It was a wet weather game and get the ball forward at all costs was the order of the day.

That said our fifty entries couldn’t been much better considering the speed we entered some players including Short just needed to lower the eyes and execute rather than kicking directly to a Blue defender.

This is a good point and probably true. Given he can kick 50-60m all day long it's probably his job to keep the ball moving forward when it's wet like that.

Since being switched into midfield earlier this season, Short is averaging 25.0 disposals, 7.2 contested possessions, 7.0 inside-50s, 3.5 clearances and 625.0 metres gained per game.

Damien Hardwick paid tribute to Short during his weekly pre-match press conference today.

“He’s been a real positive for us,” Hardwick said.

“I think the first time he played it (midfield role) was the West Coast game over there (Round 7). We had a couple of injuries that game . . .

“He’s just grown into the role.

“The great thing about ‘Shorty’, like Liam (Baker), they’re guys you can plug and play. You can put those guys anywhere. They’re just really good players . . .

“He’s quite under-rated, I think, outside our four walls. But this guy’s a premiership player, Best and Fairest winner, quite possibly could be an All-Australian.

“He’s a wonderful player that we’re very fortunate to have.”

Jayden Short on SEN (4.7.22)

After another good win in Round 16, Richmond star Jayden Short joined Garry and Bucks to talk about their win, his move into the midfield, Liam Baker's superb form this year, their return to premiership contention, and more.

Lol they can talk him up but he is as soft as they come  and a currnt part of of our problems imo.

Maybe im being unrealistic expecting an almost totally outside bloke to be good inside but if they give him the role then i suppose its not being unrealistic.

That's a proper brain fade that one and he knew it.

Not like when Stewart knocks out Prestia and they call it a brain fade.

Supposed to be one of the next generation first string mids we have.
Totally fed up with this panic merchant and lack of physical presence. How often do people have to laud him for banging it 50 metres down the line to nothing or he feels the pressure and just bangs it on his boot usually straight to the opposition.

Lol, I wonder why the experts in the industry rate him as elite player. He is not Cotchin but plays his role.
He made a mistake but the  whole team lost the game.

Short is absolutely not the reason we lost, despite his average game.

I boil it straight down to the blokes that missed goals in the last quarter when we should have put them away. Mostly castagna it doesn't get any stuffing easier than that one you got smothered you stuffwit.

If you listen to the industry then Castagna is a top notch small fwd cmon they find ways to rate just about every player.
THE INDUSTRY WET THEIR PANTS OVER HIS METRED GAINED STATS but never mention that so much of that is nothing kicks 50 metres down the line  to no one in particular or to a contest. You know this is  right so many complain about it. An awful lot see the panic and rushed jammed kicks on the boot so he can avoid contact. Your damn right he is no Cotchin no where near it and thats the point. The industry talks him up as the next wave the one who is taking over from the cotchins and it could not be further from the truth.

It’s A crazy world where some people can’t get out of the70’s and think you can’t play football unless your a thug. We need to realise like flares the world has moved on

The industry can’t all be wrong and those 1 % who think he is a spud are right
He is a very good outside player and will never be a battering ram

Short isn't playing Cotchin's role, they have very different games and game profiles. Short is 4 kicks to 1 handball, Cotch is much more inside and 3 kicks to 2 handballs (in rough terms). Short kicks long, Cotchin short etc etc. People expecting Short to be some hard man are kidding themselves, and not focussing on what strengths he brings. Nobody has the perfect game and this premiership team has been built around enhancing and encouraging players to back their strengths, not dwell and whinge about what they can't do.

We are definitely seeing a midfield in transition, more out of necessity than design, but it is in transition nonetheless. Baker, Short, Graham, Ross etc need time to be blended through while Cotchin, Edwards, Martin, Lambert and Prestia phase out, either thru injury or old age. And yes, we do need a Taranto or Green to bolster our mids as these guys either boom or bust. No argument here.

Totally lacks composure surely people are getting fed up with the numerous dump kicks in panic and the constant fear of a little bit of contact.

Has to be the most overrated player we have.
