Hate to bring facts into it but career averages on grunt work show King had .05 more tackles per game 2.77 to 2.72, Byrnes more clearances by .06, contested possessions King 5.9 Byrnes 5.15, 1%ers King 1.83, Byrnes .89.

A bees idiot between them on most areas.

Interesting stats TBR and at least you have shifted your position from 'isn't fit to shine his boots' -> 'a bees idiot between them', a much more respectable assessment if you are wanting to compare the two. Double the amount of 1% is a telling stat. I still think most coaches would opt for Kingy for the extra toughness if all of their other stats are so similar.

The guys retired, surely we can cut him some slack and remember his achievements? Frankly it says something about the character of a poster who bags his clubs players when they retire (Jordan McMahon excepted)
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Well Said Hard Roar  :clapping

This thread is great up until about page 4 when idiots start crapin Kingy out.
He played for The Mighty Tigers you morons, that's all that matters and if you DH's who bag Richmond in any way think your for real, YOU'RE NOT.
This is my last post on this forum as I am sick and tired of idiots hoping Richmond lose or just expect that they will and wanting the opposition to win.
I bet every single one of you at least ONCE in Kingy's career went "KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINGY" as he kicks a goal or "PUSH UPS YOU LEGEND" as he decks a player.
We loved his anger and ferociousness and don't ever forget it.

Gonna miss ya Kingy, You awesome angry little terrier  :thumbsup :cheers :clapping

Great post 1980.Must admit I cant understand people who want their team to lose.Surely 20 years of high draft picks and 20 years of poor performances has shown that high draft picks don't ensure success.
As for Kingy he played like each game was his last....A great servant of the club

nice post but at the end of the day he was still a very ordinary player who survived at our club for way too long. far too many players exactly  like king one major reason why we have only made finals 3 times in 30 something yrs.  we make the same mistakes  over and over and massively overrate players.

me i refuse to gloss over a players shiteness just because he has retired. i refuse to change my opinion on a player just because hes retired.

oh by the way seeing as how you like name calling, see ya later DH I for one have had enough of head in the sand morons.

Personably always thought Byrnes was rubbish carried in a good side

When you talk about cultural issues at clubs, this is a great example of one at Richmond I reckon.

Putting more worth in a players character than their performance is a massive issue for this club.

He might be the greatest bloke in the world but in 50 years time when they look back at this era King will be seen as a nothing player.

Basically his only achievement is playing 100 games in ordinary teams.

If he is a B or a C grader then what the hell is Deledio? An A grader at the top of the level with Judd, Gary Ablett etc? Hardly.

I think you have to judge players based on positions.

if we're talking midfield then of course the way it would stand is

Ablett: Class of his own
At their prime Judd, Swan, Pendlebury: A+

I'd put Cotch, Lids, Martin as A- and the reason why they haven't been able to break into the top echelon is from being dumped with too much responsibility and duty. There's a common opinion that "leaders should always stand up" and I do agree with this but lets not forget even Gary Ablett in his maiden year at GCS couldn't single handedly drag his team over the line for the most part. Like When he kicked 4 goals, got 41 possessions in 2011 against Adelaide and the team still lost by ~10 goals. The difference being GCS had some raw talent that would do anything for Gary. RFC on the other hand have passengers whom are happy to take a pay check and just casually jog around the ground.

What I can say about King is that he is not one of the passengers whom will just waltz around the ground. He had enough respect for the fans to put in a solid effort every time he was out on the ground.

Dunno if swan was ever a plus

Judd was as good if not better than gas before op

Imo

i'm happy to respect your opinion on this. I think it's a preference for style of play and how we all see things differently. I personally never thought Judd even at his prime was better than Cousins at his prime.

I really liked Swan in 2010 I thought he should've won the brownlow in that year and Judd in 2011.

Wow

Rewatch the game eagles vs lions in qld

Judd was like 20/21

Vs

Voss black aka lappin etc

Kick 5 odd from middle 40 off touches

Would win ball on back andnturbo charge 10 metres clear

Leigh Mathews said he's close to besthhe's seen or something on that one game

No doubt gaz is top shelf too

But Judd pre op was not far off...

How have we over rated King?
We picked him up in the rookie draft so draft wise, he has cost us nothing.
King's contract from a $ point of view well he has hardly bothered the scorers.
He had to earn each and every one of his 107 games. By his own admission he was not the most talented.

Yet you have the hide to come on his retirement thread and say that he is over rated? Is it Jake's fault that he won his way into the side? Absolutely pathetic comments.

My point wasn't to denigrate King, I was just pointing out the tendency of the RFC to over inflate the value of players to its detriment.

Well set up a separate thread on that topic and leave this one to people who want to remember Jakes efforts and success as a tiger footballer.

VIDEO: Jake enjoying a beer with the cheer squad.

Push-up King feels the love

He has been the heart and soul at Punt Rd, so it was only fitting that retired small forward Jake King gave the Tiger Army one last memory to savour at the MCG. King sat among the Richmond cheer squad in the third quarter, much to the delight of the Tigers' faithful. A huge roar greeted King's arrival, and it was matched just before three-quarter time when the 107-gamer made a popular exit by skolling a beer.

Your entitled to your opinion claw but that doesn't make you right.  Kingy won his fair share of games for this football club and put his body on the line week in and week out.  Rarely was he beaten.  Criticizing him in his retirement thread is pretty disrespectful to what this player put in for the football club.

If we had 22 players who went in as hard as King did, we would be playing finals every year, irrespective of any perceived deficiencies you may think they have.  You can't replace the courage and the impact that has on your team when the game is there to be won.  Kingy will be remembered as a tiger great.

Jake King will not get a lap of the MCG on Grand Final day as he hasn’t played enough games

    Jon Ralph
    Herald Sun
    August 14, 2014 9:00PM

THE AFL is adamant Jake King won’t get a Grand Final farewell lap despite Richmond coach Damien Hardwick lauding him as a “special player” crucial to the fabric of Punt Road.

The AFL’s Grand Final lap of honour is open only to players in their official “200 club” or who have won a major medal like a Brownlow, Coleman or Norm Smith Medal.

Hardwick was asked this week about a send-off for King, who thrilled the Richmond cheer squad by knocking back a beer when he sat with them at a recent game.

He said retiree King deserved that kind of farewell despite just 107 games in his eight years at Richmond.

“It is an interesting one. Someone asked me the question the other day and it is something the AFL will work their way through. They have got protocols but some players are important to the fabric of our game. Whether or not they can make exceptions I am not too sure.

“He is very small anyway, it’s not as though he would be able to see over the back of the (Toyota) Hilux they would be driving anyway.”

The AFL made it clear they could not make exceptions given the precedent it would set.

“A club can do what they like for a player at any of their matches but (at the Grand Final) a player has to be a major medallist or part of the 200 club. The standard used for the last 15 or 20 years is the 200 club. Jake is about 90 games short,’’ AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said.

The 200 club members must have played, coached or umpires games or any of the three combined.

Hardwick lauded King as a player similar to Dean Wallis at Essendon — “He might have only played 100 games, but the influence he had was similiar to Jake. They are special players to their club.”

The Tigers will need to win without King and keep on winning to qualify for September, with their first task against Adelaide at Adelaide Oval.
