'Dumb' Tigers just not good enough: Hardwick

Hardwick: 'We embarrassed ourselves tonight' Damien Hardwick unable to defend Richmond's 'dumb football'

FRUSTRATED Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says the Tigers played "dumb" football during Saturday night's disastrous loss to Port Adelaide and failed to execute fundamental skills that a local team would expect to nail.

The Tigers (1-5) watched their season slip further away from any hope of salvation after stumbling to a fifth straight defeat, this time by 35 points, in an uninspiring contest against a gritty Power outfit at the MCG.

Richmond won the contested possession count (+21) and clearances (+6) but only managed eight goals from 54 inside 50s against a Port Adelaide team similarly lacking in self-belief.

"Within the contest we were OK (but) we were beaten outside through spread," Hardwick said post-match.

"Offensively we couldn't get anything going, we had no run off half-back and were bombing the ball inside 50.

"We had a plan in place and at no stage did we put that plan in place."

Asked if the Tigers played "dumb football", Hardwick replied: "Dumb's an interesting comment … it probably was, really."

Despite giving his troops a "rev-up" at half-time and coaching from the sidelines during the third quarter, the Tigers couldn't put any scoreboard pressure on the Power, with their shocking skills and inaccurate goalkicking proving costly.

"The effort's there, we're just not good enough at the moment," Hardwick said.

"We're not executing the things we know and should do. We're missing kicks, missing handballs, missing tackles – just the fundamentals of the game and the things a local football side should be doing, we're not doing.

"Execution is such a key component of this game and if you don't do it properly you get burnt.

"We'll go through it again, it's been a common trend. We're inexperienced in certain areas but so are they.

"It's not a youth thing, we're just not quite good enough at the moment."

However, Hardwick pointed to the absences of Nick Vlastuin and Dylan Grimes as critical losses from the Tigers' middle age bracket, leaving too many youngsters asked to deliver above their "pay grade".

"(With) Vlastuin not playing, Grimes not playing, we're missing a couple of those guys that are really important pieces in the puzzle for us," he said.

"We're probably asking guys to step up a little bit above what their pay grade is at the moment.

"But the reality is it comes back to me and our coaching staff – we're the ones who have got to drive the message across and make sure it is getting across."

Richmond is staring down the barrel of being three wins outside the top eight after just six rounds if West Coast overcomes Collingwood in Perth on Sunday.

It doesn't get any easier for the Tigers either, with a wounded Hawthorn and the flying Sydney Swans to come.

"We've got a big game, Friday night footy versus Hawthorn, and we really embarrassed ourselves tonight I thought with the way we played," Hardwick said.

"We've got to bounce back and play with some dignity next week because at the moment we're well short of where we need to be."

Souring the loss for the Tigers was a suspected punctured lung suffered in the first quarter by Kane Lambert, who was sent to hospital in an ambulance.

Hardwick said late withdrawal Kamdyn McIntosh (corked leg) should be fit to face Hawthorn, with the Tigers taking a cautious approach with the youngster after two weeks off training.

Dimma: We’re just not good enough

Herald-Sun
May 1, 2016

RICHMOND has lurched deeper into disarray after a fifth straight loss so deplorable coach Damien Hardwick compared the Tigers to a local side.

Hardwick said his side “embarrassed ourselves” in a 35-point loss to an injury-ravaged Port Adelaide and remains frustrated over Richmond’s glut of basic skill errors.

The under-siege coach, again staring down the barrel with matches against Hawthorn and Sydney to come, kept his players behind closed doors for nearly 20 minutes post-match.

“We’re missing kicks, we’re missing handballs, we’re missing tackles. Just the fundamentals of the game that are simple and a local football side should be doing, we’re not doing,” Hardwick said.

“The effort is there. We’re just not good enough at the moment, We’re not executing the things we know and should do. We’ve got to bounce back and play with some dignity next week because at the moment we’re well short of where we need to be.

“As a club we’re disappointed with what we’re presenting to our fans and we’ve got to got to get back on track.”

Salting a worsening wound was a serious injury to tough midfielder Kane Lambert, who the club fears has a punctured lung after a first quarter collision.

The Tigers were strong in contested ball and clearances, but were shambolic in possession. Defensively, they couldn’t — or wouldn’t — stop the Power moving the ball through them and had 28 fewer tackles.

Richmond could manage only eight goals, none in the last quarter with its season on the line.

Asked if it was dumb football, Hardwick said: “Dumb is an interesting comment. It probably was.”

“We couldn’t get any phase of our game up and going at all. (We were) beaten outside through spread, had no run off half-back, bombed the ball inside 50m. We had a plan in place and at no stage did we put that plan in place.”

In desperation, Hardwick went to coach from the bench in the third quarter “to make sure they were all on the same page”, but only got a closer look at his side squandering opportunities.

He wouldn’t buy into talk of season-defining games or lost seasons, but admitted he took heart from his side digging itself out of similar holes in the past two seasons.

“It’s funny, generally the first win is the hardest,” he said.

“Whenever you’re in this position it always seems like it’s so far away, that next win. It’s certainly doable though. I’ve got great faith in the players we have, the coaches and all those people involved that we can get back on track.”

Hardwick: Tigers were 'embarrassed' and guilty of 'dumb' football

Jon Pierik
The Age
May 1, 2016

Seething Richmond coach Damien Hardwick says the Tigers "embarrassed ourselves", lost dignity and played "dumb" football in a dispiriting six-goal loss to Port Adelaide which appears to have all but ended their hopes of making the finals.

The Tigers dropped their fifth-straight clash at the MCG on Saturday night and now face the prospect of tackling an angry Hawthorn side on Friday hurting after their own humbling defeat to Greater Western Sydney earlier on Saturday.

The Tigers' post-mortem began quickly when Hardwick pulled skipper Trent Cotchin and the team leaders behind closed doors for five minutes before hauling in the rest of the team. The meeting, also attended by chief executive Brendon Gale and head of football Dan Richardson, then lasted for another 10 minutes.

In a damning appraisal of his team's performance, Hardwick said the players were unable to execute their game plan at any stage.

"We couldn't get any phase of our game up and going at all night. We were beaten around — probably within the contest we were okay — but beaten outside through spread, offensively couldn't get anything up and going, had no run off half-back, bombing the ball inside 50. (We) had a plan in place but at no stage did we actually put that plan in place," he said.

Asked if the players had been guilty of "dumb" football, he replied: "Yeah, dumb is an interesting comment – yeah, probably was, really."

The Tigers had been expected to at least challenge for a top-eight berth this season after three-straight elimination-final defeats but the season has gone horribly wrong.

Hardwick, set for another week under intense media and public spotlight, challenged the Tigers to regain their "dignity" against the Hawks.

"We have a big game – Friday-night footy versus Hawthorn. We really embarrassed ourselves tonight I thought with the way we played. We have got to bounce back and play with some dignity next week because, at the moment, we are well short of where we need to be," he said.

"We are disappointed with our performance. As a club, we are disappointed with what we are presenting to our fans and we have to regain some ... have got to get back on track."

Hardwick said he had used the team meeting to "just go through the game and just where it unfolded".

"We thought we wanted to play a certain way and it just didn't come to fruition at any stage. Port Adelaide, to their credit, were pretty good... it probably looked like two sides that were not quite at their best tonight but they were good enough at the right times to get a result," he said.

"The easy thing is to rant and rave. It's the methodical message you have to look for to get your boys back on track. The effort is there – we are just not good enough at the moment.

"We are not executing the things we know and should do. We are missing kicks, missing handballs, missing tackles, just the fundamentals of the game that are simple.

"Things that a local football side should be doing, we are not doing. Execution is such a key component of this game that if you don't do it properly, you get burnt. We will go through it again.

"It has been a common trend. We are inexperienced in certain areas but so were they. It's not a youthful thing – we are just not quite good enough at the moment."

The Tigers have rebounded from poor starts in the past three seasons — they were 2-4 in 2013, 3-10 in 2014 and 3-3 last year — to regain momentum and make the finals. But only one team since 1994 has started the campaign 1-5 and featured in September.

"I have been thinking each game is season-defining at the moment. The competition is so even. We just have to worry about getting the four points, and don't worry about putting the games on the line and all that sort of stuff," Hardwick said.

"Our players have just got to, our club in general just has to bounce back and play some respectable football which we are capable of playing but we haven't seen it."

The Tigers missed suspended All-Australian defender Alex Rance, while Hardwick said the absence of injured pair Nick Vlastuin and Dylan Grimes also hurt.

They were down to three men on the bench early, after Kane Lambert was taken to hospital with a suspected punctured lung.

Skipper Trent Cotchin had a subdued night, finishing with 19 disposals, but Dustin Martin was superb (31 disposals, 16 contested, seven inside 50s) while Brett Deledio was strong in his first game of the season after recovering from a quad injury.

Perhaps he could star in the sequel to Dumb and Dumber, the quest of a loser trying to find 4 points - it could be called Dumb and Dimma
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

No your wrong. Rant and rave! Tell these panty wearers they're too bloody soft and would be lucky to get a game with Langwarrin reserves.

This softly, softly approach to footy coaching isn't working clown!   You've lost them and they're not listening to you anymore.
The club that keeps giving.

lol, we have been playing a certain type of dumb football consistently under this coach. No need to repeat my self on what it is, but when the same problem is there for so long, it can be no one but the coach.

Maybe this is what blobbo meant when he said Hardwick is a brilliant coach, as he enjoys seeing Richmond play garbage dumb football?

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

Nail in coffin for mine.

When effort is there and you lose by 100 points it's a playing list issue. When you lose by a few goals it's a coaching issue.

Dumb football comes from poor or little leadership and coaching.

You are done Damien.

My faves

Within the contest we were OK (but) we were beaten outside through spread," Hardwick said post-match.

What contests was he watching ??

"We're probably asking guys to step up a little bit above what their pay grade is at the moment.

They're pay grade ??
LMAO.
Sounds like an accountant mentality.
I thought when they stepped out onto thy hallowed turf, they were equal.....silly Ox.
It's no good when the coach makes financial references about a team that is already suffering as a result of himself.

"But the reality is it comes back to me and our coaching staff – we're the ones who have got to drive the message across and make sure it is getting across."

If that's the reality, why don't you and your port mates quit...and take benny, Peggy, Blair and Francis with you.

“Whenever you’re in this position it always seems like it’s so far away, that next win. It’s certainly doable though. I’ve got great faith in the players we have, the coaches and all those people involved that we can get back on track.”

Now he has great faith again. Lololoz

AGAIN WITH THE PHASES!!Further proof he has Nfi and is reliant on unpredictable "phases" of the game. Wtf is he, Galileo???? If you had to buckle the guy for having no clue, this would be a evidentially huge.

HAHAHA. to make sure they were on the same page.LMAO.
Get rid of this man who makes spud frawley look intelligent.

“It’s funny, generally the first win is the hardest,” he said.

Yes.Its really funny.

If this isn't a guy who has lost whatever part of the plot he may have once had, I'll go he.

My favourite part is when he hampered on the game plan was x and y but the PLAYERS. Do their own thing ignoring instruction

Well moron, are you nae in charge of that?

Might be time to fall on your own sword for honour sake

Literally or otherwise

Further to that, why do you continue to back in those players that are continually ignoring them or unable to follow them?

Not according to WP.
Us having 1 against 4 in our forwardline most weeks can work.
Getting something as simple as a one on one in our forwardline is to difficult to get the players to follow.

Clearly it is because they refuse or not capable of following. Plan isnt to have 1 on 4

Mock me if you like (even in  jest) but the game plan was clearly explained yesterday and it isnt hard to understand and the players are clearly not followong it.
