'We can fix, should fix and will fix' our game: Hardwick

A FRUSTRATED Damien Hardwick has lamented Richmond's lack of forward pressure and inability to deliver the ball efficiently inside 50, as his side suffered a disappointing 19-point loss to the Western Bulldogs.

The Tigers were ahead on nearly every area of the stat sheet on Saturday at the MCG, but failed to capitalise.

Hardwick's side had more disposals (403-326), won more contested ball (144-126) and led the inside 50 entries 54 to 48 but butchered the ball going forward.

The Tigers could only manage three loose ball gets and five tackles in their attacking half, areas that needs quick improvement if they are to challenge for a spot in the top eight.

"The delivery inside 50 wasn't good enough and when there was a contest they were just harder at that part of the game," Hardwick said after the game.

"We've just got some areas of our game, which while were incredibly frustrating today, we can fix, should fix and will fix.

"But unfortunately it's cost us a win and that's something we need to take on board and get better at.

"We just couldn't get a contest [in the forward 50] which is really disappointing. We picked some competitors down there but between our forwards and our midfield we just couldn't get the ball contained inside our forward 50.

“In the modern game, you're not going to win many games of footy if that's the case, so we've only got ourselves to blame but full credit to a young side on the way up. They were terrific and they're going to well and truly challenge for the bottom half of the eight."

Hardwick admitted his side was "a little bit one-dimensional" going forward with the Tigers choosing to kick long to the goalsquare rather than look at other options.

Spearhead Jack Riewoldt was quiet in the first half, taking just one mark and gathering three disposals, and often had to battle against two or three Bulldogs defenders.

He finished the game with nine disposals, including five marks, and kicked two goals but missed several golden opportunities in the second half when the game was in the balance.

Fellow key forward Ben Griffiths pushed further up the ground and had seven marks and five inside 50s but like Riewoldt had little impact on the scoreboard.

The Tigers travel to Brisbane next weekend to face the Lions at the Gabba.

You cant polish a turd, as simple as that, the issue is that under pressure we have seen it time and time again that with the list we have our skill level and our overall endeavour seems to suffer. If Hardwick knows how to fix it then why hasn't he fixed it in his tenure as senior coach.

Frustrated?

Livid would appease me more.

I lament his last contract extension.

He picks blokes like Newman, Petterd and Lambert over blokes like Knights, Arnot and Thomas who all either looked very decent in the seconds or in Thomas' case would have been useful as a big body today.

Pathetic excuse for a coach. He's just a decent bloke with pair of balls. Not enough footy brains.

Richmond coach Damian Hardwick frustrated by his side’s loss to the Western Bulldogs at the MCG

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick was last night battling to bury his frustration after the Tigers surrendered to the Western Bulldogs in a game it statistically dominated.

The Tigers racked up 77 more disposals than the Dogs, won the contested and uncontested ball counts and had six more inside 50s, yet trailed at every change in a 19-point loss.

Hardwick was exasperated by his side’s sloppy ball use going forward and its drastic inability to lock the ball in the attacking arc.

“Yeah, don’t even look at the stats, don’t worry about it,” Hardwick started.

“Credit to the Bulldogs. I thought they played really well, their pressure around the contest was very good, their ability to score when they went inside 50m was very good.

“The fact of the matter is we made too many mistakes — that was one part of the game. The other part of the game is we went inside 50m 54 times, we win three loose ball gets and lay five tackles. You’re not going to win a game of footy doing that. It’s an area that we need to improve and we need to improve it quickly if we’re going to win footy games.”

In a press conference that sounded similar to several during the Tigers’ disastrous 3-11 start to last season, Hardwick said Richmond “only have ourselves to blame”.

Asked if it was a case of one step forward, two steps back, he said: “To a degree. Without taking anything away from the Bulldogs, we’ve just got some areas of our game that were incredibly frustrating today that we can fix, we should fix and we will fix.

“But unfortunately it’s cost us a win. That’s something we’ve got to take on-board and get better at because it’s not good enough at the moment.

“The fact is the delivery inside 50m wasn’t good enough and then when there was a contest they were harder. Loose ball gets inside 50m are golden. I think we had three, they had 16. You get smashed in that area it’s just coming straight out with no pressure on it. Just bang, straight down the other end.

“At the moment we’re well below expectation in that area. We know that, we’ll improve it, but we expected a better result than we got today.”

Hardwick praised his side’s defenders, lead by the brilliant Alex Rance, but said “unfortunately our offence hurt our defence”.

“They kicked five goals from the goalsquare, which indicates you’ve turned the ball over horribly, which we did,” he said.

He has no stuffing idea what happened today.

The bright side is he'll be getting the arse when we finish 15th and nobody will hire him as a senior coach again.
He's in the Frawley basket.
