Ivan Maric feels sorry for Richmond supporters

With three decades of torment for Richmond supporters showing few signs of abating, Tigers’ ruckman Ivan Maric has expressed his sympathy for the club’s weary diehards.

Speaking after his side meekly surrendered a 35-point half time lead to North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday night, the recently returned former Crow was appreciative of all the ‘Tiger Army’ has endured.

“They’re fantastic supporters and they’ve been patient for a long time, and the game’s unfair at times to the fans,” Maric said on Monday morning.

Reflecting on his team’s capitulation and ultimate 28-point defeat, Maric pinpointed two fundamental areas in which Richmond had fallen away after the long change.

“North Melbourne got a bit of a run on, and we couldn’t stop it, so we’ve got to get better at that, and it’s really simple things… contested ball and defending really well.

“It’s hard to stop when a team’s got a run on like that, but it doesn’t mean you can’t. We’ve just got to look at why we couldn’t stop it and make sure it doesn’t happen again. It’s hard to accept the way we’re playing, because I feel like we’re so much better than that.”

The hirsute follower denied that a lack of on-field leadership was to blame for the fadeout, despite the largely anonymous second half showings of captain Trent Cotchin and Brett Deledio, as well as the monstering of key defender Troy Chaplin by previously out-of-form North forward Drew Petrie.

Maric also defended the side’s fitness; an area singled out as cause for concern by some pundits.

“I can honestly say I was running hard the whole game. Compared to last week where the effort wasn’t there, last night there was a huge improvement in effort.”

Opposing ruckman Todd Goldstein was arguably the most influential player on the ground on Sunday night as he drove the Kangaroos’ resurgence with artful tapwork. Maric was of the belief that his teammates needed to apply more pressure and prevent easy opposition exits from stoppages.

“I didn’t feel they were getting really clean ball out of the centre, it was more so what was happening afterwards.”

Despite the 3-8 Tigers now being seemingly out of top-eight contention, Maric vowed to remain optimistic, and indicated that his team was capable of beating 7-4 Fremantle next Saturday afternoon at the MCG; a venue at which the Richmond defeated the Dockers last season.

“We need to slowly build our confidence. I’ve been at a lower point than this. Because I’ve been there before, I know how to get out of it. The only way is to keep improving.”

Tigers not doing the little things: Maric

RICHMOND ruckman Ivan Maric admits it's been hard to come to terms with the club's disastrous season and says it's left the playing group feeling frustrated and confused.

The Tigers capitulated on Sunday night against North Melbourne, after holding a 35-point advantage at half-time, to eventually lose by 28 points.

The defeat has left Damien Hardwick's men languishing in 13th on the ladder with just three wins for the season - a long way from the 15 victories they experienced in 2013.

"It's hard to accept the way we're playing because I feel like we are so much better than what we're producing right now," Maric said on Monday morning.

"I know we're just not doing the little things we were last year. Last year is last year and I don't want to talk about that too much. For me it's all about the little things, that's the foundation of our game."

North Melbourne piled on eight goals in 19 minutes in the third term in a stunning turnaround, which has almost certainly ended the finals hopes of Richmond - now four wins out of the top eight.

Some commentators have suggested the Tigers' second-half fadeout was due to a lack of fitness, but Maric denied that was the case.

"We're fit enough, there's no issue about that," he said.

"I can honestly say I was running hard the whole game. I can't comment on everyone else, we haven't had the review.

"Look, compared to last week when the effort wasn't there, I felt like [on Sunday] night there was a huge improvement in effort and running hard.

"For me it's so simple, it’s the contested ball and we've got to win that."

Maric said the players had been on an emotional roller-coaster this season, as they attempted to secure back-to-back finals appearances.

Feelings of anger, disappointment, frustration and confusion have been felt by a playing group lacking in confidence, and the Tigers will need to turn that around quickly with Fremantle and the Sydney Swans to come in the next fortnight.

"[We feel] probably a combination of all of those things (anger, frustration, disappointment, confusion) and lack of confidence in ourselves and our ability,"

"We need to build that confidence. I feel like we are, otherwise we wouldn't have produced that first half last night so next week it's got to become two good halves."

There's a rift at the club and it runs deep and wide.

Until it's identified there is no immediate future.
Caracella and Balmey.

The whole stuffing club is sorry...

The club is sorry they can't keep selling snake oil to us. Results have proved this and the club is upset than it had to do an about face from what was being said earlier in the season.

They are sorry to themselves not us.
