So McRae at least likes players to play their strengths....well that alone makes him a better coach than Half-Step....

He also seems to only talk to the players about their strengths. It's all well and good to concentrate on players strengths, positive enforcement blah blah, but how do you improve if you dont address the weaknesses?

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

You're better off getting your strengths sorted out than trying to improve your weaknesses.
Ideally the team has players that have complementing strengths so overall there are no weaknesses...

what do you have sort out about your strengths? you are already good at that.
it is improving your weaknesses that will make you a better player.

do you allow a player who works hard forward of the ball but is lazy as poo when the opposition have possession to continue to do so and just keep encouraging him to work hard forward and ignore his unwillingness to work back?

do you allow a ruckman who is a great tap ruckman but just stands there watching once the ball hits the ground and doesn't take a mark around the ground to continue on that way and only concentrate on what he already good at?

You are looking at it incorrectly. If you are lazy, chances are you're always going to be lazy. If you can't take a mark when you are recruited, chances are you're never going to be a good mark.
The best example is kicking. If you can't kick at 17 you're not going to be an elite kick ever.
What you are talking about is development through childhood and adolescence. I'm talking about players past that point. Hopefully you recruit players that don't have major deficiencies. Their strengths though are what attracted you to them and do if you can hoan them you create weapons. You build a team that has many different weapons.
The best example is if you're a poor shot for goal. What's the point of trying to make someone a great shot for goal as you'll almost certainly fail. If they are a reasonable field kick and a great mark, play them in the backline. Utilize their strengths. There's no point wasting your time on things that should have been worked on years ago.

Also I think we are also talking about PLAYING to ones strengths compared to DEVELOPING ones strengths or weaknesses. Sure you should try to improve areas of your game that are weaker but you should use your strengths during a game. What's the point of trying to use your weaknesses more than your strengths?

im not talking about what you use during a game, but what aspects the coaches concentrate on to make you a better player.

Fair enough but what McRae was eluding was the former, not the latter.

Went down to game on Sat (from Canberra so take any opportunity to see Tiges when in Melbourne).

Few general thoughts. Our VFL team unfortunately has many of the same issues as our seniors. So many poor turnovers and bandpasses missing the mark. Our ball movement was slow and predictable and we kick to contests never giving our more skilled forwards 1 v 1 opportunities. Port on the other hand moved the ball with long kicks and looked much more dangerous with ball in hand. Stood next to Chocco. He was losing his mind at how many of our blokes were behind their man and got out marked when a scrubby kick came forward. With regards to individuals:

Marcon - Cracked in hard and was our best mid. Can't see him ever making it in the AFL though. Seems quite small out there and isn't particularly athletic or explosive.

Hunt - Got plenty of the ball but plays a very loose role sitting free on the opposite flank. Went to water anytime there was contact, much like he does in the AFL. Didn't see much run and carry from him either. Should be delisted at seasons end.

A Moore - Just looked at the stats and noticed he had 24 possies. Honestly didn't even notice him. Not damaging in the slightest. Why did we recruit him again?

Broad - Did a couple of things that were 'AFL like'. Some good intercept marks and one particularly good square up kick on his left to McBean where he showed plenty of composure. Actually is a reasonable long kick as well. Shocking short kick though. Unfortunately he's kind of the inverse Jake Batchelor in that his offensive work is up to AFL level but he's pretty poor defensively. Get's beaten in 1 v 1's a lot. Don't think he'll make it but would like to see him get a couple games soon.

Townsend - Was poor like Moore i thought. When he did get the ball he butchered it like he has in the AFL and got caught twice holding the ball trying to do too much. There's no upside here unfortunately guys.

Astbury - Was solid except for one shocking turnover late from a kick across goal. He's a good VFL defender and doesn't get beaten 1 v 1. The problem is he doesn't show any AFL attributes fm. Still just looks slow. I think he's reasonable depth but probably shouldn't be best 22 if we're pushing forward

Butler - Was quiet to begin but really came into the game in the 2nd half. Played as more of a high half forward than a goalsneak. Did some good things and showed some dash but did some things as well which make me question whether he's a very smart footballer. Was wide open on the lead in one instance and just ran under the ball in almost comical fashion. Chocco lost his mind here again. Feel like we're trying him in that Dahlhaus type role as a high hff but i think he lacks the footy smarts.

C Moore - Certainly a specimen. Athletic and physical. Not sure how tall he is but looked smaller (193 i would have guessed) than other kph players. Was moved forward in the 2nd half and didn't seem to have much of a clue. Took one very good grab but seems a long way off.

McBean - I've been a huge proponent of getting mcBean in the 1's (admittedly having not watched him play live). Unfortunately, I lost hope on Sat that he would ever make it in the AFL. He was lazy and repeatedly got caught behind giving up easy marks. Chocco was blowing up. Lacks any kind of a physical presence. Seems rather one dimensional as a lead mark type guy with good skills. Probably doesn't help that the ball is put on his head a bit but he's essentially Ty Vickery but in the VFL. Extremely frustrating.

Chol - Looks great when he times his run and jump properly. Has nice clean hands as well. Seeing him live he might be skinny at this point but he's got a great frame and should fill out to be a pretty impressive physique. Gets caught in no mans land a lot at this point (i.e. 2 or 3 m's of pack). Not near AFL ready but I think there's a bit to work with.

Lennon - Only played the first half (anyone know why?). is noticeably clean at this level despite dropping a few marks he would normally take. Looks like he should dominate but just kinda doesn't. Not sure about his tank still and as he was still playing forward. I'd rather see him getting some run in his legs on the wing at VFL level. Reckon this guy might continue to frustrate..

Markov - Barely touched in the first half but did a couple of things in the 3/4 quarter that were really impressive. His speed and willingness to take the game on was noticeable. If he fills out he will be a good size as well. Just needs to start finding the footy.

Maric - Ivan is cooked. It was actually quite sad watching him labour around the ground and have little to no impact. Won plenty of hitouts but doesn't have the impact at ground level or aerially he used to. Can't say I saw a lot of his vaunted leadership also. Chocco was imploring him to impact contest and he just couldn't do it. I think we might see a lot more of Hampson for the rest of the season.

Think that's everyone. I know we want to see kids played but no one is putting there hand up at this point. Pretty unimpressive stuff.

Thanks HOD  :thumbsup

Pretty grim stuff in the twos. Although I am looking forward to seeing how Markov develops.

Thanks for the report, HoD  :thumbsup.

Lennon - Only played the first half (anyone know why?).
Lennon has had two concussions in 3 weeks in the VFL. So he's very unlikely to play this week in either grade.

I think there's a common theme coming out of HOD's match report......

Slow, lazy, doesn't have a clue and not fit enough.

Richmond FC, ruining careers since '83. ™
The club that keeps giving.

So after watching one game you can write off McBean?
One dimensional?? Lead, mark, kick with good skills??
The guy is 200cm tall and is brilliant at ground level. He had a good set of hands and kicks the ball beautifully. He would be a tough match up in any forwardline.
He has kicked a lot of goals over the last 3 years so he at least deserves another crack at AFL level.
A guy like McBean IMO would be a better player at a better level. Some guys just are.
