From next season when new contracts kick in for not only Rance but others he still won't be. In the life of Cotchin's new contract he will be our highest paid player just like he is in 2015

9. Rance re-signs: Other than Dustin Martin playing another blinder, the best news for the Tigers at the weekend was Rance committing for another four years at an estimated $700,000 a season. It makes you wonder the validity of the story that he was going to backpack around Europe. Clearly, he realised Europe’s going no-where and backpackers don’t get paid $700k. Then again, he might need to save because the price of a coffee on the Champs Élysées is insane.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says he is glad star defender Alex Rance "saw the light" and decided to remain in football.

Rance, 25, explained earlier in the week that he had thought about giving up the sport before deciding that he could still fulfil his duties as a Jehovah's Witness while playing for the Tigers. He therefore signed a four-year deal to stay at the club.

Hardwick said it would have been disappointing for the game to lose a player of Rance's calibre.

"We're just really excited that he saw the light from our point of view. He's an incredible player, he's in All-Australian form once again so it would have been really sad, not only for Richmond but for AFL in general if he had have walked away," Hardwick said at Melbourne Airport ahead of the trip to Sydney and a Friday night date with the Swans at the SCG.

Hardwick said he never thought that Rance would end up at another club, believing that it would be Richmond or retirement for the key backman.

The sixth-season coach thought that the similarities between Rance and other players were greater than was commonly perceived, suggesting that many players - especially stars - liked to get away from football.

"It's a pretty full-on environment the AFL system as we know. There's media, there's social media,there's a lot of meetings, they spend a lot of time at the footy club, players like to go away and spend some time with their family."

hmm if i was good enough to be on our list and thought myself good enough to play in a premiership then one of the priorities for me would be can the club deliver a premiership.
cmon players arent totally stupid and for many loyalty only goes so far.
imo we are in a make or break season,  as people know i lean towards break.
if i was alex rance or dustin martin and a premiership ws high on the agenda, then  id be putting on hold any contract until i was sure we are indeed capable of winning a flag in the near future,  or failing that  at least capable of consistently playing finals thus giving oneself a chance of a flag.

to date the rfc has not shown this. i can see rance going to freo in fact the rumours have been  quite consistent for ages now..  also who would be surprised if martin ended up at gws/ syd there window is fast approaching where as ours looks more and more like a middling window at best.

it may pan out both resign with us but who can blame em if a premiership is a priority or ant player for that matter.
