Richmond interested in Carlton’s Matthew KreuzerHerald-Sun
September 9, 2015LIST chiefs and player managers have regular catch ups this time of year.
But Richmond list guru Blair Hartley had a special reason to have some brunch with ESP player agent Nigel Carmody in Richmond yesterday.
Out-of-contract Carlton ruckman Matthew Kreuzer is up for grabs and the Tigers are in the market.
Hartley and Carmody caught up at Richmond cafe 1000 blessings yesterday on the same day the Herald Sun revealed Collingwood’s strong interest in the mobile big man.
Carmody is Kreuzer’s long-time manager, and, after eight years at Carlton the No.1 pick is poised to leave Ikon Park in a move that could nab the Blues the No.2 pick in free agency compensation.
Carlton has already secured the coveted top choice after finishing last on the ladder on Saturday.
Talk about hitting the jackpot, Blues fans. Carlton list boss Stephen Silvagni would be ecstatic with their draft position.
The first two picks in this year’s draft will net them the best key position prospects in the land, key defender Jacob Weitering and Murray goal kicker Josh Schache.
Richmond is one of the interested parties in Kreuzer to help bolster its ruck support for ageing big man Ivan Maric.
But Hartley is highly regarded in club land and Richmond has made clear it won’t go overboard to snag Kreuzer.
Collingwood is believed to be the early frontrunner. But with the Tigers finishing fifth this year, ahead of Sunday’s elimination final against North Melbourne, Punt Rd would be an appealing destination, too, for Kreuzer.
He has played in two finals, in 2009 and 2013, but the Blues are in rebuilding mode over the next few years.
Then there is Fremantle, which is desperate for another goalkicking marking target.
Kreuzer is a free agent, so he would cost his new club nothing, other than his salary.
He is expected to attract offers in the vicinity of $500,000 a season and would earn the Blues Round 1 free agency compensation, in line with James Frawley’s move to Hawthorn last year.
But Kreuzer will begin stringent medical tests on his troublesome foot and reconstructed knee.
If Collingwood nabbed Kreuzer it could force burgeoning ruckman Jarrod Witts to find a new home.
