Growing up in Brisbane in the 80s and (mostly) 90s and going to all the Bears games, me and my friend used to look at the draw at the start of each year to see what big names (mostly the forwards) we would get to see. Getting to see Plugger play was one of the ones we penciled in early in the season. I admired so much watching him run through defenders just leading for a mark.

Lockett wanted to become a Tiger when he announced he was leaving St Kilda but the Saints wanted too much in terms of a trade IIRC. The AFL then stepped in and the Swans got him on the cheap.

LOL

Liar and a crook.

Complete cheat and would sell a family member for a dollar.

Taken from the following article -

http://m.heraldsun.com.au/news/four-legs-good-two-legs-bad/story-fni0fiyv-1227233841181

McDonald and his then business-partner Lockett were charged with allegedly defrauding greyhound breeders by “ringing in” an inferior breeding dog called Black Pirate in place of their champion Malawi’s Prince.

Ignorance brought the scheme undone. As the studbook keeper knows, two blue parents cannot produce black pups, so when black pups turned up in some litters supposedly sired by the blue Malawi’s Prince, unhappy owners hollered for the marshal.

In one of the funniest scenes of modern sport, a bemused policeman found Lockett, terror of the goal square, hiding in a bedroom wardrobe in a house on the Devon Meadows property that is Darren McDonald’s training base.

McDonald and Lockett were charged with deception and other offences in 1996 but, by great good fortune, the charges were eventually dropped, much to the disgust of investigators — and of breeders, who then mounted a class action.

I remember this well as i was involved in greyhound racing at the time. I'm pretty sure this played a part in Lockett going to sydney. It took him out of the frame and left Mcdonald to carry the can in Victoria.

Considering what St kilda wanted from us and what they accepted from Sydney, I have no doubt the AFL played a big part behind the scenes, though.

I think Lockett's dad and John Northey dad were mates from Ballarat and since Swooper was our coach it made the fit more likely, or so I was told at the time post 1994 footy season.

For a week or so there was real hype he was going to be a Tiger and I can remember thinking what a forward line with Richo and Plugger in it.

I was part of a group of Tiger diehards who used to regularly haunt training in the mid to late 90s. One day we were sitting there when Jim Malone walked past on his way to the office, and we asked him what went wrong with the Plugger to Richmond deal. He confirmed that Plugger virtually had his pen poised over the contract due to his old mans' connection with Swooper Northey, until the AFL stepped in and secured his move to Sydney.
