Trent Cotchin says Richmond will bounce back from loss to Adelaide

RICHMOND is hoping it can draw on the sting of Friday night’s loss to Adelaide to spur it to victory against Gold Coast on Sunday.

The Tigers are in the top eight by just two points, but skipper Cotchin isn’t buying into the next month and the associated calculations.

As far as he is concerned, the team generally responds after such a disappointing loss, and he hopes this weekend is no different.

“I don’t think there’s any point in really searching for where we’re at or what it could look like in four or five weeks’ time,” he said on Tuesday.

“The reality is that we need to perform against Gold Coast on Sunday. That’s the challenge for our group and on most occasions we’ve come out and performed after a disappointing loss.

“The guys will work hard on the track this morning and follow that into Thursday and hopefully we can string four quarters together.”

Since they turned their season around with a win against Collingwood in Round 7, the Tigers haven’t suffered consecutive defeats.

On Sunday the Tigers play an unlikely bogy team in Gold Coast, which has won three of its four clashes against Richmond.

But this week marks the first time Richmond has played the Suns at the MCG, with star Brett Deledio likely to return after a week of illness.

Deledio said on social media yesterday he was “on his deathbed” with flu-like symptoms, with Cotchin confident his teammate will have recovered in time for Sunday.

But he couldn’t resist having a little dig.

“I think it was more that he didn’t want to have to carry tissues on the ground to blow his little sniffle that he had,” Cotchin said.

“No, he was pretty crook ... he’ll be fine to play this week. It was obviously very disappointing for him to miss and hopefully he’ll be back on his feet and training well today.”

The Tigers will be without Dylan Grimes and Reece Conca, who both suffered hamstring injuries against the Crows.

Typical Tigers? What's that, asks Cotchin

RICHMOND captain Trent Cotchin has dismissed the notion that it's typical of the Tigers to be inconsistent.

After knocking over reigning premiers Hawthorn, the Tigers crashed back to earth with a heavy loss to Adelaide last weekend to drop back to seventh on the ladder.

They have a chance to redeem themselves against Gold Coast on Sunday at MCG, and will have star midfielder Brett Deledio back from illness.

Cotchin bristled at suggestions that it was classic Richmond to lose games it was expected to win.

"I don't even knows what 'typical Richmond' means - we know what's expected of us and we didn't provide it," Cotchin said on Tuesday.

"You look at our eight to 10 weeks prior to that, I thought we were pretty steady.

"The challenge for us is to make sure that each week is a four-quarter performance."

Richmond has lost three out of their previous four clashes with 16th-placed Gold Coast, but all of those matches took place in Queensland.

Despite their lowly ladder position, Cotchin was wary of the Suns, who were 14-point winners over Brisbane Lions last round.

Since they turned their season around with a win against Collingwood in round seven, the Tigers haven't suffered consecutive defeats.

Cotchin predicted they would again respond well to their disappointing loss.

The game will be Cotchin's 150th and after eight seasons without a finals victory to his credit, the 2012 All-Australian was hopeful that his success-starved club was close to winning an elusive premiership.

"It's been a journey. I started at the footy club where we pretty much had bottomed out before we came back up the ladder," Cotchin said.

"What I'm most proud of is where the club has come from and got to.

"It's a great culture, it's a great place to be around and that's really good for us.

"It's a tremendous turnaround and now we're starting to see results going our way so the challenge for us is to continue that and hopefully a winning final or the ultimate success isn't too far away – you're envious of all players who play in premierships."

Cotchin appears to have taken the physical aspect of his game to a new level in 2015, but he insisted he has made few changes to the way he plays.

"The aggression is probably just been something that people might have picked up on and is more noticeable, whether that's because there's been a focus of it I'm not too sure," Cotchin said.

After being comprehensively beaten by Adelaide, Cotchin said his team had to use their impressive wins against Fremantle and Hawthorn this year as their performance benchmark for the rest of the season.

"We're challenging our group to play like with that same gusto for four quarters, the intensity," he said.
