Tiger players declare: We love Dimma

Herald-Sun
May 3, 2016

RICHMOND midfielder Shaun Grigg has defended his under-siege coach Damien Hardwick and says the playing group must share responsibility for its dismal start to the season.

The Tigers are 1-5 after six rounds and still remain hopeful of playing finals this year, and Grigg says Hardwick remains the man to take them there.

“100 per cent. We back Dimma 100 per cent as players,” he said today.

“We love him. He’s not out there playing, so we take a shared responsibility.”

Grigg refuted the suggestion that Hardwick has taken the group as far as he can after three straight elimination final losses, and said the club is playing the waiting game for its hard work on the track to show on game day.

“We go through our normal process,” he said.

“We’re a pretty tight-knit group and always have the honest conversations. It’s just waiting for these things to come out on game day and I’m sure they will.

“It’s on all of us to step up and pick up the slack.

“We believe that our best footy is good enough. We’ve just got to get back to how we were playing and hopefully that can come out on game day.”

Richmond captain Trent Cotchin had surgery on his broken cheekbone on Monday night and is expected to return to the club on Thursday.

'Our best footy is good enough': Grigg confident Tigers can turn it around

Richmond is a club under siege after a disastrous start to the AFL season but Shaun Grigg says external attacks won't stop the Tigers working hard behind the four walls of their Punt Road fortress.

The club has come under intense scrutiny after an unconvincing round one win over Carlton was followed by a five-game losing streak that has them languishing in 15th place on the AFL ladder.

Tigers' list is 'capable', says Brendon Gale

But Grigg says the players' sole focus is on turning their season around - a task they still believe is possible despite admitted failures of skill execution and other fundamentals of their game.

"We respect the people within our four walls who are giving us advice ... we can't listen to all the external pressures or comments," Grigg told reporters on Tuesday.

"We just listen to our coaches and teammates and go about rectifying it.

"In here we believe that our best footy is good enough, which we've shown over the past couple of years. We've just got to get back to how we were playing and hopefully it will come out on game day."

Richmond's season hit a new low with last week's listless 35-point loss to an under-strength Port Adelaide at the MCG, where injuries to skipper Trent Cotchin (fractured cheekbone) and Kane Lambert (fractured ribs) compounded the Tigers' woes.

Neither will be present when Richmond take on reigning premiers Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night, with star defender Alex Rance also missing as he serves out his two-match ban for striking Melbourne's Jack Watts.

"It's on all of us to step up and pick up the slack," Grigg said.

"We definitely believe in ourselves ... we've just got to work hard on the training track and implement what (the coach) wants us to."

He also said we had been playing more kids than usual naming Cellis, Menadue and McIntosh.
McIntosh is in his 4th year. The reason he seems reasonably new is didn't get a game for 2 years.
We have played a couple more kids this year but so do a lot of other teams. Just because you play a few kids don't automatically give you the right to blame "playing kids" for playing like a VFL side.

As I said the other day, Hawthorn blooded 7 first year players in one year last year or the year before.
We have played 1 first year kid to date.

Just more poo spilling out of the RFC.

Why doesn't someone ask a player why they are apparently refusing to follow the gameplan devised by their much loved, "100% supported"coach?
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

I suspect it isnt a case case of refusal, but one of of not understanding
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."
