Gaspar another key loss for Tigers

Richmond defender Darren Gaspar is expected to miss up to three weeks because of the hamstring strain he received during the Tiger's dismal 69-point loss to St Kilda on Saturday.

The Tigers have fallen to eighth and will struggle to maintain their grasp on a finals berth without the key defender, who injured his hamstring in the final quarter. Richmond, already without fellow key defender Andrew Kellaway (broken jaw), plays away games against Port Adelaide, Carlton and Fremantle during the period Gaspar is expected to be sidelined.

Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong said the club would know the full extent of the damage when it received the results of scans today.

"The likelihood is that it is a slight hamstring strain, which will keep him out between two and three weeks," Armstrong said.

"Until we get the scans, we won't know exactly but given the way he pulled up (yesterday morning), we expect the scans to show a slight strain."

Wayne Campbell, who had some calf and Achilles tightness, is expected to be fit to play this week.

Darren Gaspar RICHMOND

HAMSTRING: Strained his left hamstring while chasing Fraser Gehrig late in Saturday's game at the MCG. The incident did not appear too serious at the time but Gaspar was quite sore yesterday and will undergo scans today to assess the severity of the injury.

DOC SAYS: At this stage he is expected to miss 2-3 matches.

Wayne Campbell RICHMOND

CALF: Developed right calf tightness during Saturday's loss to St Kilda and sat out the final quarter. This is the same side that Campbell had surgery for his ruptured achilles in 2003 and Richmond took a conservative approach on Saturday to avoid a more significant tear developing.

DOC SAYS: Campbell is prone to injury in this calf region and may still be in some doubt this week as a result of the tightness and his past history.

Losing our 2 best defenders in the space of 7 days  :( reminds me of 2000 when injuries to key players especially in the second half of year stuffed up our run to the finals. Hopefully our kind draw doesn't let history repeat itself.

Richmond is hopeful its star full-back Darren Gaspar will only be missing for a fortnight after scans on Monday revealed only a minor strain of his injured hamstring.

However the loss of the dual All-Australian defender is a massive blow to the Tigers, who are also without their second best defender for the next month in Andrew Kellaway as he recovers from a broken jaw sustained in round 15 against Essendon.

Gaspar has been one of the major players behind Richmond's resurgence this season but after Saturday's 69-point hammering from St Kilda, the Tigers are now hanging onto eighth place by just a game with last year's grand finalists Brisbane and Port Adelaide just outside the eight putting pressure on them.

And Richmond now has to travel to AAMI Stadium to face Port this week without both Gaspar and Kellaway, leaving them without an obvious opponent for Power skipper Warren Tredrea, who is likely to now be manned by Ray Hall.

Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong said Gaspar felt a twinge in his hamstring as he stretched to make a spoil late in Saturday's game against the Saints at the MCG.

"It's a grade one hamstring strain but he didn't tear it which is good," Armstrong told afl.com.au on Monday.

"It's a 2-3 week injury but we think it might be a bit back-related and if that is the case it might only be a two-week injury but we will have to wait and see."

Armstrong admitted the Tigers faced a major defensive challenge this week taking on the reigning premier without their two best defenders.

"We just seem to keep losing experienced players but it gives an opportunity for someone else," he said.

The good news for the Tigers is the three most likely candidates to replace Gaspar - Jay Schulz, Kelvin Moore and Daniel Jackson - were all in the best for Coburg in the VFL on the weekend while ruckman Greg Stafford will also be available this week after completing a two-match suspension.

And Armstrong said skipper Kane Johnson, who had been in doubt for the Saints' clash with a knee injury which caused him to miss the previous week's win over Essendon, had pulled up well following Saturday's clash and would again be available to lead the Tigers against Port.

I can't see Sarge, Moore or Jackson lining up on Tredrea. Last time we got on top in the midfield and were able to triple team Tredrea with Gas, Razor and Chubba whenever Port rarely went forward. This time around we'll have to rely on Razor, Morrison, Graham and one of those 3  :help. Maybe wishful thinking hoping Graham can do another Jonathan Brown job on Tredrea :-\.
