5 metres. Reckon you could argue it was off the ball so throw that in the mix and even though Ward should have been aware it was coming; Douglas was always going to go. Main question was how many weeks

I always look at these things this way: What would we expect if it was a Richmond player who copped the bump? Would think there'd be a lot here who'd be saying 2 weeks isn't enough.

Cowardly off the ball hits are fair game now or 20 years ago.

My first reaction was that he would get 4 so I'm not surprised at all that he did.  It was much further than 5 mts off the ball, Ward wasn't involved directly in the play and shouldn't have been expecting contact in the position/situation he was in.  He ended up with concussion from an off the ball, unnecessary, full force contact.  Nothing to do with being a girl's sport, there is no place in the game for cheap shots off the ball - it's a far better sport than one that needs that crap to showcase it.  Weak as pee from Douglas and got what it deserved.

Did Chuck, for 15 years at senior level back in the 70's & 80's when the game was much less scrutinized and far rougher so I know all about country football and taking hits off the ball.  I just don't think there is a place in the modern game for it any more.  We want our game to grow and be accepted in the wider community and that sort of thuggery sets it back with the NRL as a home for 'good old boys' who never grew a brain.  We don't need it to showcase the amazing skills and physical prowess that sets our game apart and it doesn't make the modern game any less tough or physical than it ever was.  Let the rugby codes wallow in the 'goonery' of the past while we allow the football to do the talking.

Pretty hard to give it back twice as hard if you are concussed and don't know what day it is!
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.
