Let's see who can defend him now if he takes MRJ as well.

When Al clarkson went to north he didn't bleed them dry, so lets see what old mate Dimma does..

Also if you are not building a culture for these players to stay what does that say about the way the club is going now, on off the field  :shh

“Bleed them dry”

Getting a little dramatic there mate.

If we get good picks in return what’s the issue?

Could be a win/win.

Half this site doesn’t rate MRJ anyway.

“THERE’S BEEN NO DISCUSSION”: SUNS PLAY DOWN TALK SURROUNDING RICHMOND’S RIOLI

BY ANDREW SLEVISON
SEN
28 June 2024

Gold Coast has not touched base with Richmond regarding Daniel Rioli.

A Herald Sun report surfaced earlier in the week suggesting the Suns were prepared to give up two first-round draft selections for the three-time premiership Tiger.

Gold Coast’s GM of football performance Wayne Campbell has played down the talk, confirming the Suns have not even spoken with the Tigers.

Asked if that report was accurate, Campbell was succinct with his reply.

“No, no, no, no,” the former Richmond captain said on SEN’s Sportsday.

“I’ve been at the Giants and the Suns where players get talked about when they’re in your colours so I think that’s a bit unsavoury to talk about players from other clubs. Especially when they’re contracted for a couple of years.

“What I can assure you is that we haven’t offered Richmond two first-round picks for Daniel Rioli.

“There’s been no discussion with Richmond on it.”

Rioli, 27, is contracted with Richmond until 2027. He has a close relationship with Suns coach Damien Hardwick and reportedly caught up with Richmond’s premiership mastermind on the Gold Coast in April.

He is putting together another strong season as a dashing half-back, averaging 383 metres gained, 21.4 disposals and 4.7 rebound 50s.

In 2024, Rioli leads the Tigers for total disposals, is second for tackles and rebound 50s and third for metres gained.

Well obviously there's been no discussion because it's not allowed yet..... ;) :shh

I’d say over the past 10 or so years we’ve had 4 prominent players play that role. Newwy (pick 55), Houli (preseason draft pick), Short (rookie draft pick) & Rioli (pick 15 with the caveat that until a couple years ago had never played defence in his life). What I’m trying to get at here is as much as it’s a very important position, it’s one that has proven to be more than any other fillable with late/rookie picks or by converting mids/fwds to that role.

While I’m a big fan of dans, if GC gives us 2 first rounders I’d be saying thank you to Dimma let alone defending him. If he gives us 2 top10 picks I’d be flying to the Gold Coast and shaking his hand. Let’s get some top draft picks in to build the key position and midfield around and worry about the rest later.

Or it’s been agreed without the need to discuss?
“Rioli for picks 7 and 8”
“Done”
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Gold Coast is also expected to be in the market for Martin's premiership teammate Daniel Rioli, who could also look to explore his options despite a long-term contract at Punt Road that runs through until 2027.

However, armed with three first-round picks – the club's own, the Western Bulldogs' pick and an end-of-first-round selection tied to North Melbourne – the Suns do have the means to potentially lure the running defender north.

"It's probably similar, to be honest. He [Rioli] is a contracted player. We'd be crazy not to want to improve our list and that's what we're always trying to do," Burns said.

---------------------

The Suns will keep all options open given the bidding system might change, and the Tigers might soften on retaining Daniel Rioli. Right now, the Tigers are saying he’s contracted and going nowhere, but despite their public position, Gold Coast would offer two first-rounders for Rioli given one of them would end up about pick 28-30 after father-son and NGA selections.

Oh dear oh dear. There has to be some good players left when all the  vets go. The middle tier is weeded out and we have our fair share of kids failing..

Rioli again proves his worth

As the Tigers look to rebuild there has been plenty of talk of their anticipated post-season activity, with one conversation revolving around whether Daniel Rioli will stay or be traded to Gold Coast for a rumoured two first round picks at the National Draft. Whatever happens, the triple-premiership hero again showed how valuable he is. Rioli was his side's best player with a team-high 28 disposals and two goals off half-back. Now 27 years old but with plenty of good football ahead of him, it will be intriguing to see what the future holds.

Im in that half of the site. Been very critical but even i would like to keep him for one more season given who we should move on before him.
Think like Daniel he should be tried further up the field, in his case  as a mid who goes forward. To do that he needs to be as fit as he can be.
My biggest concerns with him has always been the fumbles the  lack of polish with his footskills and the lack of ball.. At age 22 for me next year would have been his make or break season.

Imo he has not done a lot since we have had him, and i dont think he would fetch much in a trade. Saying that  he has been thrown into that small forward grave yard and there is always the nagging thought of how would he go playing with more freedom as a mid.

Losing players like Daniel while he would greatly help at the trade table for picks we leave ourselves wide open of over the next few years not having enough good players in the  leadership age group. It makes becoming a NM a real possibility or a gcs who have had the picks but never had the good core group with experience to lead them or been able to hang onto them.

It could be a win win if we get the draft right and manage to find some good mature players. But it does also leave us vulnerable.

Cheeky Tiger 'slippery as an eel' on the wing

Daniel Rioli breaks multiple tackles with his mouthguard in an unorthodox position.

3 tackles
2 clearances
3 inside 50s
689 metres gained
6 score involvements

The one I'd be most inclined keep ...but he'll never be worth more than he is now or will there be the picks on offer which have an increased value & urgency with Tassie coming in....also need to factor in the potential knock on effect with MRJ....quite the conundrum... :shh

Yep. That is the issue.

I think we are absolute idiots to get rid of 2 Riolis. I mean some of the same idiots who opted to trade for hopper are going to be making this decision.
