A positive Tiger Article - a new director and sponsor

Phone boss answers Tiger call
04 June 2004   Herald Sun
Trevor Grant

RICHMOND'S depleted administrative ranks received a boost yesterday when a boss of the club's joint major sponsor joined the board.

Alan Nicklos, 45, managing director of Motorola's mobile phone business, is the second new director to be named following the hasty departure of directors Brendan Schwab, Peter Welsh and Michael Daddo on the eve of the season. The first was radio host Anthony Mithen.

Richmond president Clinton Casey said yesterday the recruitment of Nicklos was a major coup for the Tigers.

"We are looking for people well-connected in the business world, especially in growth areas, and people who can increase the revenue of this football club. Alan fits the bill very well," Casey said.

Nicklos's first job as director was to put the finishing touches on a new sponsorship deal he has organised through one of Motorola's business partners. The sponsorship deal, valued at $150,000-$180,000 a year to the club, is expected to be announced within a week.

His second job was to deny a report that cast doubts over his company's $900,000 sponsorship of the club next year.

Motorola, which is joint sponsor with the Transport Accident Commission, is reviewing the one-year deal.

Nicklos said Motorola would make an announcement in August after its budgets were confirmed.

"We are in our second year here and we are very happy with the way the relationship is going," he said. "It is our policy to sign one-year contracts, but we have a long-term strategy and football is a big part of it. We are in negotiations now. Things are looking very positive."

Casey also said he was unaware that the TAC, which puts $600,000 a year into the club's coffers and is in the final year of a three-year contract, was likely to end the relationship, as reported yesterday.

"I find that difficult to believe. I had a meeting with the chairman and the acting chief executive a week ago and there was no indication there was any problem with the sponsorship," Casey said.

The Richmond purist in me is cynical and wonders whether the new board member is there because he bleeds yellow and black or has contacts and a fat cheque book.
The financially concerned part of me is rapt and wants the TAC boss hunted down and put on the board as well.

I heard him (Nicklos) interviewed on SEN by KB this morning.
He sounded much more a business appointment,he said so himself, but claimed to follow the tigers.
The cynic in me suggests he is just another member of Caseys board who will allow Casey to continue to run the club as a dictator.
How can Casey claim that TAC & Motorola were sewed up during the week when its plainly untrue?
Nicklos himself said so in the interview,Motorola globally only commit to one year deals in any form of sponsorship.
Why is Casey blatantly lying to members?

Good question?  I don’t particularly like the way Casey has gone about a lot of things, but he’s there at the moment and has said he would step aside if a suitable replacement came along.

Haven’t seen anyone put their hand up as yet.

Guess that means we’re as much to blame for letting it continue.

I posted about this yesterday Boogie -  I don't what has happened but a week ago (it might me 2) things with the TAC were good - and it appeared that the deal was about done.

Globally - here in lies the problem - what Australia wants to do and what they can do don't appear to be the same thing.

I don't think he has blantantly lied - spoken to early definitely. My understanding is a week or so ago what he said was what was going to happen.

I don't Know what has happened but a week ago (it might me 2) things with the TAC were good - and it appeared that the deal was about done.

What happened was the Cameron Cloke saga he was doing 144kmh in a 100k zone. He wasn't just a little bit over and this absolutely staggered the TAC as you could imagine. They started thinking what the hell are we doing with footballers. They started looking at all of the problems that had been associated with footballers in recent times and in the past and are are seriously questioning there value in terms of supporting these groups.

Anyone know what the rules are in regard to being a Club Director?

I belive you need to be a member and if so how long before you are eligible to become a Director?

Tigers call up Motorola chief
4 June, 2004
Tony Greenberg
richmondfc.com.au

The managing director of Richmond’s co-major sponsor, Motorola, has joined the Tigers’ board.

Alan Nicklos, 45, fills the second of three vacancies created by the pre-season departures of Brendan Schwab, Peter Welsh and Michael Daddo. Media personality, Anthony Mithen, was the other board appointee, back in late March.

“We are looking for people well-connected in the business world, particularly in growth areas, who can help increase our revenue. Alan certainly fits the bill in this regard,” said Richmond’s president Clinton Casey.

Nicklos refuted claims that his new position on the Tiger board would pose a conflict of interest for him, given Motorola’s major sponsorship of the Club.

“I come across those issues (conflict of interest) every day. I mean, I look after three or four different operators and, although I’ve got to look after the best interests of Motorola, I’ve also got to respect the customers that I deal with,” he said on SEN’s ‘Hungry For Sport’ program this morning.

I’ve just got to make sure that it’s a win-win relationship and that both parties benefit out of it on-going . . .

“We’re very, very happy with our relationship with Richmond. We always look at analytical research on how the sponsorship’s going . . . the feedback we’ve had so far has been excellent.

Win, lose or draw – good, bad or whatever – whenever Richmond create media hype . . . we’ve been getting strong branding out of it.”
