Live pick low for draft, but more players set to join AFL ranks
Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
November 2, 2014

DESPITE the strong depth in this year's NAB AFL Draft, there are set to be fewer than 70 live selections when clubs meet at the Gold Coast.

Teams are expected to take a total of about 65 live picks to the draft on November 27, with another 12 selections already confirmed as father-son or academy picks.

It means there will be upwards of 80 players joining senior lists, which is still a significant jump from last year's lowly total of 62 (which included the three father-son and academy prospects).

The total does also not include rookie elevations, which are confirmed on draft night.

A majority of clubs are expected to take three or more picks to the draft, with Adelaide, Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Richmond and St Kilda all likely to hold four live selections .

The Western Bulldogs hold the most live selections with five, while Greater Western Sydney will decide closer to the draft whether to use four or five picks.

A handful of other clubs, including Fremantle, Hawthorn and West Coast, are likely to determine whether to take three or four live picks.

The Sydney Swans, having already committed to three academy players (Isaac Heeney, Jack Hiscox and Abe Davis) will take one pick, while Essendon will use only its two first-round picks (No.17 and No.20) and upgrade rookie Patrick Ambrose with its third pick.

The number of picks may also depend on the plans of clubs during the delisted free agency period, which opens on Saturday, November 1.
