Doing it on the cheap and keeping our first rounder.
« on: September 27, 2015, 08:54:05 PM »
Seems to me no one wants to entertain this idea. It seems the thinking is  get a top line player at any cost  or bust.
Like most im all for getting a list need preferably a high quality list need. My preference is go hard at Carlisle but what if Essendon want too much in this case?? well we move on.

I just thought maybe we should also  focus on alternatives. What if we cant get a name player without selling the farm. I thought this thread could be for the lesser types who wont cost us.

Four  players im interested in are.
Jarred Redden dfa. -  Is a bit of a risk but i was super impressed with this bloke before injury hit and lobbe took over.
Lachlan Keefe dfa. -   This bloke showed heaps before his trouble with asada. We would have to wait 12months  before he could play  Collingwood are keen to re rookie him so that says something. If we didnt get Carlisle this bloke could be a steal.
Steve Johnson dfa. - We lack mids and we lack clever fwds. we get both with him and I dont care how old he is he has good footy left in him imo.
Jacob Townsend ??? - not sure of his status but likely to be cut by gws. Lovely big bodied mid who is a tackling machine  who still needs a bit of work.

You know if none work out we dont lose too much.
One  other player who is contracted is the Hawks  Angus Litherland. I really like this player and im sure he could be lured away from Hawthorn because of the lack of opportunity.193cm  hard running well skilled  backmen who can actually defend is the way the game is going.

Any way any thoughts on players  anyone, remember it about getting blokes on the cheap.

Litherland yes please and Anderson. Not sure if they are contracted. Ceglar I would take a look at also

After embarrassing ourselves to North I'm warming to SJ. Surely a bloke who actually wins finals is what we need

Yes to Okeefe as a rookie,  but first preference is to chase hard for Zac smith or leunburger

Not what this thread is about, take to one of the many other threads talking up big name players. Sheesh is it really that hard to  comprehend.

What is the point of an 17 year old that will take 4-5 year to become very good

When the window will likely be closed by such a time

Lol popular i dont think i have ever been popular with anyone  on here.
Look we all want a big fish and for some it seems at any cost. We still need to be looking at cheap options as well. Just thought it would be a good place to talk exclusively about those cheaper options weather we land a big fish or not.

Well some one hasn't learnt any lessons from the last 30 odd years.
Please explain what window are you talking about and when will it all happen.

I dont think you fully appreciate the gravity of this big fish syndrome

Considering Melb supposedly has whacked 10mill over 6 years for Dangerfield I have to agree with you Claw.
The trouble is identifying these players.

Players where other clubs are trying to bail eg Yarran or have trouble managing, eg Bennell are one way and probably full of drama which maybe we don't need BUT we do need something. Draftees just won't do it in their first 2 years and by then our window may have gone. We need to do something in these next 2 years or it is another wait I think.

Miles was a brilliant pick up for us and McIntosh has been handy as well, maybe GC or GWS players who have been in the system for 2 or 3 years but for some reason aren't getting a game are our best hunting ground??

Stevie J would probably be Ok, not expensive and you would have to say he would be in our best 22, if fit, no problems, but is he stopping someone from getting a game? I would hate to see him get a game in front of Lennon. ??

It's all in the lap of Blair and Hartley so hopefully they are working their butts off.

Isn't this the same "Moneyball" strategy the club has used in the past few years that so many posters here have derided? Whilst we haven't won a final we have got to the finals three years in succession from a list that, when Dimma took over, was compares unfavourably with Fitzroy. I think we are in pretty good shape and about 80% of the way there.

Shhh, dont be so positive on these boards  :clapping

I really dont think we need to load up on fringe players this season, a star or two would help but when you look at the list there is plenty of preasure for spots. There are at least 9 players that played though the season that were not in the finals team (mostly from injury, not lack of talent). Most are young and will be pushing for selection more next season. Sure there a couple that probably wont make it or will always be numbers 23-30 on the list but there is plenty of talent there as well. There are also a few that never got tried that some rave about as well but I hardly see any VFL so I wont comment on them.  Plus we have the draftees from this year to look foward to as well, I really dont think we need to chase to much borderline top 22 talent.
Here , kitty kitty. Here , kitty kitty.   AAAUGH!
