‘The season is absolutely not over’

Herald-Sun
29 April 2016

RICHMOND has turned back the clock as it looks to turn its season around, drawing on the nine-match winning streak it completed to make the 2014 finals series.

The Tigers are 1-4 and host Port Adelaide on Saturday night at the MCG as they look to turn their fortunes, with forward Ty Vickery adamant the season is anything but over.

He said the team has been talking about what it achieved two years ago, and is confident it can deliver a repeat performance to resurrect its September chances.

“We’ve had a fair few chats over the last few weeks that we’ve done it before,” he said on SEN on Friday morning.

“We’ve thought the whole time that provided we get our game up and going, we can put together really consistent football against every opposition. We think that the season is absolutely not over and we’re focused on turning it around.”

Not losing belief is a key focus for the side, Vickery said, which is also missing key back Alex Rance for the next two games due to suspension.

“There is an element of losing belief, and it’s one of those things — how do you get it back without winning? It’s really tough,” he said.

“There’s frustration from fans and pressure from the outside world.

“We feel frustration with ourselves as much as anything. We don’t want to have to be chasing and pick up games later in the year and playing from behind. We need to start turning it around as soon as possible.”

The Tigers have made two changes for the clash against the Power, with Brett Deledio to make his return from injury, while Shaun Hampson returns.

Coach Damien Hardwick dropped midfielder Jacob Townsend, while Alex Rance is suspended.

Hardwick says it’s time for his players to respond against the undermanned Power.

“We put the acid on players on a weekly basis with players on their performance - they get rated incredibly heavily,” Hardwick said.

“We forensically examine their games and they get adequate feedback on a weekly basis, so the acid is always there.

“It’s a performance-based industry - if you don’t perform you play seconds football.

“We’ve dropped a number of guys this year because of that ... the players know they’re paid to perform.”
