We'll turn around AFL form: Jack Riewoldt

SBS
3 May 2016 - 10:16 PM

Richmond star Jack Riewoldt welcomes their underdog status for Friday night's must-win AFL clash with Hawthorn and is adamant their form will turn.

The Tigers will take a five-game losing streak into the MCG match and captain Trent Cotchin is out with a fractured cheekbone.

Kane Lambert also will not play because of fractured ribs and star defender Alex Rance is serving the second week of his two-game suspension.

"We certainly think we can win this week," Riewoldt told AFL360.

"Everyone thinks Hawthorn is going to win ... that's the way we like it."

Riewoldt added that the Tigers still had great faith in their leaders around the club.

A major issue is confidence, with Riewoldt saying hard work is the solution.

"It's a bit of a chicken and the egg theory about confidence - does it come from winning games and then guys feel more at home and more confident?

"Or is it you turning the page and making the confidence come?

"Personally, I think it comes from hard work and I can hand-on-heart say here that the boys are putting the hard work in behind the scenes.

"The weight of numbers will turn ... we give ourselves every chance (against Hawthorn)."

Riewoldt: Our focus is on the next win

RICHMOND has found the last few weeks “hard to cop”, star forward Jack Riewoldt says, and has done some digging ahead of Friday night’s clash with Hawthorn.

The Tigers are 1-5 after six rounds but Riewoldt is adamant that the team’s belief has not been shaken.

“Obviously we’ve been in a similar position now for the last three weeks — we’ve lost games that we felt we should have been in and we should have won and they’re hard to cop,” he said.

“It’s still about the process and I think we’ve uncovered a few things that we think we can take into this week. It’s going to be an interesting weekend for us.”

The 27-year-old believes the only way confidence can be boosted is via hard work — and he says they’re doing plenty of it.

“I can hand on heart say that the boys are putting in the hard work behind the scenes,” he said on Fox Footy.

“And the weight of numbers will turn. Right now, our focus is on the next win. We’re playing (Hawthorn) and we give ourselves every chance.

“Everyone thinks Hawthorn is going to win. That’s the way we like it.”

The team’s nine-game winning streak that took it to the 2014 finals series still serves as a reminder for Riewoldt, who backed the club’s leadership that he said has a proven track record through tough times.

Clearly two clubs with different success and totally different mindsets. The consensus this week is that an angry Hawks following their smashing at the hands of GWS will come out breathing fire and blow the Tigers away. Funny how the Tigers also badly beaten are expected to meekly accept the Hawks punishment.

As a supporter i understand that the Hawks have been the benchmark of the competition for some time but a complete effort is all i am asking. We dont have to win, just want to see some consistent effort and putting bodies on the line, not too much to ask of professional footballers...I dont think it is.

The common theme this season from the RFC is that we come out after a loss as damaged goods but other teams after a bad loss come out as bigger and better for the experience and wanting to prove a point. Our meek response has been to play the first 5 mins as if we really mean it but then simply go back to our old insipid ways.

Its obvious we dont have the cattle but if Hardwick is the coach we are all being told he is then he should be able to lift the effort to a respectable level. If players do not respond accordingly then they get dropped, of course then its a situation as to whether Hardwick will make the tough calls and is really building for the future or already in self preservation mode

Well, you are asking too much

It is evident you will not get a complete effort from your Griggs houlis Chaplins hampsona types as they are weak and or dumb individuals
Then he grabbed two chopsticks and stuck them in his mouth , pretending to be a walrus
