Inaccurate kicking costs VFL Tigers

RICHMOND:  0.8      1.11    6.16        8.17-65
WERRIBEE:   1.3      4.10    10.12    16.14-110

Goals: Maric 2, Edwards 2, Arnot, Banfield, Gleeson, Young

Best: Maric, Petterd, Miles, Arnot, O’Hanlon

------------------------------------------------------------

A goalless first quarter saw the Tigers go down by 51 points at the hands of Werribee in an all-tiger clash at Avalon Airport Oval this afternoon.

Despite solid performances from experienced pair Ivan Maric and Ricky Petterd, the Tigers wasted opportunities early and faded away late.

Maric, in his second game since returning from an ankle injury, started slowly but had an impact both in the ruck and up forward. He had 41 hit outs and moved well around the ground to finish with 19 disposals, 7 inside 50s and 2 goals – one of which came after a strong pack mark and the other on the run.

“I got better as the game went on,” Maric said. “I’m feeling really good, really confident, really fit so it’s just about producing four consistent quarters.”

Ricky Petterd delivered another impressive performance as a utility. He played a consistent game in both defence and attack and collected a team-high 26 disposals with 8 inside 50s.

The Tigers controlled the play early and dominated possession but, in a game dogged by wayward conversion, went into quarter time at 0.8.

Brett O’Hanlon started well and found a lot of the ball. He finished with 19 disposals, disposed of it well and constantly provided a link between defence and attack.

Werribee took control in the second term and built a lead. The Tigers first goal was set up by Arnot, who won the ball by diving on it, bumping an opponent, throwing off a tackler and putting it inside 50. Arnot had 17 disposals, 9 clearances and kicked a goal.

Anthony Miles, who finished with 19 disposals (12 contested) and 8 clearances, also lifted but the Tigers struggled to reduce to the margin.

Two goals from Aaron Edwards saw the Tigers fight back in a rollercoaster third term that involved frequent momentum swings. Nick Wynne (20 disposals), Brad Helbig (15) and Luke Conca (14) worked hard but turnovers and counter-attacks hurt the Tigers.

In what was a tough day for defenders, the Richmond struggled to contain the home side late and Werribee finished strongly to win comfortably.

Thought Arnot's game was really good. Maric was fantastic. Darrou impressed me as did O'Hanlon. Helbig and Petterd were pretty average. Both coughed up possession too easily. Banfield unfortunately fumbles too much. Hope Elton isn't out for long.

Given we kicked 7 goals 9 to their 15 goals 14 after qtr time I would say it was our last 3 qtrs that cost us that game.
Even 8 goals straight would have seen a loss.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

the game probably pans out differently though if we kick 5 or 6 of those goals. Kicking 8 points sucks the energy out of you. Kicking goals would suck the life out of the other team.

VIDEO: Tim Clarke's VFL wrap-up for round 8:

http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2014-05-27/vfl-wrap-up-round-8

“Ivvy was fantastic,” Clarke told Roar Vision. “If you watch the last quarter-and-a-half of footy, he really showed that he’s a level above VFL. I think he’s really ready for senior footy and he’s been great for us the last two weeks. I hope that he can give our senior team another lift after last weekend.”

“You can say because we failed to finish off the game that it [injuries] did affect us but Orren Stephenson is going to miss maybe a week with his hamstring and Todd, we’re going to wait and see what happens with his shoulder,” Clarke said.

Aaron Edwards, Ricky Petterd and the recently elevated Anthony Miles were praised for their standout performances on the weekend.

Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the AFL-listed players performed at VFL level on Saturday:

Brad Helbig
15 disposals
Was very good across half-back, but we would have liked to see him get more of the ball. Defensively he was terrific and he’s been stable for us down back for three or four weeks.

Ben Darrou
8 disposals
Was good early with his starting positions on one of their key forwards, but as the game wore on they started to get on top of him. He got beaten, which is unlike him, but he’ll keep working at it.

Ricky Petterd
28 disposals, 8 marks, 8 inside 50s
Was very good through the wings, midfield and back and went forward at one stage. He’s winning his ball, and delivering it well by foot. He’s playing good footy.

Anthony Miles
19 disposals (100% efficiency), 8 clearances
Was tagged very early and battled hard all day and did a lot of unselfish things for the team. Won a lot of the ball and delivered it well. He’s still in good form, just needs to learn how to break a tight tag.

Ivan Maric
19 disposals, 41 hit outs, 7 inside 50s, 2 goals
Ivan was fantastic. He was up against two really good ruckmen who, early on, probably had the better of him. As the game wore on he just got better and better. I think he’s really ready for senior footy.

Nathan Gordon
15 disposals, 6 tackles
Didn’t have a very good game and lost a few critical contests. We’re really desperate for his run to come into the VFL side at the moment, but he had another off day.

Matt Arnot
17 disposals, 9 clearances, 7 tackles, 1 goal
Had a fantastic third quarter, which is the standard of footy we expect from him. Apart from that he was quiet. He was working hard but needs to put together four of those solid quarters.

Brett O’Hanlon
19 disposals
Was very good early on the wing and really controlled that area. Went out of the game as it went on but we expect him to bounce back.

Kamdyn McIntosh
14 disposals
Kamdyn was OK, he was a little bit quiet early on the wing, then ended up going back. Played his negating role well and provided some run and carry off half-back.

Aaron Edwards
2 goals, 13 disposals
Aaron played well and we tried to use him as our main forward option. He was winning a lot of one-on-ones and he played a good game early. He missed a few shots but still hit scoreboard.

Todd Banfield
1 goal, 11 disposals, 7 tackles
Getting better with his work rate. He’s improving but needs to be cleaner with the ball and take his opportunities as a small forward.

Cadeyn Williams
6 disposals
Struggled a bit and was in-and-out of the game up forward. Lost some critical contests early and lost a bit of confidence. Fought back well in second half but need a bigger effort from him.

Todd Elton
Injured
Was very good defensively early in the game. We had to move him forward and into the ruck when Orren went off, but then Todd hurt his shoulder and didn’t play for a half.

Orren Stephenson
Injured
Was OK in the ruck early before he hurt his hamstring and went off. He provided a good option up forward too.

Miles -19 disposals at 100% efficiency and 8 clearances.
Not bad for a bloke that got tagged.
The 100% efficiency while someone is holding on to you contradicts what some people think they know about him.
FFS play this kid Dimma and get rid of one of the softies. They don't stand up against good opposition.
