Jon Ralph on SEN:

* Bennell was out late on the Thursday and again late on the Friday night. His manager said there were plenty of players out late at the Footy Show after-party but Ralph said those players aren't trying to impress a new club and show they've changed their ways.

* Ralph repeated that Bennell missed the medical and no one could find him or where he was.

* Ralph said Richmond probably thought if this what we've got to deal with then it's not worth it.

* Only chose Freo because they were the only ones left.

* Bennell apparently has told close friends that he's going to make Richmond and the other clubs pay for rejecting him.

Confused - Last week it was he was always going to Fremantle .

Now he's only going to Freo by default .

Can't wait for all this to implode on the Dockers .

sandilands is nearly finished.

an interesting aside......

a few weeks ago on an ABC pre game broadcast they were talking about Freo.

It was stated that Freo cannot land a big fish.......true!

the reason being that the the extra travel  requirments of the WA clubs is very taxing on players, supposedly taking up to two years off careers, in general.

Players managers are aware of this and point this out to players contemplating a move west.

Thus it makes it more difficult to to actively recruit high profile players for the WA teams

“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Bollocks. Doesn't take two years off their careers lmao.

Pavlich 33 going on 34 this December.
Sandi 32 going on 33 this December.
McPharlin and Johnson played plenty of footy this year too.

sandilands is nearly finished.

Many ex-WA players have said it took a massive toll.
I dont think it's BS.
It's a long flight back to Perth. It all adds up.

Maybe Pav could've made it to 36? Can't use there age now as an argument against you just have to take their word for it. Also doesn't necessarily mean they are going to retire 2 years earlier than they need to but all the extra management surely takes its toll.

Richmond had originally been the hot favourite to pick up the 2010 No. 2 pick, but officially withdrew its interest on the weekend after the first-round pick reportedly failed to show up for a medical examination.

However, Suns list strategy manager Scott Clayton understood that talks “had broken down” prior to the Tigers’ statement on Sunday.

Bennell’s manager Colin Young confirmed that Bennell did complete his medical at Richmond, and that there was “a couple” of offers on the table from a range of clubs.

Who knows what to believe.
Fine player who carries a huge suitcase.
My sense is he will cause Fremantle a heap of headaches and they'll regret this trade.

Bennell 'disrespected' Tigers in trade talks, says Dan Richardson (afl site)

Bennell 'disrespected' Tigers in trade talks

HARLEY Bennell disrespected Richmond when he visited the club as the Tigers looked to trade for him, general manager of football Dan Richardson says.

Gold Coast wanted Bennell out of the club after a string of off-field indiscretions and Richmond was interested in bringing in the star midfielder.

However the Tigers lost interest after Bennell met with them, and spent some time with midfielder Dustin Martin.

On Wednesday Bennell was traded to Fremantle for draft picks 16 and 35, with pick 22 going to the Suns.

Asked on NAB AFL Trade Radio on Thursday if he was disappointed with how Bennell presented himself, Richardson said, "Yeah, we were.

"We flew him over from Perth to find out a little bit more about him and where he's at, and we don't feel he gave that process a great deal of respect.

"Nor did his management, and that's why we moved on."

Bennell's manager is Perth-based Colin Young.

Bennell was cut from the Suns after an off-field incident in September, when he allegedly slapped a cigarette out of the mouth of a bouncer outside a nightclub.

He was charged by police and then later settled a public nuisance charge out of court.

The September 6 incident was the last straw in Bennell's troubled time with the Suns.

In July he was given a fine and a three-game suspended ban by the Suns after photos of him appearing to use illicit drugs at a Tasmanian hotel in 2013 were published nationwide.

Bennell was drafted at No.2 in the 2010 NAB AFL National Draft.

His talent has never been in doubt, with arguably his best performance coming in a win against Geelong in 2014 when he had 27 disposals and kicked six goals.

"He's now a Fremantle player," Richardson said.

"Maybe that's the way it was going all along, which is the reason why it transpired with us the way that it did.

"He's obviously a very talented young player.

"I don't want to be disrespectful.

"(The Dockers) are a strong club and I'm sure they're as good a chance as anyone to turning his life around and getting the most out of his footy.

"It just wasn't meant to be with us."

From Barrett's 'Sliding Doors' column ...

RICHMOND

IF ..... you try for lots of names and come up blank ...

THEN ... you probably shouldn't publicly throw mud at one of those players who said no to you.

Someone should tell Barrett that the RFC said no to Bennell; not the other way around.
