RFC needs to take control here, pay him a realistic figure and get it done for 5 years, stop the crap and get it done!!!!

What if they don't 5 years

Cotchin was offered 5 years last time and turned it down. Only wanted 2 because he wanted to "back himself in" to get a better deal next time round.

Dusty 5 years 2.5mil
Cotch 5 years 3mil.

Cotch isn't worth $700/year and as captain he should be prepared to take a little less IMO for the good of the club.

Thats the problem we have, think our leaders need to show the way and be prepared to take a little less for the greater good.

Agree, Lids did it, Jack did it, reckon the captain needs to do it too

Whatever happens Cotch will be the highest paid player at Richmond. Hawks are going hard for the end of next year. Wouldn't be surprised if Cotch ends up with $4.5-5.0 million over a 5 year period

He already is our highest paid player.

If he was to chose to leave then it would mean his "emotion charged" speech on Tuesday night was ...well a whole lot of do-dos

And I agree with Tony_m if we were to give him that we are not very smart.

If he knocks back 5 years if its offered to him then fair enough but he should be offered it, that's what I am saying, it would be negligent of the club to offer him less. For sustained success (if we ever get it) we need these players locked in and not have to worry about them every 2 years.

On that point, does anyone think he deserves more this time round? IMO it probably hasn't worked for him as I reckon his value has gone down a smidge

Why would you say that ? He just won his third JD Medal and was our leading vote getter in the Brownlow finishing in 8th spot overall.

Buddy leaving freed up Hawthorn's salary cap to target free agents. This is the pay-off. Add to this, Lake is considering leaving and Sewell will most likely retire, which will maintain room in the Hawks' salary cap. Top clubs have the advantage of being attractive to free agents. This was always going to be the case. Smart well run clubs continually manage their playing list and salary cap in sync so they don't crash and burn down the ladder for years on end (a la Brisbane under Voss and St Kilda under Lyon).

This is the problem I have with the AFL forcing clubs to pay a high 95%? minimum of their salary cap. It only makes it harder for bottom clubs to attract free agents while making it easier for them to have their own players poached by top clubs. Bottom clubs with either poor or young lists should be allowed to pay what their list is worth with plenty of room spare to grow into as well as target free agents with more $$$ than top clubs. Otherwise they end up paying duds they already have too much just to meet the minimum requirement and then they're salary cap gets pressured as soon as their young stars mature and hit their peak while having no more room left to go after a quality free agent.

Chuck touched on it in a smart arse way. I just reckon when he signed his previous contract their was a lot of hype around how good he was going to be because he was being damned damaging. Now I feel that he isn't quite as damaging and that 2012 year was a bit of a flash in the pan type year. Still an elite player who deserves the highest pay at Richmond :thumbsup

Yep.
In 2012 he came equal second in the Brownlow, won his second JD medal in a row, was named All Australian and was the Coaches Association Player of the Year.
Clearly was his best year to date.
