Andrew McDougall/Players to target
« on: August 18, 2005, 09:09:11 PM »
Would this guy be worth targeting during the trade period?

His career seems to have stalled a bit this year at West Coast after being touted as one of the next big things

I am interested in peoples comments and also other players that maybe worth having a crack at.

Others that come to my mind include: Matthew Bode, Ryan Lonie, Ted Richards, Graham Polak, David Haynes, Andrew Mackie, Steve Johnson, Daniel Harris, Steven Salopek, Travis Gaspar, Beau Waters, Patrick Bowden, Sam Power.

Most of these players seem to have stagnated at their current club, some still playing regular games but maybe they are looking for a fresh start.

Worryingly Wallace has already come out a number of times and complained about our lack of "22-26 year olds". No doubt we will target a trade or 2.

I dont want McDougal, he's a struggler. I'd much rather Polak who I beleive want to to Victoria.

From that list i'd be happy with all of them bar Lonie, Richardson, Haynes, Gaspar, Bowden & Power.

Re: McDougall, Polak - They are both from WA originally, i question whether they would want to come all the way to VIC, we would have to overpay for them to come over, same with Hansen.

Salopek is a player i would enquire about, but being a former high pick Port will want some compensation for him.

Ted Richards interests me however his injury record and the fact that he already have enough ruckmen puts me off wanting him.

Not interested in the rest really, P.Bowden i would think about, but not for long!

Richards is more your medium to tall defender, although he has also played up forward with the bombers also. I think he is a very useful player and would be a very handy pick up.

I don't know much about McDougall so I don't really want to make a call on him.

But of the others...

Polak: I am not keen at all. Reports out of Perth have suggested that despite all his talent he is not committed enough to footy. Granted a change of scenery maybe all he needs (a rocket as they say) but I would still be very weary. I remember when we played Freo the other week - Polak played on Patto in stages. I said at the time I was impressed with Patto's willingness to make a contest even though he wasn't marking the ball - there were a couple of times when Polak should have cleared a path for his teammate  to get the easy clearance and he didn't - the second effoerts just didn't seem to be there. Also and I've said this before - I don't like his efforts in contested marking situations. That is he doesn't take enough of them.

Salopek: surprised he hasn't played more games for Port (even taking into acoidiot his injuries this season). I sometime think he doens't get played because he's too young ;D Choco likes to play the old fellas :rollin. I see a window of opportunity to trade for this bloke seeing Choco likes older types (eg a Tivendale & Hilton perhaps)

Haynes: what's his position really? Too small for a key position, not qucik enough to be a run and carry player - Don't think so

Mackie: built like a A4 piece of paper. Very quick though. Would depend on what Geelong wanted - I would think a pretty early pick or a 2nd round pick and one of our younger players

Sorry, i was thinking of GUY Richards, from collingwood, my mistake!  :banghead

Dunno much about Ted Richards, so i won't comment on him.

Re: Hansen in my previous post, he is from VIC originally, but we would still have to overpay to get him.

Re: McDougall, very tall (198cm), very RAW talented (at least he was when i saw him play last year), injury problems, inconsistent, former high draft pick who is originally from WA, would have to give up too much to get him.

McConnell is a player a few melbourne teams will target IMO, you know how people say Gilmour was the youngest pick in the 2003 draft, well this guy is only 8 days older then him!

Being a 2003 pick he is out of contract, 190cm tall midfielder, has struggled to break into a strong west coast and is out right now with glandular fever!
