Yes, play players who love the hard stuff would be a good starting point. Play Miles, Helbig, O'Hanlon as a leading forward and possibly Arnot for the rest of the year. We also need a look at Elton before he gets the chop without being given the chance to show what he can do at an extended period of time.

Around the state leagues: Dumped Tiger impresses
Travis King

DUMPED forward Ty Vickery impressed as Richmond overcame Essendon by 36 points at Punt Road on Saturday.

The maligned big man went goalless, but gathered 21 touches and improved his work-rate around the ground.

On his 24th birthday, Vickery worked deep into defence and across the wings to find the football and his ruckwork was valuable for the Tigers.

A deft tap down the throat of Sam Lloyd led to a brilliant snap for goal from deep in the pocket in the second quarter.

It was a solid response from the 200cm big man after he was dropped from the senior side this week.

"Ty was stiff to get dropped after kicking a couple last week," Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke told AFL.com.au.

"He came back here with an unbelievably good attitude, really helped the boys, really led the forward line like we expected him to do.

"(He had) 13 or 14 marks … he really contributed today and if we had used him more inside 50 he probably would have kicked three or four but it just didn't happen today."

Veteran ruckman Orren Stephenson received the Sir Doug Nicholls Medal in the VFL's inaugural indigenous-themed fixture with a superb display at the stoppages and three goals.

Medium-sized forward Aaron Edwards overcame illness to boot 4.6 for the Tigers, while Anthony Miles had 35 touches.

Ricky Petterd came on after half-time and had more than 20 touches. Richmond's win was soured by a foot injury that forced Kamdyn McIntosh from the ground in the second term.

Vickery was ordinary. Elton was better (though not by a great deal).

This entire side would've seriously given the Essendon seniors a better run for their money than our seniors. Even the VFL listed hacks.  Luke Conca looked better than his little brother for a start.

Stephenson is currently the best ruckman on our list. Including Maric.

Darrou is a gun. Shame he got hurt. If he & Arnot get delisted it'll be an absolute joke. Both should be first team regulars, ahead of the two Port rejects.

Miles in for Grigg.

Petterd is our only half-decent recycled hack and the only one I'd keep. As long is was purely for depth and as a mid/forward. Still butchers it though.

Jake Batchelor - what happened to this kid? Got nothing.

Edwards would be better decoy for Riewoldt - but his goal kicking has completely gone to poo from dead-eye dick to tile splasher. The Richmond effect strikes again.  Plus he's too old and not the future - give O' Hanlon a run instead, played alright today.

Helbig is awful - but with the season shot I'd play him too.

Gordon & Lloyd make me think of Marsh & Byrne- Jones and more recently, Langdon. Too be fair Lloyd knows where the big sticks ae  has his moments and is generally serviceable....sort of....

Banfumbles.....quick , tackles, runs, goes in hard .....handles it like a bar of soap in the shower and disposal is poo, misses easy shots....but  that hardly makes him any worse than half of the current first 22...at least he has those other assets we sorely lack....still relatively young and as I've said before...no worse than White was at the same stage and unlike White , has actually put together a good season early on in his career....despite what tigs says...not even close to the worse player we've ever had....hell, there's worse in our senior side right now. Plus he actually applies defensive pressure in the forward line.

We all see things we like and dislike but In my opinion Helbig is not awful. Like Rance, his kicking gets a smashing by some however, reality is he hits more targets than not, tackles, runs both ways, hits the body hard and plays with a purpose. He is one who should be played for the remainder of the year before a decision is made. Not sure why he has not been given a run considering his form this year and the second half of last season was very consistent. Like Darrou, is wasting away in the 2nds.

Richmond VFL coach Tim Clarke's summary of how the AFL-listed players performed at VFL level in Saturday’s win against Essendon:

Anthony Miles
35 disposals, 5 clearances
He had a terrific game. He's really been working on his outside run and it’s really coming into his game. Had 25 uncontested possession so it’s fantastic for him to start showing he can spread from a contest.

Brad Helbig
26 disposals, 8 rebound 50s, 11 marks
He was very good at half-back. Defensively he’s got some things he needs to work on but he’s contributing well offensively for us at the moment.

Matt Arnot
25 disposals, 7 inside 50s
Had a quiet first half but really came through in the second. Was a big part in us going on to win the game. We can always expect his hardness around the ball. His best game for the year.

Ty Vickery
21 disposals, 13 marks
He was terrific. Didn’t hit the scoreboard, but he put the ball inside 50 well. Was a very dominant big man on the ground, just wasn’t rewarded with goals on the day.

Brett O’Hanlon
20 disposals, 8 inside 50s, 5 tackles
Very good early and had more attacking involvements, which we’ve been asking him to do. A capable game from him.

Ricky Petterd
20 disposals, 5 clearances
Had the first half off and came on at half time. Had a huge impact in the game and was a driving force in our second half.

Orren Stephenson
3 goals, 20 disposals, 30 hit outs
Fantastic on the day. Rucked very well, gave us first use of the ball. Had a big impact up forward. Outstanding contributor.

Aaron Edwards
4 goals, 7 marks
Ended up kicking 4.6. Really presents all day and wins one-on-one contests. His attitude is fantastic.

Cadeyn Williams
1 goal, 16 disposals
Played his best game for the year. Spent some time in the midfield and had a tagging role. Went inside, got plenty of the ball going forward and had several shots on goal.

Jake Batchelor
11 disposals
More of a defensive game this week. Didn’t get as much of the ball as we would’ve hoped but his opponent didn’t have an impact on the game. Good game by him.

Ben Darrou
9 disposals
Very good in his full back position for two quarters but then was injured. Spent time on the bench and forward but he’s in really good form at the moment.

Kamdyn McIntosh
9 disposals
He was very good across the wing and half back in the first half. Found the ball and contributed to our offensive ball movement but was injured and didn’t play after half time.

Todd Elton
1 goal, 5 disposals
Started back and was very good on their key forwards. He was also injured at half time so we had to move him forward but he ended up having three shots on goal. Big contribution.

Todd Banfield
4 disposals
He was very quiet when he played up forward. Couldn’t really get into the game. Went down back on to one of their key forwards and played a role for us but we expect more from him.

Sam Lloyd
1 goal, 4 disposals
He was quiet early, like many of our half forwards. Kicked a goal late but was sore after a knock early and struggled to contribute at the level we want him to.

Still play him ahead of Shankwards, Thomas, Grigg & Houli.

Surprised by that....actually thought he was better than Vickery who apparently had 21 touches.....neither were particularly impressive though IMO....most of Clarke's assessments are to be taken with a grain of salt and some appear, to my mind at least, to subtly parrot agendas. Talk up the favourites and those they want to keep/promote, luke warm/backhanded/ambivilent (never fully criticise anyone at sensitive new age RFC )towards those whose cards are already marked or are out of favour.
