Richmond CEO Brendon Gale backs coach Damien Hardwick, declaring he’s the right man for the job

Michael Warner
Herald-Sun
April 28, 2015

RICHMOND on Monday night declared coach Damien Hardwick “the right man for the job”.

Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale urged supporters not to panic and said calls for Hardwick to be sacked were “a very short-sighted view”.

“The coach is the right man for the job,” Gale told the Herald Sun. "The coach can coach. This is a shared responsibility.

“We're not a bad team at full strength but unfortunately, when you look at the profile of the list, when we experience injuries our talent is thin at the bottom end.

“We fall away reasonably quickly and so that's something we need to continue to work on.

“We invested fairly heavily in last year's draft for that reason, the first unencumbered draft in a while.”

Richmond has beaten Carlton and lowly Brisbane and dropped winnable games against Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs for a 2-2 start the season.

Harwick, 42, is contracted until the end of next season and Gale said his tenure was not an issue.

“From 0-9 in 2010, Damien has got improvement out of this team every year,” Gale said.

“A couple of disappointing performances, as much as they hurt, means we're not going to panic.

“Friday night was disappointing, we all feel that, the fans and staff and particularly the players and coaches. We could sit around feeling sorry for ourselves or we can immediately get back on the horse, dust ourselves off and get the right result this weekend.

“The competition is becoming very intense and while the result was disappointing, I think this year will be all about how teams bounce back. Richmond supporters are so hungry for success and they've got every right to be hungry, because they just haven't had it.

“But from where we've come from we've made real progress. We've got better every year.”

Asked if he could guarantee Hardwick would be at the club next year, Gale said: "He has a contract in place. He's the right man for the job and we would expect he will be the right man for 2016."

Richmond skipper Trent Cotchin on Monday insisted his team could bounce back against Geelong on Saturday.

“It’s just tidying up a few things we know we can do and in the past we’ve shown we’re capable of,” Cotchin said.

“It’s just a matter of doing it consistently. You never want to disappoint your coach, especially on behaviours we respect really highly in our club.

“The great thing about our group is that we’re pretty aware of whether we’re disappointing or not.

“We’ll challenge each other as a playing group to make sure our performance is more consistent.”

The Tigers will be without star midfielder Brett Deledio and forward Ben Griffiths (both calf) for Saturday's clash with the Cats.

“There’s no bigger challenge than facing Geelong who had a loss,” Cotchin said.

“They will be looking to play some good footy so we need to have a really positive week on the track.”

So because Big Benny has chipped in, everything is gonna be ok.....

What are we - 11 years old?

"We're not a bad team at full strength but unfortunately, when you look at the profile of the list, when we experience injuries our talent is thin at the bottom end."

“We fall away reasonably quickly and so that's something we need to continue to work on"

Wtf doe he mean, "we're not a bad team when....."
Are they the words of a confident CEO, one who is trying his best to sell poo as strawberry jam?
The fact they need to "continue to work on" just about every facet of their game , after five years with hardwick is to me an admission of failure....But with an authoritive spin on it.

Spare me mate.

I should stuffing well hope so, you have done it often enough.

Cotch is really starting to poo me with his namby pandy attitude to poor performance.

When Walker was announced as captain of Adelaide I heard Walsh talk about how his demeanor and attitude is one of " Follow Me"

Cotch seems to be more of "I'll meet you there, take your time if you want, though"

For the second time this year (out of four games) we lost a game while three injured players sat on the bench for the whole second half!  I put it up because I think it is relevant, but the club have never mentioned it in the media.  Injuries are just bad luck, there's nothing we could do or should've done about it.   :help   Every other time (twice out of four games) that we have had some interchange options for the second half we have won the match!
For the sheer fun of it I'd really like to have more than one interchange player available for the second half one of these days ... it just might help us a bit.   :pray

nah, its a valid point, if the opposition run over the top due to them having fresher legs.

It doesnt cause you to be second to ball, go to ground too easily, tackle like a fairy, handball to stationary teammates that facing away from your goals and in congestion, fumble because you are afraid of the tackle coming, miss targets, easy goals, kick straight to the opposition..... and whatever other stuff ups i have missed

Melbourne didn't have 22 fit players. Are they using it as an excuse for anything?

Not that we should let the facts get in the way of a story when excuses are there to be desperately sought for.

I dunno if people realise the extent of it yet,  but onfield we are in big trouble. Really big trouble.

Wake up

Yeah 15 wins, leading an EF by 32 in the 3rd only to lose by 20 is worse than being 3-10 then finishing 12-10 and getting annihilated in an EF from start to end.

Okay. :-\

Electrodes on your clackers Benny or Hardwick for the next 40 games. :help

I think Hardwick is the right man "given the right conditions". My opinion is, he is very poorly served by his assistant coaches and development coaches to the exclusion of Rutten and Chocco.

We lost Leppitsch and Campbell for 2014 they were big losses both of them and they to my knowledge were never replaced, not adequately that is for sure if they were.

After Hardwick the quality just dissipates.

who are the successful senior assistants who challenge Dimma?
We've gone too far from what made us good and it appears no one is helping Dimma but rather all passengers.

lol you stuffers, or any of us, wouldnt know a damn thing about the assistant coaches.

anyways, they are hardwicks choices so he lives a dies by them. if they are the problem, then ultimately he is the problem.
