It was the zone the AFL designated us - so no wonder it's been a complete bust. They should've at least been rotated between clubs every couple of years or so.  Waste of time now under the new rules anyway. :shh

Youngsters shine at NGA Elite program

RFC website
16 February 2024

Richmond's Next Generation Academy is underway for the year, with the first NGA Elite program of 2024 held at the Swinburne Centre earlier this month.

Participants, aged 14 to 18, included some of the best young talent across the Tigers' NGA region, hailing from Coates League teams Bendigo Pioneers and Murray Bushrangers.

In January, Richmond held a training session for select members of their NGA academy. The session attended by both boys and girls was supported by KGI and VFL players Joel Garner and Pala Kuma.

The aspiring footballers were put through their paces as they experienced a 'day in the life' of an athlete at Punt Road, gaining valuable insights into elite behaviours.

They underwent a tough training session at Tigerland, and spent time with Richmond staff, who educated the footballers about talent pathway opportunities.

All participants, who also began their Coates League pre-seasons this month, demonstrated a positive attitude and brought plenty of energy to the day.

The future is looking bright for the talented youngsters, who'll be aspiring to follow in the footsteps of recent participants such as Pala Kuma, who was recently signed to the Club's VFL side.

Budding young footballers and siblings Ellie and Tanner Armstrong, who hail from Shepparton, said they had developed important on and off-field skills throughout the three years they had been involved in the program.

Seventeen-year-old Ellie, who idolises AFLW Tiger Monique Conti, said being drafted by Richmond was her ultimate dream.

Her younger brother Tanner, who is 15 and attends boarding school at Scotch College, remarked that leadership was the biggest thing he had taken away from the program.

"We've attended all of the camps that they've put on for all the kids around our area. It's been a good opportunity that other kids don't get," he said.

"Most of all, (we) have fun and enjoy every moment."

The Richmond Academy introduces the game of Australian Rules to both boys and girls, aged 5-18 years, who are from Indigenous and multicultural backgrounds where they may not have been exposed to the sport before.

Launching in early 2016, Richmond has focused its Academy engagement and talent identification to the Goulburn Murray, Bendigo, Sunraysia, and North Central areas of Victoria.

The region includes AFL Central, Central Murray, Goulburn Murray, North East Border, Sunraysia and Wimmera Mallee – the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers catchments.

It’s as lame as round zero
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

BATTLE LOOMS FOR FATHER-SON

Carlton and Richmond will both have priority access to exciting under-16s talent Cody Walker, the son of former Blues star Andrew.

Walker qualifies as a father-son to the Blues where his dad was a former No.2 draft pick and played 202 games with the club.

But the 2026 draft prospect, who starred in Saturday's under-16s clash for Vic Country with two goals and plenty of highlights, is also in Richmond's Next Generation Academy given the Indigenous youngster is in the Tigers' Murray Bushrangers zone.

The draftee gets to choose which club he nominates for under AFL rules, with similar circumstances happening for other players in the past, including Maurice Rioli jnr, who was eligible to Richmond and Fremantle as a father-son and also Essendon as a NGA player but ultimately nominated as a father-son with the Tigers.

Walker played as a half-forward/midfielder and booted two long goals, showing his speed and class as a standout talent in the carnival.

Has there ever been anyone not named Marc Murphy that didn’t want to play for the club their dad played for?

He will go Blues and why wouldn't he?

Dad played there and they look like contenders. We are at the start of a rebuild and sitting near the bottom of the ladder.

Ladies and Gentleman,

He is 100% going to Carlton.

Already has been under Carlton's academy, training there since last year.

Move right along, don't waste your fingers typing about this anymore.

Great humble young man, Andrew and family are lovely. Just hope he has recovered from the little niggle last year  :shh

Next Generation Academy Tigers standing out at higher levels

RFC website
15 August 2024

Richmond’s Next Generation Academy Tigers have shown their talents at representative level in recent hit outs, highlighting the talent in the Club’s region.

Spanning across AFL Central, Central Murray, Goulburn Murray, North East Border, Sunraysia and Wimmera Mallee, which are the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers regions, there is a great depth of young players emerging.

Youngsters Cody Walker (Echuca) and Tanner Armstrong (Rumbalara/Scotch College) were each named in the Under 16s All Australian squad off the back of excellent National Championships playing for Vic Country.

Russell Clark (Wentworth) also earned selection for Vic Country’s squad; however, he was an emergency for the main games, having had an interrupted lead-up to the campaign due to injury.

Walker, who was named captain for both the All Australian team and Vic Country, and Armstrong put in standout performances across three matches as Vic Country claimed the title on aggregate.

The talented Echuca product, Walker, dominated the tournament with an average of 28 disposals to be named as Vic Country’s Overall MVP.

Armstrong was also noted as a valuable player, receiving Vic Country’s Coaches’ MVP for his outstanding role as a small defender.

The youngster provided run and drive off halfback with an average of 21 disposals, 3.3 tackles, and 4.7 rebound 50s across the tournament while also shutting down highly-rated small forwards from the opposition.

In thrilling style, Vic Country’s final win was due to a “Golden Point” after scores had finished level.

Mildura product Jemmika Douglas also featured twice for Vic Country earlier in the year, impressing with her attack on the ball and long kicking out of defence.

Douglas who is an alumnus of Richmond NGA teams, also played a VFLW game for Carlton during the season.

The Tigers’ current U/15s NGA teams competed at AFL Victoria’s NGA Carnival in April across both boys and girls.

The girls team featured 20 talented young female footballers from the Richmond NGA region; with Emmerson Lihou, Ashanti Walker and Leisi Kiriua-Gill named best players.

Lihou and Kiriua-Gill also travelled to Brisbane to play for the AFL’s Woomeras U/15s Girls team.

Richmond’s U/15 Boys team showed great synergy across their three matches, scoring over 200 points and conceding just seven in strong displays.

The NGA Carnival included cultural elements for the participants, such as a welcome to country and an African drumming workshop.

Richmond was thrilled to see a total of 18 NGA Tigers selected for the AFL’s Kickstart carnival held over the July school holidays, off the back of the Victorian NGA matches.

Kickstart is an AFL initiative for both boys and girls that sees a U/15s Indigenous team play against an All-Nations side of multicultural backgrounds.
