Brandon Ellis insists Richmond fuelled by consecutive finals defeats

BRANDON Ellis insists the pain of losing a second consecutive elimination final will fuel the Richmond group as it faces its toughest pre-season campaign to date.

With the Tigers’ physical performance manager, Peter Burge, predicting the players will work harder than they have before, most of the club’s playing list took part in a sizzling 3km time-trial around Princes Park early Saturday morning.

Ellis was narrowly nudged out by Nathan Gordon in the time-trial, which included more than a few experienced players who are not officially due back until November 24.

“I am burning from what happened in the elimination final,” Ellis said of the 57-point humiliation to Port Adelaide. “That’s two years in a row now, which is not good enough.

“We will have a big pre-season and then a big season that can hopefully rectify that come the finals next year.

“You play footy to win finals and to have that ultimate dream of winning a Grand Final.

“I have played in two finals (series) in a row now.

“The intensity and tempo (of finals) goes up to another level and you have to be switched on from the first bounce.

“We can’t wait for next season, but we know we have a big pre-season ahead of us first.”

Ellis said the desire of clubs to seek an edge on rivals and also the late start of the 2015 home-and-away season because of the cricket World Cup will mean for long, gruelling pre-season.

“Every pre-season is harder (than the last),” he said. “You have to try to get a jump on the other teams because everyone is trying to do the same.

“It might just be that little bit extra that you do that might get you ahead of the other clubs.”

Among the experienced Tigers on show on Saturday were captain Trent Cotchin and full-forward Jack Riewoldt, while coach Damien Hardwick also took part.

Riewoldt was particularly animated in trying to drive the players, urging them to stand their ground when exhausted at the end of the time-trial.

“Jack never shuts up,” Ellis said with a smile. “But he never lets anyone get ahead of themselves and pulls people back into line. He’s always up and about.”

Ellis enjoyed his most complete season to date this year, finishing second to Jack Dyer medallist Cotchin, but he still worked hard during his time away from the club to make sure he came back in good shape.

“I was pretty pleased (with the time-trial). I did a bit of work in the off-season,” he said. “I didn’t want to come back under shape.

“If you come back not having done the work, you are liable to do a hamstring or a soft-tissue injury. And you don’t want to do that and miss chunks of the pre-season because I think that is one of the most important parts of the year.”

it can fuel em up all they like but the simple fact is it wont matter how pumped up they get. they arent good enough and until the club recognises this we are doomed to more of the same.

DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

For him to be insisting, it suggests the interviewer, at some point said "Are you sure it fuels you because....."

Please, just one positive comment. Something like, "Its great to see the senior players coming back earlier than they need to." Or, "its great that Brandon has done a fair bit of work over the break."

It's about time someone at this club stood up and did rather than talk big in the pre-season.
I would rather hear nothing from the club because it's all just idol promises.

I would've thought that coming second in the time trial and the senior boys returning early was standing up doing as opposed to talking big.

when they are honest with us, when they stop all the b/s spin  i will look to find a  positive. ffs it would be better if they just said nothing and let their actions and footy do the the talking.

sheesh arent you sick to death of this sort of poo every yr. i dont need ellis or any of em to tell me how much they hurt, i need em just once to show with their actions just how much they hurt, i need em to be honest with themselves just once in the pre season. until then they should keep their b/s spin to themselves and  continue to  kid themselves and stop trying to hoodwink us supporters we have had enough of it.
let em redeem themselves first and then talk it up if they  are good enough. in the mean time just stfu im sick to death being made to look silly just for being a richmond supporter because of the utter nonsnse that spews out of their mouths every yr.

If you think that is standing up you are easily pleased.

Go Richo12 thinks turning up to training is standing up.
Not only that he thinks a second in a training drill is standing up. Someone was always going to win and someone was always going to come second. Nothing to get excited about I would think.
Hilarious.

Do you really think that a club that relies heavily on membership and corporate dollars for a profit can shut up and stop media "bs" as you put it?

all clubs are obliged to give a certain amount of media representations.

The amount of people that want to hear players tell the media how crap they are and put themselves down would be minimal, despite the impression you may get from reading OER
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
