Ellis back on track

19 January 2017

Richmond youngster Corey Ellis has returned to full pre-season training, as he looks to cement his spot in the Tigers’ midfield in 2017.

Ellis played a block of 11 games in the opening half of the 2016 season, but a groin injury ended his run and he finished the year in the VFL after six weeks sidelined.

“I had a little bit of a groin problem early pre-season but back to full training now,” Ellis said.

“We’re off to Maroochydore next week for camp, so looking forward a big week.”

It marks Ellis’s third pre-season campaign, after he was recruited to Richmond with pick No. 12 in the 2014 AFL National Draft.

“It’s still very challenging but I feel like I know my body better, which means I can prepare better and be able to play some better football hopefully,” he said.

The 20-year-old is focusing on the contested side of his game over the pre-season, with competition for a spot in the midfield intensified since the arrival of former Gold Coast Sun Dion Prestia and ex-Cat Josh Caddy.

Ellis said the pair’s arrival had added extra motivation.

“I don’t think it’s changed too much, it just means more competition for spots which is a very good thing,” he said.

“They’re both very good players and we know that, so blokes are going to have to step up if they want a spot in the team.”

Ellis also finds himself learning from new coaches this year, with Blake Caracella and Andrew McQualter responsible for the midfield group.

”They’ve both had a big impact,” he said.

“(Richmond development coach) Xavier Clarke is also working with me quite closely but all three combined are very knowledgeable and I can go to them for anything.”

I am hoping he has a really good year this year. Pleased that Blake Caracella is coaching him.

Hopefully has put a few KGs on and the body is ready for more games. One of the more promising kids on the list...

Disappointing, I expected more from him. He should also kick the footy if he has the chance but needs to find more of the ball.
The club that keeps giving.

I didnt, got a lot of work to do. Missed a large chunk of preseason so started behind the 8 ball. Has the class to look good at vfl halfbaked but lack of conditioning and speed exposes you horribly at the top level.

I'm a massive wrap for this kid, his kicking is elite

But he was extremely disappointing tonight

Looked lost.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Questions have to be asked again of our development at RFC.

I'm sick and tired of having players that are among the best VFL and then look absolutely light years away from AFL. This doesn't happen to every club. If it's not Lennon, its Ellis, if it's not Ellis it's McBean, if it's not McBean it's Elton.

Is it coincidence, is it mental, is it development, is it the way our AFL coaches use our fringe players? I hardly saw Ellis at all tonight. Did he spend an enormous amount of time on the bench? 2 games ago he had around 30 possessions and a handful of goals in the VFL. The jump is significant but this lack of impact by our fringe players is all too consistent.
Go Tigers!

Hard for a player going from being a promising midfield player, to playing a high, attacking HBF in the VFL to being shoved in the pocket at the highest level. Give this kid some midfield time and see him flourish
