Dimma's post-match presser ...

VIDEO: http://www.richmondfc.com.au/video/2015-06-19/round-12-hardwick-postmatch

* We were a half-step off tonight. Defensively, we missed opportunities to force turnovers; attacking-wise, we turned over the ball.

* We struggled to get through the Eagles defensive set-up behind the ball.

* Skills weren't to the level we'd expect. We fought our way back in the game but never looked like breaking away. All credit to the Eagles.

* Missed 3 chances in the last (Jack's was tough). When you're trying to get back and build momentum you need to take your opportunities.

* 8-9 marks to them inside our forward 50 which we failed to bring to ground.

* When you're behind on the scoreboard, the onus is on the side behind to change things up [I think Dimma was asked about Chaplin going forward in the last].

* Corey Ellis has a groin injury. Not sure of the severity.

* Umps doing a satisfactory job. Better umps paying head highs than not, so to discourage that sort of thing at lower levels.

* Loss was just a blip.

* Disappointing to drop a game we should have won at home. Got the big challenge next week up at the S.C.G. against Sydney.

Damien Hardwick denies Richmond has taken a step back after losing to West Coast

Sam Edmund
Herald-Sun
June 20, 2015

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick is confident his side hasn’t taken a step back, despite the Tigers’ four-match winning streak coming to an emphatic end at the hands of West Coast.

Returning after the bye, Richmond never really got going and looked jaded for much of a contest they eventually lost by 20 points to slip to 6-5.

But Hardwick, who must take his side to the SCG to face Sydney next week, remained optimistic after the final siren.

“It’s just a blip, we’re very confident with where we’re going,” Hardwick said.

“We know we’ve got a lot of improvement in us ... we had some guys who played some good footy, we had a lot of players down so we’re looking forward to the challenge next Friday night against Sydney.

“For us it was a winnable game at home that we dropped. It’s really disappointing ... and we’ve got a real challenge on our hands next week to go up to Sydney to knock them off on their own track, but we’ve done it before and we’re capable of doing it again.”

The Eagles were led by a rampant Nic Naitanui, who monstered Ivan Maric in an unstoppable display of ruck power. With Naitanui climbing all over his hapless counterpart, West Coast won the first nine clearances of the match and their midfielders got an armchair ride for four quarters.

“He’s impressive, to go forward and kick a couple of goals as well, he’s just explosive,” Hardwick said of Naitanui.

“A couple of those centre bounce clearances were as good as you’ll see.”

Hardwick admitted the Richmond coaches box wrestled all night with whether to deploy a third man up at stoppages to try and negate Naitanui’s dominance.

“Unfortunately, to do one thing you’ve got to give up something else. We did initially in quarter 1 and brought up the extra forward, but who’s marking it down the other end?” he said.

“It’s one of those one’s you constantly battle with. Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the scoreboard so you’ve got to change your tactic to come up with something else.”

Hardwick said his side was “a half step off” but tipped his hat to West Coast’s defensive discipline.

“To give up 23 marks to the opposition from our boot is credit to West Coast - they’re doing some unbelievable stuff behind the ball. Their zoning is as good as we’ve seen this year and we struggled to get through it at times,” he said.

“We took a number of marks inside 50m, but their ability to mark the ball (in our forward 50m) was the big difference on the night, I thought.”

Tigers had no answer for Naitanui: Hardwick

Travis King

DAMIEN Hardwick says Richmond had no answer for Nic Naitanui at the MCG on Friday night, with the Tigers coach conceding the West Coast ruckman is nearly unstoppable at his brilliant best.

Naitanui set the tone from the opening bounce in the Eagles' 20-point win, before dominating Ivan Maric and part-timers Ben Griffiths and Ty Vickery around the ground.

The 201cm Eagle won 33 hit-outs – including 16 from the centre to the Tigers trio's seven – and booted two goals from 12 disposals while also laying five tackles.

"Yeah, it's hard (to stop him). He had a good game tonight, I thought. He's impressive," Hardwick said post-match.

"To go forward and kick a couple of goals as well, he's just explosive. A couple of centre bounce clearances were as good as you'll see, so it was really impressive."

Fed by Naitanui and back-up big man Callum Sinclair (12 hit-outs), the Eagles' midfield got on top as the Tigers struggled to kick into the same gear which propelled them to four-straight wins before the bye.

Richmond (6-5) had beaten Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Essendon and previously undefeated Fremantle prior to the week off, surging from 13th on the ladder to seventh before the loss to West Coast.

However, Hardwick refused to blame the bye for stalling Richmond's momentum, instead saying the Tigers couldn't pressure the Eagles enough and that they coughed up possession too easily to West Coast's zone defence.

"To give up 23 marks to the opposition from our boot is credit to West Coast," Hardwick said.

"They're doing some unbelievable stuff behind the ball. Their zoning behind the ball is as good as we've seen this year and we struggled to get through at times."

Despite the Eagles having more possession (+19), clearances (+5) and inside 50s (+2), the Tigers went in ahead at half-time by three points thanks to a late flurry.

But Hardwick said his side never really gained the ascendancy and he credited star midfielder Dustin Martin (31 disposals, three goals) for keeping Richmond in the contest at the main break.

"We looked off at the start. A lack of intensity I thought and our skills weren't to the level that we know they could be, so we eventually fought our way back into the contest but we probably never looked as if we were going to run away with it," Hardwick said.

"I thought (Martin) was the reason we were in the game at half-time, he was outstanding. He probably quietened a little bit in the second half but we were probably jumping on his back in the first half.

"He made some things happen, he was trying to get our game up and going but unfortunately we didn't have enough guys ready to go with him tonight."

The loss was soured by a groin injury to first-year player Corey Ellis, who will have scans this week to determine the extent of the issue.

Richmond has now slipped one rung on the ladder to eighth spot, with a tough challenge against the third-placed Sydney Swans at the SCG looming next Friday night.

"We've got a real challenge on our hands next week to go up to Sydney to knock them off on their home track, but we've done it before and we're capable of doing it again," Hardwick said.

We had no answer for Sandilands either.

How did that work out?

We got outcoached again simple. Beaten at our own game plan by a team that was prepared to run an create space/options when attacking, then man the F up when defending.
