UPDATE: RICHMOND says it won’t be distracted by talk of North Melbourne resting a host of key players for Friday night’s mini-final

Stars Todd Goldstein, Drew Petrie and Brent Harvey are possible outs for the Kangaroos in a bid to keep them fresh for the finals.

The Tigers need to win to avoid a trip to Adelaide for an elimination final, but rising star Ben Lennon says he isn’t taking any comfort from the news.

“That’s out of our control,” he said on Tuesday morning.

“We’re just looking forward to playing whoever they put on the park. We’ve just got to stick to our process and play well.”

Really?  What can possibly be your problem with those comments?

A prime example of the hypocrisy of the AFL.  Melbourne FC, Bailey and Connolly each got suspended or fined a huge amount of money for tanking, yet this tanking by Fremantle and North is sanctioned!!  It's not only about the resting of players - what if it changes your finishing position on the ladder and means you get a higher draft pick?  What about old mate who's had a punt on the game last week, only to find that the information he relied on when placing his bet (that both teams would be trying to win and selected accordingly) has been rendered useless and misleading?  This is wrong on so many levels but as is becoming more and more a trademark of the McLachlan era, the leopard that is the AFL hasn't changed one single spot from the dark days of the Vlad era.  Rules are made to suit the circumstances at the time and principals or fair play have no place in any decision.  Disgraceful.   :thumbsdown :thumbsdown :thumbsdown

North will get pumped, morale of the club will go from good to bad.
Beat them by heaps the week after, and everyone who is saying well they deserved the right to rest players and its smart will be saying, ohhhh you shouldn't flirt with form!!
Who say's Gold Coast won't pull off one of the biggest miracles of 2015 home and away season.

Petrie claiming he, Boomer Harvey and other older Roos are still playing Friday night.

Roos preparing to rest up to 10 players for clash with Tigers
AFL.com.au
September 3, 2015

NORTH Melbourne has been given permission by the AFL to rest up to 10 players in Friday night's clash against Richmond, declaring fatigue and injury were the club's primary concerns at the selection table this week.

The Kangaroos will face the Tigers in an elimination final in Melbourne if they lose Friday night's clash, but they risk travelling to Adelaide to face the Crows in the first week of finals if they win.

Richmond must seek to win Friday night’s match or it also faces the prospect of travelling to Adelaide for an elimination final if the Western Bulldogs beat the Brisbane Lions and the Crows beat Geelong on Saturday.

If Richmond wins on Friday night, the Crows would likely be unable to improve their ladder position with a win over the Cats, and would have to travel to Melbourne for an elimination final.

Like Fremantle, which will rest up to 11 players in round 23, North Melbourne CEO Carl Dilena said securing a finals spot had given the Kangaroos the right to prioritise preparations for a flag tilt.

"The fatigue and injury status of our players will be the main consideration for team selection this week," Dilena said in a statement on Friday.

"At this stage, our initial assessment indicates that we may look to rest up to 8-10 players that played in round 22 against the Bulldogs.

"We have been in contact with the AFL regarding this process and have been given approval to go down this path should we need.

"Player management is critical all season, but more so now on the eve of another finals campaign."

Speaking before the Kangaroos released their statement on Thursday morning, AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said the League was comfortable with teams resting players as long as they weren't seeking to manipulate aspects of the competition.

"It goes to heart of why they're doing it … I get that if they're doing it because it improves their chance of success," he told Radio Sport National.

"Players at this time of year would be battered around for a while and may have been carrying things for a long period of time.

"If they think [a rest] aids their success and it's not about changing draft order or manipulating something like that – and they're open about it – then I think we understand that."

Dilena said the Kangaroos would stay in touch with the AFL on Thursday ahead of its team selection.

He said the club understood the repercussions the decision would have on VFL affiliate Werribbee, which has qualified for finals but will now be without a number of key players.

"This is an unprecedented situation and we have to do what’s best for our players in the circumstances," Dilena said.

Star forward Drew Petrie told AFL.com.au’s AFL Exchange podcast on Wednesday that the rested players wouldn’t necessarily come from North’s veterans.

“I’m definitely playing, Boomer’s playing, there’s heaps of the old boys playing,” he said.

What's stop Brisbane resting 10-11 of their players this week?

Would make sure of the number one draft pick.

AFL statement on North Melbourne team selection
AFL.com.au
September 4, 2015

The AFL advises it has been kept informed by the North Melbourne FC of its plans around selection for this weekend's round 23 match against Richmond.

Under the AFL Rules, as detailed earlier this week, North Melbourne is entitled to consider the management of injury and fatigue for its players before the upcoming Toyota AFL Finals series.

The rule states that: Clubs must at all times perform honestly and to the best of their ability in the pursuit only of legitimate competitive objectives. For the avoidance of doubt "legitimate competitive objective" includes the development of the team or players or management of player fatigue or injuries but does not include improving a Club’s draft position, improving a Club’s position with respect to a potential Player exchange or manipulating a Club’s position on the ladder for the purpose of improving its draw within the Finals Series.

It was the AFL's view that the North Melbourne side, having had consecutive six-day breaks, was legitimately managing the fatigue and injury status for their players ahead of the finals next week.

The objective facts and possible combinations of results over the weekend indicate that the club does not have an incentive to lose tomorrow night to manipulate its draw in the finals. As such, the AFL is satisfied North Melbourne's team selection decisions are in pursuit of legitimate competitive objectives.

'...manipulating a Club’s position on the ladder for the purpose of improving its draw within the Finals Series.'

How is this not exactly what they are doing?

They are clearly throwing the game to avoid playing Adelaide.
