Reece tweeted that it was great to be back at preseason training today. So he's keen and enjoying himself.

Good on him. As a young KPP we can't expect too much in his first year. It'll take a few years to find out if he ends up one of the bargains of the draft or why he fell all the way to pick 77.

Hopefully he defies the odds of a player overlooked 76 times in the draft and does turn out to be the steal of the century, though all the talk & excitement I've heard & read around the traps about him from some of our supporters reminds me of the carry on from Fremantle supporters when they rookied Casey Sibosado.

James Hird was pick 79

Knew someone would post that, however that one example of a midfielder from over 20 years ago doesn't really reduce the statistical odds that McKenzie will need to defy to be the KPF superstar some think he'll become all that much though. Westhoff & Walker would be two more relevant examples - though again not really as the former -whilst a good player who looks better in a good side and who unlike McKenzie had an obvious physical reason as to why he slid (light frame) - is hardly a superstar and the latter was a NSW scholarship pick that would've gone much earlier had he been available to every club.

You wouldn't bother having a pick beyond 30 on the basis of statistical probability.
But there continue to be examples of late draft picks and rookies who make it in the AFL.
So it can happen
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Doesn't come across as a kid with attitude problems as I have read in some places, seems pretty level headed and mature. Could be different away from the camera but signs are there

Already a beast. Just needs to lose some weight/puppy fat, put on some more muscle, and he'll be an animal.

2-3 years and he'll be right.

Get to know the lad
http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-01-22/mckenzies-major-milestone

* Juggling basketball and footy was pretty hectic as a kid.  With basketball, you can get into the trap of playing for a lot of teams and doing four to five training sessions a week and playing up to two games. Being such an avid sportsman, you just want to play basketball and football and try to juggle them. As a kid, it’s a bit easier because it’s not as hard on your body but as you get older it gets harder and harder. Eventually, it got to the stage where football was the sport I wanted to pursue.

* It’s [getting drafted] probably my best life achievement to date.  It was something that I’d worked hard for. Based on the interviews, I thought my chances were reasonable. I was at my friend’s house. He’s a keen Richmond supporter and so are a lot of my friends.  Once I had my name read out everyone went crazy and I was very emotional.  It was a great feeling.  Coming to a club like Richmond has been an honour.  I’ve been pretty awestruck by it.  I’ve loved every day here.

* I think running is the key one for me.  Being a big guy, in today’s football, getting up the ground is a key part of the game/ That’s been my number one goal to improve.  I try to do as many extras as I can to improve it. I’m just chipping away at it, every day, to get it better. I’ve worked with Jack Riewoldt quite a bit.  He’s very knowledgeable – he knows the game. He’s a smart player, a great coach and a great teacher.  The older boys have been very welcoming.  It’s hard at times with the age gap, but they really do make an effort to talk to you. Hats off to them.  They don’t have to it but they make an effort and I really respect that.
