Damien Hardwick’s job is safe at Richmond, says chief executive Brendon GaleHerald-Sun
May 02, 2015 1:16PMRICHMOND chief executive Brendon Gale says Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has his and the club board’s full support.
Hardwick came under fire last week after Richmond’s shock loss to Melbourne at the MCG.
But Gale could not be clearer today about Hardwick’s future.
“I want to be absolute sure and clear for the avoidance of doubt (that) any discussion about Damien Hardwick’s tenure at Richmond is bull----,” Gale told SEN 1116.
“It’s part of footy when you put in a performance like that — no matter how you’re travelling — people look to explain the loss ... it’s convenient to just go to the coach.
“I am the CEO of this club, I run this club on behalf of the board and I am accountable to that board and that’s (Hardwick’s future) simply not on the agenda.”
Gale paid tribute to Hardwick’s list build, but conceded the club struggles to cover injuries.
“When we’re at our best and our strongest we’re not a bad football team,” Gale said.
“There’s credit in that because it wasn’t so long ago we were a very poor football team.
“Strong arm to the coach for transforming this list over a few years in challenging times but I think at our best we’re not bad and we’ve got to get better as all clubs do.
“All teams have injuries but I think we struggle more than most because of our lack of depth.”
Gale said he was confident the club would broker a deal with out-of-contract All Australian defender Alex Rance.
“I’m confident he’ll be at Richmond but I take nothing for granted,” he said.
