Help Needed
« on: December 03, 2005, 11:20:47 AM »
Howdy guys,

Just wondering if anyone can help me out here with my computer.

I appear to have picked up some virus which caused the pc to run very slow and then basically some to a holt. When i try and start up now it just wits there with the windows loading screen and doesnt go any further.

If i restart i can then run in safe mode only, i have run my virus protector and picked up a couple files which contained the virus but i still cant get the computer running properly.

Does anyone know what i should do?

Cheers,

Bull

Download a couple of programs named Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy, install then run them!

If these don't do the job then you might have a rather nasty virus!

What you'd probably then do is, if you run ad-aware a few times, and everytime the same virus keeps coming up, copy down the name of the virus and go to a forum which specialises in nasty virus removal, be warned though that you usually have to wait a fair while for a response!

Try Razor's suggestion first plus run scandisk.

If no virus is picked up and your still having problems, you may need to reinstall windows again from the boot CD to fix any files that may be corrupted.

i was able to get online on the weekend using safe mode until i turned on the computer yesterday and it says that i have to insert the disk to boot up.

I didnt have time to stuff around yesterday but does that mean the windows disc?

I was planning on using an old hard drive tonight hoping to boot up on that one and copy some of my data over.

I have managed to log on here at work using the website that Tiga gave us, project bypass.

Any advise you could post before i go home tonight would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Guys

Im pretty sure you can change the settings in BIOS so it doesn't try to boot from the disk, however i don't know exactly how to do it.

Perhaps someone else knows what im talking about?

Dude,
I just emailed u 3 programs.

I think u will be better off booting from your other hard drive but u may have to reformat and re-install windows unless the drive was taken from the same pc and u havent changed the running gear.

If u cant do that, install the programs in safe mode and set them up to "run at startup"
Then try and boot into normal mode.
If it wont, just re-boot into safe mode and the programs should still run at stratup.
This enables the virus to be detected before it gets into the registry.

it may actually be asking for the system disk if i recall correctly lately, i dont believe that it is a good sign?

If i can hook up this other drive i have at home and then copy over the data i need then i wont be too fussed.

Fingers crossed.

I'd just do a system recovery should get rid of it.  You go back to a shell, but if you've got the disks for your programs shouldn't matter.  I did a system recovery a month or so back - lost everything - and then as soon as i logged on to put my Norton back on i got another bastard straight away.  Ended up ringing this IT place which had a 24 hour number, thinking i could book someone to come and fix.  Woke this bloke up at midnight lol.  I needed a friend to talk to - why should the world be sleeping when i've got a virus lol.

Good luck Bully.

I am currently back online at home  :thumbsup

i have a spare 20 Gib hard drive which i had from another computer so i chucked that in as the master and have got things working.

I will hook up my other drive shortly as a secondary drive and see if i can copy the things i want off the old one.

Ox,

with the other computer i couldnt start it up, when it says insert system disk is that the windows or dos system files that it is after?

i will check your email shortly, still have to update a few things on this pc.

After spending about 3 hours setting up my spare drive, i tried to hook up my old one.

It decided to start in SAFE mode and i ran the programs that the Oxman kindly sent me.

Anyway, it appears to running fine again now and it starting up fine in normal mode also.

thanks for the advice Ox and Razor  :thumbsup

I owe you one  :cheers

If anyone is interested, PC tools "spyware doctor" is without doubt the best spyware catcher I've used and it leaves adaware and other more popular programs for dead. The free trial version scans only but it is well worth paying the modest $30 price tag.

You can check it out here http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/
