Eagle Gaspar may join Tiger brother
By Jake Niall

October 11, 2005

HAVING been unable to acquire him during the trading period, Richmond is considering recruiting West Coast key-position player Travis Gaspar in the pre-season draft.

The younger brother of Richmond full-back Darren Gaspar is uncontracted and could nominate for the December draft if he fails to come to terms with the Eagles, who have offered him a one-year deal. Travis Gaspar is not happy with a one-year contract offered by the Eagles.

Richmond tried to negotiate a trade for Gaspar last week, with the Eagles requesting an exchange of first-round picks — trading up from pick No. 13 to eight — in one of the dozens of proposed deals that didn't come to fruition.

Richmond director of football Greg Miller confirmed yesterday that the Tigers were interested in acquiring Gaspar via the pre-season draft, in which they have the fifth pick behind Carlton, Collingwood, Hawthorn and Essendon. "Yes, we are. We're interested in him," Miller said.

But he added that the Tigers were also considering another Eagle, Kasey Green, and Essendon's Ben Haynes, who was a Richmond rookie before he crossed to Windy Hill. Green also is out of contract and is believed to be considering a move to get more opportunities to play.

The Tigers discussed trades for Green and Haynes as well as Gaspar, having identified the trio as players they could afford under the stringent budget that has been imposed on the club's player payments.

Essendon is committed to Scott Camporeale with its pre-season pick, with the Blues, Pies and Hawks all considering their options.

If Gaspar, 24, were to go to Punt Road, it would be the second reunion of brothers at Tigerland, following Patrick Bowden's shift from Whitten Oval to join brother Joel. He also would be the second Gaspar to come to Richmond through the pre-season draft, his All-Australian brother having walked from Sydney following a contractual dispute before the 1996 draft.

Travis Gaspar's career has been blighted by injury since his 2001 debut. West Coast has long insisted that he had the talent to be an excellent key-position player and has kept faith in the 197-centimetre tall, who managed an aggregate of only seven games in the past two seasons.

Remarkably, Gaspar played his first game of 2005 in the preliminary final and retained his spot for the grand final. He performed better in the penultimate final than the epic finale.

I guess you get what you pay for :-\.

Green and Gaspar I can at least understand as we need to find key defenders but Ben Haynes! Argh! :scream

Gasper is a slow lumbering fumbler.

May be the best available though.

If Ben Haynes gets re-drafted by richmond Miller should be shot!

I know a lot of people won't agree with me but i'd be happy if we got Gasper, he is everything that we need.

1. Player in age group we are desperately lacking players.
2. KPP (197cm) defender.

Gaspar's been very injury-prone which is a worry. Only played 26 games in 5 years. He was a first round draft pick though.

I haven't seen enough of him to know if he's a better kick than his brother or not. Our Gas is a top full-back when injury-free but we can no longer afford to carry guys in the side particularly in the backline whose kicking is suspect under pressure if we want to seriously challenge for a premiership in say 3 years time.

If he's cheap contract wise I have no problems with it.

I thought in the finals Gaspar played he looked a cumbersome - bigger body than his brother and not very agile. Didn't have the thing enough to guage his skills. Though he did appear to have a very good elbow  ;D

Regarding Green - on GF day he looked lost - doesn't seem to have many footy smarts - Big Barry "When I whack 'em they're always in play" Hall led him a "merry dance" a number of times

Youre thinking of Damien Gaspar who played for Melbourne, Travis is the 3rd brother and has only ever been on the Eagles list.

This was on the EaglesFlyingHigh forum:

6PR interviewed Greg Miller, the recruiting manager from Richmond, who said that they were looking at 3 players and said that Gaspar wasn't a shoe in for that position, but was being looked at. He also said usually there are about 50 to 60 players out of contract just after the trade week and that by PSD day only 5 or 6 players would be available. He expected Gaspar to re-sign.

Heard the interview with GM on 6PR.

If Gaspar has not signed and is available, the Tigers should aggresively pursue him.  He is taller than Darren, a better kick, better below his knees, however does not have the closing speed of Darren.

More of a KPP, which would free up Simmo for rucking duties and provide greater flexibility in the RFC team structure for 2006 as Stafford would not be required in the 22.
