They had a strong team in and had a massive advantage playing 2 rucks who can play around the ground as apples to our Hampton. Conca going off early hurt us big time around the stoppages. Thomas copped a heavy tag and our ball movement was poor all night.

Big Mac played but not the last. Dea played another solid game and is our general with instruction and set ups. The boys put in but our ball movement was poor so our forward didn't recieve any good ball coming in. As I said earlier, conca going off was a turning point as they tagged Thomas which meant they started winning clearances all over the ground. George and Elton went ok down back and I thought Lennon put in all night. Short was lively and showed courage playing the game out after a big knock to his head. The tall forwards presented well but our ball movement didn't help Big Mac, bean and astbury. Worst performance for the year.

Thanks for the report, Machine. Let's hope Conca's injury doesn't keep him out for too long for a change :pray.

Better out than in.
Also this gives Newman a better chance of getting games

Thomas and cachia best, yes at giving it straight back to the opposition. They undo any good work with shocking decisions and skills. I will say Thomas is as hard as they come, get out of the way would be my advice. Hampson was completely taken to the cleaners by gawn, top 5 worst not best. Whoever done the report was abviously drinking :wallywink

Inefficient VFL Tigers beaten by Casey

Richmond’s VFL team has suffered a disappointing 44-point loss in its Round 6 clash with Casey on Saturday night.

Despite the match being a relatively even contest throughout, the Tigers struggled to ever control the game, after allowing Casey an early lead.

The Scorpions never relinquished their initial advantage, and managed to break away in the final quarter, piling on seven goals to the Tigers’ two.

VFL coach Tim Clarke said the Tigers’ errant ball use was what cost the team the win.

“The contested game, the boys were pretty good at tonight. They ripped in hard, they tackled hard, and the effort was there. It was just, in our offensive game, we could not control the football,” he said.

“We could never put scoreboard pressure on Casey and that’s where they were very good. They were able to chip the ball around, take the sting out of it a little bit and get us chasing them.

“They made the most of their opportunities when they came and we couldn’t do that.”

Clarke was also quick to praise the pressure game Casey brought to the contest.

“The first quarter set the scene. Casey was able to control the football and we couldn’t get any offensive ball movement up and going. They really strangled us well.

“They strangled us well at stoppages and then they were able to continue to put scoreboard pressure on us. We couldn’t get any momentum with the football and that really hurt us tonight.”

In what was a largely scrappy contest, Jaryd Cachia provided an element of stability for the Tigers.

He had a game-high 33 possessions (17 contested), eight hard ball gets and eight clearances, which facilitated several scoring opportunities.

Jason Castagna (25 disposals) put in another solid performance, delivering much-needed run off the halfback line, while Matt Dea (21 disposals) showed great endeavour across the backline, foiling many of Casey’s forays forward.

Small forwards Nathan Gordon, Jake Aarts and Jayden Short were lively at times, all kicking two goals each.

The loss was compounded by a hamstring injury to Reece Conca late in the second quarter. He will undergo scans this week to determine the extent of the damage.

The result saw Richmond slip outside the top eight after six rounds.

The Tigers will hope to realign their season when they meet Essendon in their Dreamtime at the ‘G curtain raiser next Saturday, at the ME Centre.

FINAL SCORES
Richmond            2.3          4.6          6.7          8.11.59
Casey                    4.4          7.6          8.9          15.13.103

GOALS
Richmond: Gordon 2, Short 2, Aarts 2, Lennon, McBean
Casey: Gawn 3, Fritsch 3, Moncrieff 2, Smith 2, White, Rutherford, Petropoulos, Morris, Muir

BEST
Richmond: Cachia, Castagna, Dea, Thomas, Lennon, McDonough, Gordon
Casey: Gawn, Michie, Terlich, Neal-Bullen, White, Hutchins

I like Short as a player. He could be a very good half forward flanker. He great zip and kicks it pretty well. Hows he going in the twos?

Tim Clarke's summary:

Jason Castagna
25 disposals, 13 contested possessions, five marks

Had another very good game at half-back. Provided us with plenty of productive run and carry. Is maintaining a bold playing style, which is exciting for the Club going forward.

VIDEO of Castagna's game: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-05-26/vfl-round-6-castagna-highlights

Matt Dea
21 disposals, 10 contested possessions

Was again really solid in the back six.  His experience, and help in setting up our defensive unit, has been particularly valuable over the past four weeks with our younger playing group.  Continues to win the football and continues to push hard for senior selection.

Ben Lennon
19 disposals, one goal

Was fairly solid throughout, but it was a night that could have been a lot better for him, if he’d held four or five marks he got his hands to.  Needs to continue with his intensity around the ball.  That’s his biggest focus at the moment, to give himself every chance of regaining a place in the senior side over the next few weeks.

Matt McDonough
18 disposals, five tackles

Couldn’t back up his stellar performance from the previous round.  Was okay on the night, with a lot of work inside, including three or four clearances and five tackles.  Overall, however, we expect more from him.

Matt Thomas
17 disposals, 10 tackles, six clearances

His intensity and attitude was first class.  He really set the scene for us early, along with Jarryd Cachia, on how to win the football.  Unfortunately, though, he couldn’t get enough of the ball to generate offensive change for us, finishing with only 17 touches. Is usually more of a ball magnet than that, and we expect a better all-round performance from him.

Nathan Gordon
14 disposals, two goals

A competent performance.  Kicked two goals, but probably should have finished with four or five.  Needs to fix a couple of areas of his game, in order to play consistent football at both VFL and AFL levels.  We’re going to be working hard with him over the next few weeks.

Shaun Hampson
12 disposals, 47 hit-outs

Again was very good with his ruckwork, but thought he was beaten overall by his opponent Max Gawn around the ground.  Just expect him to give us more of a contest down the line. We need him to slip forward to have some shots for goal, as he has done in previous weeks. Good ruckwork, just needs to impact more around the ground.

Liam McBean
11 disposals, one goal

After returning from his senior league debut the previous week, we expected him to play above the VFL level.  Unfortunately, though, he got a knock early, which restricted his ability to mark the ball. We want our key forwards to mark the ball, and he ended up with only one grab. Had three shots for goal, but we needed a forward who could mark, stand up, and hold the ball inside our forward 50. Unfortunately, he couldn’t do that.

Jayden Short
10 disposals, two goals

Was fairly good in his half-forward role.  Had four or five shots for goal, successfully converting two of them. We expect him to tackle and apply more pressure inside 50, however.  That’s something we have been working on with him. To hit the scoreboard four times, and to provide energy inside our forward 50 area, is what we expect.

Todd Elton
Eight disposals, five contested possessions

Played on one of the opposition’s key forwards.  Probably didn’t have as many contests as he usually does, where he really asserts himself on the game, but still managed to impact where we needed him to.  Still working on his composure in the defensive 50, which we need him to get right if he’s to have an influence at AFL level.

David Astbury
Seven disposals

Is still learning the forward role at the moment.  Got to some contests, but we expect him to get to more, if he’s going to have a major impact. We’ll be looking to train this during the week and, hopefully, see an improvement from him in this area on the weekend.

Reece Conca
Six disposals, five tackles, three clearances

Injured his hamstring in the second quarter. Started the game really well, with his tackle pressure clearly of AFL standard. But, unfortunately, will now miss up to to six weeks.

Reece McKenzie
Four disposals, three marks

Played only half a game.  Showed good signs during his limited one-field time, with three strong marks and one shot for goal. Hopefully, we can get some strong training into him this week, so he can play a full game.

Wonder if playing Astbury as a forward again is an indication that we're confident of keeping Rance? Or do we just want him to be a genuine swingman? Or are they just trying to replicate the three talls set up of the AFL side and Hamspud can't cut it? Alternatively what might it say about our plans for some of our other key forwards...arguments about quality aside, we have quite a few now....

Interesting that Gawn isn't getting a game at Melbourne - worth a crack? We still need another half decent ruckman IMO, atm it's it's still just a wearing Maric and SFA....if we trade one of Vickery & Griffiths like I hope we do (or even McBean like I fear we might while ever the current idiots are still in charge), as ordinary as they are in the ruck- it'll be even less....

Good call on Maxy Gawn, can take a grab down the forward line as well
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Time for Castagna to get a run, has consistently played at a high standard this season, deserves a crack
