2006 fixture survey
« on: July 11, 2005, 05:13:35 AM »
The AFL site has running a 2006 fan fixture survey: http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=aflfocus&spg=display&articleid=214191

What would be your wishlist is terms of when and where Richmond games are played next year? our rivalry round opponent? who should we play twice a year? interstate games? etc...

Mine are:

* Mostly Friday night and Sat arvo games for us. Less Sunday games and get rid of the Pies from Friday night. Who wants to watch a crap team like Collingwood send everyone to sleep kicking only 7 goals a match  :sleep.

* Our rivalry team should be the Blues not the Dogs  ???. Guaranteed 8 points a year playing them twice too  :thumbsup.

* Play MCG co-tenants (Melbourne and Hawthorn) at the MCG  ::).

* Don't play our home games at Telstra Dome against teams whose home ground is Telstra Dome. They got it right this year with our games against the Saints but we play our home game against the Dogs in round 20 at the Dome.

This week is our last game at the 'G for the year unless we get a home final. What a joke given it's only round 16 :banghead

Hopefully the new MCC deal will give us more games at the MCG from now on but it looks like the extra matches are all going to the Pies  ::).

------------------------------------

From The Age:
By Caroline Wilson
July 12, 2005

. The MCG will be guaranteed a minimum 45 home-and-away games each season, four more than its current deal.

· The stadium will be allocated at least 10 of the best 12 home-and-away games.

· More Friday night fixtures will be held at the MCG during the warmer months.

· All Victorian preliminary finals must be played at the MCG.

· The current "banking" of finals played in the first two weeks of September will extend from a three-year to a five-year system.

. Collingwood, now an MCG tenant that helped broker early talks between the two parties this season, is expected to be guaranteed at least 14 of the 18 games it is scheduled to play in Victoria will be held at the MCG.

Why does Collingwood get the larger slice of pie?  Not fair for the other tenants.

My preference is for Saturday/Sunday games and all home games at the 'G' & maybe 2-3 Friday nights. Greedy I know but if the Pies can get what they want so should we.

All home games at the G on Saturday afternoons. :thumbsup

Collingwood what a joke 14 games at the G - We should get at least the same and when they are playing they should strictly enforce no standing in the Collingwood cheer squad. :lol

2006 AFL Draw Survey: the verdict
4:04:49 PM Tue 12 July, 2005
Paul Gough
Exclusive to afl.com.au

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=214778

Footy fans want to see major changes to the AFL fixture for next season, particularly an end to Collingwood and Essendon's dominance of prime-time matches.

This is a result of a recent survey of more than 1200 fans on afl.com.au in which supporters were asked on their views on a range of fixturing issues as the league begins preparing the 2006 draw.

And the message was clear that fans want a draw that is more equitable for all 16 clubs both in terms of who plays who each season and more importantly when.

On the key issue of Friday night matches many of the suggestions were consistent.

- all teams to have an equal amount of Friday night games.
- an even distribution of games, not just weighted towards Essendon and Collingwood.
- every Victorian-based team should play at least two Friday night games during the season.

This season Collingwood, St Kilda and Geelong all feature in six Friday night matches while Essendon has five but the Cats and the Saints only received an increase after reaching the preliminary finals last year while the Magpies still received the equal most number of prime-time games because of massive supporter base.

When it came to the issue of interstate games, the message was the same - fans believe Essendon and Collingwood are again getting a better deal than their rival clubs.

Amongst the consistent suggestions from fans on the issue of interstate games were:
- Collingwood to travel more
- increased travel by Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood to Perth.
- every team to travel at least once to each state and all teams should play in Perth at some stage.

This season Collingwood travels outside Victoria four times and Essendon five while the Kangaroos travel eight times while the Bulldogs and Hawthorn travel seven times although those clubs do all elect to play "home" games on interstate soil for financial reasons.

One of the reasons Collingwood tends to play fewer games oujtside Victoria is it is the most requested opponent for clubs to play their home games against every year.

And fans also don't want their team to have to play interstate two weeks in a row as the Kangaroos did in Adelaide earlier this season while Sydney and Brisbane's Melbourne based fans want to see their clubs play in Victoria more often.

When it came to the issue of which teams should play on the treasured Anzac Day and Queen's Birthday public holidays, some fans again wanted Collingwood's hold on these days to be broken.

The league usually only schedules Collingwood v Essendon on Anzac Day and Melbourne v Collingwood on Queen's Birthday but other suggestions included:

- allocating those days to matches between the top sides from the previous year.
- Queen's Birthday to be set aside for a re-match between the grand finalists of the previous year.
- And Richmond fans believe it's time for their club - which is four games clear on the ladder of Essendon and Collingwood this season - to be given a slice of the public holiday action with fans in particular nominating Richmond v Carlton and Richmond v St Kilda as matches that could be staged on those days.

However there was also support for the current fixtures to remain in place such has been their success.

Other key issues to come out of the fixture survey included:

- fans were split over the issue of Good Friday football.
- fans did not want Monday night games unless they fell before a public holiday but felt if the league did decide to sanction them then the Western Bulldogs should be involved.
- fans wanted more Saturday afternoon games at the expense of Sunday afternoons with Richmond, Hawthorn, Essendon and Fremantle supporters most in favour of that.

Some fans also suggested a 30 round season, which would ensure all teams play each twice, but that has been previously ruled out by the AFL - which will continue with 22 rounds.

However in that case the fans had a clear message for the AFL when devising a fixture in which each club only plays seven of its 15 rivals twice each season.

And that message was: "That producing a draw fair to all 16 clubs should be more important than producing a draw designed to attract the biggest crowds and to gain the most money."

Why am i surprised , no mention of Richmond v Essendon & Collingwood blockbusters after all we are the top Victorian side in the big 4, rewarding success was a reason put forward as to why we were left out in past seasons.

I quite like the 30 game season, there is no reason I can see this can't happen the EPL have 60 game seasons plus internationals and domestic cup competeitions. Maybe thgere would have to be a relaxation of the lists to allow more players and a largher salary cap.

Every team playing each other twice is the fairest option, we could remove the pre season comp to allow for this.

Less Sunday games and more Saturday afternoon games.

Less games at TD.

No games at Skilled Stadium, or whatever it's called this week.

Every team playing each other twice is the fairest option but I can't see us moving to 30 rounds per year. The season would be too long particularly for supporters of poorly performing  sides who are out of the running early. Imagine having to put up with Spud and the insipidness of the team last year for an extra 8 weeks and sit through 22 numbing losses straight :help.

Then there's the players. Aussie rule matches run for 120 minutes on a much larger playing surface with full-body contact. The players need a full week to recover especially at AFL level. So that rules out any midweek games which occur in the EPL, NBA and other major sports. Then there's the extra $$$ needed to pay them =finding more sponsors, more expensive memberships, higher gate prices, etc. Clubs like the Dogs, Roos and Dees would not survive.

The only way it seems you can make the 22 rounds fair is to copy what they do in the States and split the 16 teams in two conferences and you play the 7 other sides in your conference twice and the 8 in the other conference once alternating between home and way each year. Then have a top 4 for each conference and recombine them during the finals (say the preliminary finals - A1 vs B2, A2 vs B1).

Hmmm... being one of the 1200 supporters  ;D who took part in the survey I have to say I am pleased that the Friday night situation bought about the same sort of answers from most people. The current system is unfair - actually it's always been unfair. Every club should have share of the Friday night pie IMO. If the criteria for Friday nights is that the "successful" teams from the previous season get the most games - then how does the 13th placed team of 2004 (C'wood) get 6 Friday night games? While the 5th placed team of 2004 (Melbourne) only play 3?

Unfair unfair unfair. What makes it worse of course is the biased calling of one of the Friday night commentators but that's another story altogether :help ::) ;D

What I'd like to see for the Tigers is our MCG games spread over the season more evenly - that we are playing our final home MCG game in round 16 is pathetic. I have no problem with playing games at Telstra because we are going to even if we don't want too but I just don't like the idea of by round 16 all our MCG games are done.

Kile TS, I am ticked off we have to go to Skilled Stadium this year - who ever came up with that scenario is a nuff nuff. In the AFL official fixture (page72)it says the game is being played there because of "a lack of venue availability in Melbourne". what is that exactly? We shouldn't have to play there - especially when so many people are not going to be able to get in to the bloody ground because it only hold 28K and the home teams has over 30K members. Shoddy :banghead

30 rounds a season is the best option and not too long! imo.  the season should start 4-6 weeks earlier and finishui 2-4 weeks later, it means finals in october and not sept. i say scrap the wizard cup to allow 4 this and scrap all practice matches.  i dont beleive in this pracrice match bs, we have a preseason where new game plans are designed, old ones perfected, players getting fitter and stronger. round 1 should be the first competive match of the yr. there is no reason why it cant work , it just means a modified training and recovery schedule mid week to allow 4 a bigger season. lets face it, pre season is the time to improve skills and fitness, the season is the competive stage where all learned should be put into practice and fine tuned. this can work if the afl decided to and it would stop the dominance of the state teams because it means its a fair system where everyone plays 15 home games and 15 away games.  the season goes to fast as it is . poo its nearly over and it feels as if it just started! in europe they play soccer 2 times a week at times ,30 rounds a yr and scrap the fiz cup

Good to see you agree on the 30 game concept X thats 2 for and i against, should we have a poll even though the AFL won't change their stance. I too believe the footy season is too short.

With larger lists and TPP's no one player can play more than 25 games per season including finals this will allow players to have at least 5 rest periods during the year. It's about time the AFL raised the prizemoney for winning the comp as well with a larger distribution between clubs from their profits, at the moment the AFL are raking in the dough and nowhere enough is filtered back to the clubs.

With the Pies getting 14 MCG games why is it not possible that melbourne teams get to play their home games at their home grounds, we haven't played the saints at the 'G" for years and we know how well they play undercover at TD.

The AFL have split teams between TD 7 MCG as home tenants but half our home games are played at TD it stinks.

I am not in favour of a 30 week competition - far too long especially when you're having a crap season.

But the other problem with it is ground availablity. Where would these extra games be played?

The MCG, SCG and Gabba are not available for footy from Oct to March because of Cricket. Going by the way all the players are carrying on Telstra dome is supposedly barely copping at the moment with 22 rounds. :o

I just cannot see it working
