Trent Cotchin wants Tigers' finals pain to 'burn in the gut'

As Richmond turns its attention to list management, captain Trent Cotchin wants the pain of another brief finals series to ensure the Tigers have a "burning desire" for redemption next season.

Still coming to terms with a stinging 57-point loss to Port Adelaide in Sunday's elimination final, Cotchin took time out from the club's Mad Monday celebration to make clear it was crucial his team understood how precious finals campaigns were.

The Tigers have been crunched on the opening weekend of the finals in successive years, having fallen to a resurgent Carlton after half-time last year.

"That [loss to the Power] will live with us over summer and, hopefully, now we have been in the position twice, the boys are now really starting to understand that opportunities don't come around a lot," Cotchin said.

"We had to work really hard to get that opportunity this year but we need to make sure that that has that little bit of burning desire sitting in your gut throughout the pre-season, going into next season."

Cotchin, who became more vocal and demanding on individuals as a captain as the season unfolded, will seek greater accountability over summer. Ruckman Ivan Maric revealed in July the "training standards and standards around the footy club" the Tigers had set last year had slipped to the mid-point of the season, when the club's leadership group and coach Damien Hardwick dealt with the issue.

Having slumped to 3-10, the Tigers would enjoy a nine-game surge leading into the finals before they were flattened by a hostile Power at Adelaide Oval.

Cotchin said the year's events would help the Tigers in the long term.

"We didn't start the year exactly how we wanted to. We showed a lot of resolve to get back up and win some games," he said.

"We take some confidence going into finals. Obviously, we didn't perform yesterday but there are a lot of lessons we have learnt throughout this year that I think will hold us in good stead."

Moving on could also yet feature a prominent name from a rival club, with football operations boss Dan Richardson revealing mid-year the Tigers had room in their salary cap to poach key talent.

Cotchin said it was going to be a "tough" pre-season, with the Tigers to go "about driving those behaviours and standards that you can't afford to let slip at any stage".

He again defended his decision to kick against the breeze in the first term on Sunday after winning the toss.

"It probably just wasn't my decision. Jack (Riewoldt) and the forwards discuss it as well," he said.

"I don't think the wind was a big (factor), I think it was more just that they were willing to outwork and outhunt us in the early stages.

"We probably coughed the ball up, which let them get it out on the outside. They (Power) kicked 7.1 or 8.1 in the first quarter, which is very straight kicking. A lead like that in the first quarter of a final is always hard to grind back."

Would love to hear something like this:

"Yes it was achievement to make finals after the start we had. BUT, our start to the season was unacceptable and what we put out there on SUnday was beyond unacceptable. Our members & supporters deserved better and we are sorry. We have to live with it and the work to make sure it doesn't happen again and it starts now......"

Then not another word

And I don't think it helps the cause to make any comments dressed as a member of Kiss on Mad Monday, to have Mad Monday was a bad look a shocking IMHO

To be honest,  I don't care what Cotchin says. He can enjoy Mad Monday. All I care about now are actions.  Raising the bar at preseason to a much higher level. Starting next year as a dynamic force and not like cream puffs...
OER. Calling it as it is since 2004.

Déjà vu form last year and it will be spoken about for the rest of next year just like it was at the start of this year... :sleep

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Interesting
Straight off the plane at 10.35pm in Melb
Straight to Eve Night Club
Front up next day at Mad Monday at the Sporting Globe in Richmond
While the supporters are left to bleed
Interesting
Great experience at Adelaide but really gutted with the result and non competitive nature of the game
Watched the replay last night
Port were playing against " witches hats "
Terrible Terrible performance

Wasn't this the same article from this time last year?

Obviously last year's loss didn't burn too hard for the boys.

Personally the season ended after the siren. I'm not really interested in what the players say or do at Mad Monday or over the pre season. They can say as much as they want.

Where we need to improve is personal and hope the club is ruthless in off season. I'm more interested in the club coming out and saying we aren't top 4 quality, we need to be and we will be throwing up anyone for trade for the right price. We want a premiership and the current group is mid table. Not a heap of work is needed but we want a premiership and will do anything to get it.

Go hard at Pearce Hanley. Need an elite outside rebounding defender. Houli is crap.
Get Jamie Elliot. Pies need a forward, they can have Vickery.
Get Nick Malceski in Free Agency.

Players can say what ever they want. If the club puts them on notice then we will see action. Get real RFC.
Go Tigers!

theyre not good enough. they've fired their best shots the last 2 years and all they have is 7th and 8th positions. we have to all face facts we're not good enough.

That's obvious Ramps. I want to see what they do to fix this. Re-signing Newman isn't the greatest first step......

These blokes don't bleed yellow & black.

If last years finals debacle wasn't enough to wake you up to mediocrity than what is?

It's this sort of near enough attitude is what tops up with Hamspud & Thomas.  :banghead

I hope they realise that they are still miles off getting into top four.

It's this sort of B.S. that tries to play down the fact that kicking against the wind was the single most stupid decision in finals history.

Own up to your mistakes Cotchin and don't hide behind bullcrap rhetoric and disingenuous footy club spin.

How about showing us that your truly SORRY for letting us down yet again.

Rubbish!
The club that keeps giving.
