Vickery shines for Richmond

  Brent Diamond
     The Age
    April 26, 2014

Richmond forward Ty Vickery provided a steady hand with three crucial second-half goals in his quest for form in Friday's draw against Frankston in the VFL at Frankston Oval.

While it wasn't enough to ensure the Tigers a victory, Vickery's big grab just outside the goal square in the third term and goal lifted his confidence, while stopping a run of three consecutive Frankston goals.

Jackson Coleman helped ignite Frankston's charge with two of those goals before Vickery and Aaron Edwards, playing against his former team, steadied with late goals to give the Tigers a 28-point buffer at the last change.

Vickery again held up a fast-finishing Frankston, who had got within five-points after a run of four consecutive goals, by bouncing through his second goal and minutes later took a strong mark over opponent Scott Simpson to kick another.

The 23-year-old finished with 3.2, 17 disposals, seven marks and 17 hit-outs, spending time up forward, in the ruck and on the bench.

Tigers VFL coach Tim Clarke said he was impressed with Vickery's output, particularly in the second half as he attacked the ball with purpose when the match was on the line.

Richmond coach Damian Hardwick said during the week that Vickery, in his second consecutive VFL outing, needed to work on different parts of his game including his defensive pressure to have a chance of returning for next Sunday's clash against Geelong.

Certainly, there was no lack of effort as Vickery sensed the need to lift when required.

Edwards, with 26 disposals and two goals, was superb in his return from injury, while Anthony Miles racked up 30 touches along with Nathan Batsanis. Liam McBean, who is yet to make his AFL debut, and Ryan Bathie each finished with three goals.

Vickery kicked 3.

McBean kicked 3.

Bathie kicked 3.

Would like to know who drew the toughest opponent and how many of each goals were cheapys over the back or gimmes set up by tye hard work of others.

Anyway, the last thing we need is to bring back a pea heart off the back of one ok game against a crapola vfl team

McBean has better form over the last few weeks from what I understand

I reckon he did well.Reads the play well,is very good by foot. And what surprised me was that he seemed more than fair overhead.Must be darn close to senior call up..My apologies for leaving him out of my summary yesterday.

Did a couple of very nice things certainly has footy smarts. He did a very nice tap back over his head to a player running past behind, was an awesome piece of play! He also took a couple of good overhead marks but on the flip side he fluffed a easy kick running into the 50, had mcBean on a perfect lead and he tried to stab it low the ball pretty much didn't get off the ground and landed 10 meters in front of McBean. He should have hit Beano on the chest lace out.
Also I didn't think he got involved in the contest enough, hung around the outside a little Grigg style, would have been nice to see him go a little harder at times.
He's certainly showing all the signs of being a good player but I wouldn't be elevating him on yesterday's game alone.

he was excellent overhead as a junior. He's a bit like Lids minus the speed.

Yeah he even disappears for long periods during matches too.

Didn't do that as a junior. Where did you find that info from?
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Oh. People around here bag the club so much, it's difficult to know who is joking and who is serious.

just heard on ABC that the last time we met Frankston as Richmond Reserves in 2000 was also a draw , so consecutive draws 14 years apart

Its clear the club has put 0% work into defending momentum.

After the loss in the final vs Carlton where we gave up a lead of 30 odd points, this is inexcusable. Absolute disgrace that we have to cop this sort of crap. The playing list is as strong as it has been for 10 years yet regardless of who we play against if they have the momentum we have no structure, no leadership, no tactics or direction to deal with it. Its obvious that the best players in the team are left with the responsibility of dealing with wrestling the momentum back.

FFS, Fix it.
Go Tigers!
