RICHMOND Football Club’s investment in the region has continued with a host of SFNL junior footballers representing the club’s Next Generation Academy against Hawthorn’s NGA at Punt Road Oval on Sunday.

Robinvale-Euston’s Jeremiah Moimoi, Kuma Palatavake, Lolomanaia Fangufangu and Pawu Kirirua-Gill, Mildura’s Elijah Brown and Coby Peterson and Merbein’s Michael Hooker represented the Tigers in the second annual under-15 match.

Robinvale-Euston Eagle Eddie Waqalevu is also a part of the program but missed the game through injury.

The AFL is reviewing the contentious northern states academies and multicultural and Indigenous academies, seeking club input into how the academies should operate, including the rules for player eligibility and bidding at the draft.

The AFL has appointed former Carlton skipper and ex-Blues football operations chief Andrew McKay to review both the northern states academies and Next Generation Academies (NGA) for multicultural and Indigenous players that were established for the 14 clubs in traditional football states and which have been a source of friction.

The review - which AFL sources said would be "open-ended" - follows concern about how players have been tied to clubs, such as Collingwood gaining Isaac Quaynor and North's access to Tasmanian Tarryn Thomas, when those NGA recruits and others were already highly-accomplished youngsters in the elite squads and touted as certain AFL players when they were allocated via zones.

Aside from eligibility, the other main concern raised about the northern and multicultural and Indigenous academies has been the price that clubs have paid for high-value recruits, such as Sydney's Nick Blakey, Quaynor and Thomas - all of whom attracted bids within the first round of the draft, but whose clubs still traded out their first pick.

Two Richmond Next Generation Academy members will live together as boarders at Caulfield Grammar this year.

Mackenzie Cowley, a Year 10 student from Tongala started at the school last month, following the lead of Shepparton’s Will Dwyer (Year 11) who commenced in 2018.

Both Cowley and Dwyer are on Indigenous Scholarships at the school.

Richmond Tigers continue push into Mildura with sports course

RICHMOND Football Club general manager of football Neil Balme says the club’s continued push into the Sunraysia region will be boosted by the new Richmond Institute of Sports Leadership (RISL) campus, which will start classes in Mildura next year.

Delivered in partnership by Richmond and the Swinburne University of Technology, the program offers students the opportunity to develop into the next generation of sports industry leaders.

After launching a Melbourne campus at the Richmond Football Club’s Swinburne Centre in 2017, the program has since expanded regionally to Albury-Wodonga and now Mildura.

THE AFL has announced an $18 million, three-year boost for Victorian country football.

On Tuesday, the League revealed a significant chunk of the funding would flow from the abolishment of AFL Victoria affiliation fees, saving country clubs $3.22 million a year.

Umpire registration fees will also be scrapped, while the cost of club apparel will be reduced considerably.

As part of the arrangement, $950,000 will be made available to help club volunteers through digital and in-person support with administration, policy and breaches involving safeguarding children, social media and vilification.

Almost $2 million will also be dedicated to a strategic community investment fund and village hubs, which will assist club needs and work towards aligning schools with community and AFL clubs.

The Victorian state government will provide almost $1 million over the three-year period.

Richmond launch new AFL Border Academy

Richmond Football Club in partnership with AFL North East Border, Murray Bushrangers, AFL New South Wales and GWS GIANTS have committed to a new 12-week U/15 football training academy to strengthen pathways in the Border region.

The new AFL Border Academy will have training hubs in both Wangaratta and Albury-Wodonga with young players from all surrounding areas eligible.

Richmond Senior Club Advisor, Neil Balme, said the purpose of the program was to ensure junior footballers in the North East Border region received the best possible football education and development.

The Tigers’ Next Generation Academy (NGA) zone includes the Victorian side of AFLNEB, while GWS GIANTS have Albury and the Riverina as part of their jurisdiction.
