Richmond vs Carlton - Round 1, 2015
« on: July 31, 2014, 06:10:03 PM »
In recent conversations with the league's new boss, Gillon McLachlan, LoGiudice has also formally requested that the Blues play Richmond in the 2015 AFL season-opener at the MCG.

Carlton and Richmond were denied that premium fixture this year due to the unavailability of the ground, which was committed to hosting cricket at the time.

"We would like next year and beyond that – so every year – Carlton and Richmond to play the opening game of the season," LoGiudice said.

Asked why Carlton and Richmond should have a mortgage on the first game, or at the very least the first AFL game in Melbourne for the new season, LoGiudice said: "Prior to this year we've had more than 80,000 at the MCG for opening games. So it has been a successful game for both Carlton and Richmond, and for the AFL.

"I think if you start any year with a big crowd at the MCG it creates a buzz and it sets the tone for the rest of the season."

Richmond president Peggy O'Neal said on Wednesday that the Tigers would "strongly support" the request to play Carlton in a season-opener next year.

First big test for GM, if he has half a brain. It will be locked in for 25 years. RFC v Carlton R1 is like the champagne bottle over the bow of a ship or the 21 gun salute. It's a tradition that sets up the whole context of an afl season, without , it's been nothing short of a cluster stuff . I look on with interest  ::)

Carlton are going backwards at a rate of knots, I wouldn't be locking in anything long term with them, once Judd retires they will be lucky to draw two men and a dog.

Tigers by 80 odd

But seriously, should be us vs Collingwood. Guaranteed 80+ thousand every year and would get 90 in 2015. Carltank are irrelevant and don't ever bring as much crowd as we do for that game + they're gonna be poo for at least 5 years. Collingwood and RFC are going to be around the mark for the next 5. So it's a yes from me to play Collingwood every year in round 1. Screw Carlscum . The rivalry with Collingwood will be massive in the next 5 years imo. Come on AFL, come to the party and help it grow ya bastard

THE AFL has been promised next year’s Carlton-Richmond season opener won’t be affected despite MCG ground staff having as little as 72 hours to prepare after cricket’s World Cup final.

The MCG will host cricket’s World Cup on Sunday March 29 next year but has a rain contingency day for Monday March 30.

That means there are as little as three days to remove multiple drop-in pitches and remodel the MCG into a football arena.

But the AFL has been told by Melbourne Cricket club it can overcome concerns about the state of the centre square and soften what will be a rock-hard cricket outfield.

The grass will be closely mown for the cricket final but the AFL is satisfied the ground will be in excellent condition.

Let's hope McLaughlin gets the general admission cost and the cost of food and drink down by at least 20% first

Despite what Gil wants and says he has no control over food pricing at the footy

Reason? The venue is the one who has the contract with the food contractor. Those contracts have nothing to do with the AFL so in simple terms the AFL can't do anything. Unless of course they intend to pay some sort of coin to the venue to cover any potential loss of revenue from the contract if the venue requests a price drop.

Gil has actually said they will talk with all the parties but while the AFL doesn't control the venues they are limited in what they can do
