Kane Johnson
« on: July 23, 2005, 10:31:36 PM »
I've been kind to Johnson this whole year, thought he'd earnt it over his good years in 2003 and 2004 for us, and I know he is still playing wiht injuries but FMD, his clangers killed us tonight.

Misses an easy handball, goal results.

Kicks it to the opposition under no pressure, goal results.

Misses a target badly, turn over and goal results.

On the other hand, our other senior players like Bowden and Richo were fantastic.

Come on Kane, get your schit together mate!

Methinks his not 100% yet.

Take out those couple of horrible skill errors he played quite a good game.

Yeah not a great night from Sugar. That kick out of defensive 50 straight to a Port player was unbelievable  :(. Those errors were all there except that handball was Newman's fault. It was the wrong decision to give it to Johnson as he was flatfooted and had a Port running him down. It was also too hard especially in wet conditions. Well actually it was Razor's fault in the first place because he couldn't pick up the slippery footy on the ground even though he was 20m in the clear  :banghead.

Might add Bowden and Richo also made crucial blues. Richo missed two very gettable goals. The one at the start of the last (from a excellent pass from Sugar  ;) ) would have put us up by 7 points and keep our momentum from the 3rd quarter up. A bad miss as Port ran up and kicked a goal to put them back in front. Then there was Bowden's out on the full in the last on his right foot.

Even our better players make dopey mistakes under little pressure :(.

mt,
i think ur wrong bringing joel and richo into this, everyplayer makes mistakes, they are all human, no one will ever  go through a game without an error but "SUGAR" IS NOT SWEET.  i have said all along since we got him that he is over rated and he only has a falso reputation on his resume. i dont give a fat rats arse how many premierships he has bla bla bla, teh facts are , teh crows were glad to get rid of him.  this man continually gets pumped up by the medai and tiger fans and he is nothing but a dud. im sick of hearing that week in week out he is consistant, pigs arse. just cos he gets many disposakl means jack shit1 for example , he was voted in the age as our best player, yet on afl.com he never got a mention. how dare the age say he was our best!!!! sugar coast us teh game with his poor disposal, poor choices, poor captaincy! i dont buy the excuse that he may be injured, if so he should not play, the last 2 games we won because he was not there!!!!  i cannot remeber the last time sugar  played a gr8 game, disposals mean nothing to me, eg, hyde didnt have leather poisening but he was fantastic.  cogs was awful early, just as bad as sugar and was dragged, after a kick in the pants he came on and was serviceable.
the tropuble with the media and many many tiger ppl, is that they cannot make a proper judgement bec of bias, sugar is nothing but crap, he is by far the least influebtail captain in the afl, and the most unskilled  captain in the afl and for someone who allegedly knows what it takes to get to the top just continue to f up!!!!!

With all due respect X that's crap about Sugar costing us the game. So it was all his fault alone that Port smashed us in the first quarter and got out to over a 7 goal lead ::). It was Sugar's fault that Simmonds dropped what should have been a fairly straigthforward mark for a tall 20m out directly in front from a good Johnson pass early in the game. And it was Sugar's fault Richo missed that crucial goal at the start of the last quarter after an excellent pass from Johnson that would have given us a 7 point lead and kept our momentum going from the 3rd quarter. Not to mention the 4 other simple goals we as a team stuffed up or missed and the fact that 8 Tigers had only 1 possession or less in the last quarter again.

I agree every player makes mistakes but some fans like to overlook mistakes by their favs yet magnify those of players that aren't. Johnson wasn't one of our best players last night and made some stupid errors but sheesh he's been very good for us since coming to Tigerland.

sugar coast us teh game with his poor disposal, poor choices, poor captaincy!

I was at the game X, I sat in the rain and I've watched the replay. And Johnson did not cost us the game. MT has highlighted a few things I mention a couple more.

Firstly, let me say that Suga made a mistake in the final quarter when he was clear running through the centre and kicked wide to a lead when he should have either a) had a shot himself or b) kicked it the front of the square. IMO opinion he needs to start kicking more goals but if we want to highlight things that cost us the game how about....

Chris Newman handballing to Johnson in the third when he was surrounded by 3 Port players - turnover and Power goal to Dew - costly costly crucial.

Rory Hilton dropping a mark in the final quarter in the goal square - it had stopped raining by then so it was costly & crucial - hell why didn;t he shepherd?

I could go on...

On the subject of his captaincy - and I have to say this doesn't show on the Tv but in the first quarter while we were getting smashed and I mean smashed in the clearance as the Power players ran in from the wings basicially uncontested (more on that later) Sugar moved himself to the wing to run the lines. Next ball up the Power didn't get the easy clearance - that's smart that's good captaincy.

I'll admit that it wasn't one of his best games and he made mistakes but there were few others who did likewise. At the end of the day costly skill errors and poor decisions in the final term cost us the game

well im still waiting to see sugar play one of his "best " games. what bugs the poo out of me over the past years , if that was wayne campbell , fans and media alike would have picked up on all his errors and poor judgement. but know, sugar gets looked after. beleive me, he is the worst captain in the afl, im not just talking in leadership here, but in skill, impact, capablities to turn a game etc.  did u see simpson yesterday, low profile bloke but a gr8 captain! hardly ever sets a foot wrong! and the only reason the crows won because they had the best captain with presence out there to make the win stand!

now imo , sugar is and only ever will be a half back flanker. whenever he played in the midde we got smashed, when he played behind the ball he did better, i think he has only ever hit richo lace out once this yr, not good enough for a bloke with his rep!

i know sugar has his heart in the right place , and wants to do the best for us tiges, i just dont belive he should be played in the middle. in his 2 prem sides he played as a half back flanker with run. these are just my opinions. as i said earlier every player makes mistakes, even the best players do , but i believe sugar just does not hit his targets often enough and he should be setting the bar as captain

Those who picked on Cambo were idiots. When you look back at those sides he's be apart of just reminds you how many duds wore Y&B. It's interesting since Knighter has retired supporters have warmed to Cambo. Cambo always seemed to be the black sheep amongst some prior to 2003.

As for Sugar being the worst captain in the AFL - come off it. So you prefer Vandenberg, King or Primus as captain!  :help.

I never said Johnson was an A-grader  (he's also carrying a knee) but that's not what necessarily makes a good captain. Mark Bickley was a dual premiership captain and he want just a very decent and consistent B-grader. There are many things to being a captain such as setting the standard at training, sharing your knowledge with the newbies and marshalling the troops on and off the field. It would be nice to have a captain who can grab the responsibility that comes with it as well as be a  matchwinner off his own boot but we truly haven't had one since Royce Hart. That's why the decision between the 4 candidates this year wasn't clear cut.

Our only A-grade player sadly is Browny and that is the main problem not the captaincy. We as a TEAM aren't good enough. We lack pace to win the footy once the ball spills wide of a contest or stoppage so we get smashed by hard running opposition midfields. We need more A-grade class players and last year's draft was the first  time in our Club's history and 18 bloody years of the draft's existence that we used it properly to get some excellent young talent.
