Don't ride the Richmond roller coaster: Cotchin

Sam McClure
The Age
May 24, 2016

Just talk to any Tigers fan and you'll find out about the "Richmond roller coaster".

There are downhill spirals where it feels like the brakes have failed and several tunnels of darkness where it feels like you could hit a wall at any stage.

But there are also thrilling heights when it feels like you're on top of the world; where your arms come off the handles and you begin to enjoy the ride.

Either way, Trent Cotchin is urging his teammates not to buy a ticket.

Not for the first time, the Tigers looked to have botched their finals chances early in the year after a string of dismal defeats.

Now, after two impressive wins, Richmond are looking to turn their season around.

"The AFL world likes to encourage this roller coaster," Cotchin said on Tuesday.

"I think the competition is that even now that you need to be at your best every week to give yourself every opportunity to win."

The Tigers lost six of their first seven games, having beaten Carlton narrowly in the round-one opener at the MCG.

They have since turned their form around with a surprise win over premiership contenders Sydney and a gritty victory over the struggling Fremantle Dockers at Domain Stadium.

It's become a consistent theme with Richmond, after the club lost four of its first six games last season, and 10 of its first 13 in 2014.

Both years they went on to make the finals, but lose in the first week of September.

"With rollercoasters, the challenge for a player is to make sure you don't ride them, because that's when it becomes dangerous.

"There are a lot of lows in AFL footy but there are also a lot of highs, so if you can balance that out and keep it at a consistent level than I think that goes a long way to performing at a consistent level."

The lack of consistency at Punt Road has seen several football experts call for an overhaul of the list, with coach Damien Hardwick even admitting earlier in the season that the team may need to take half a step back to take two steps forward.

The Tigers will go into Saturday night's "Dreamtime" clash with Essendon as hot favourites, before a Friday night clash with North Melbourne in Hobart.

Tigers can't ride the rollercoaster, says Cotchin

WITH Richmond's season starting to get back on track, skipper Trent Cotchin says the Tigers' challenge is to stay off the "dangerous" emotional rollercoaster and play consistent football.

After a 1-6 horror start the year, the Tigers are back in the hunt for finals with an enticing stretch of matches to come.

Richmond faces undermanned Essendon in the 'Dreamtime at the 'G' clash this Saturday night and will likely start favourite in three of the next four matches after that.

But if they're to string together a solid patch of form, Cotchin said the Tigers need to stay on a "consistent level".

"Rollercoasters - the challenge for a player is to make sure you don't ride them because that's when it becomes dangerous," Cotchin said.

"There's a lot of lows in AFL footy but there's also a lot of highs, so if you can balance that out, I think it goes a long way to performing at a consistent level."

Cotchin conceded it had been a challenge to keep players upbeat and confident of turning the season around after another slow start.

However, he said wins over the Swans and Fremantle last round had shown what the Tigers were capable of when they put together four quarters.

"Obviously it's a challenge when you are losing to keep people upbeat and instill that confidence – whether it's your senior players or young guys coming into the side," Cotchin said.

"We know exactly what we were doing was going to turn, it was just a matter of stringing those four quarters of consistent performance together.

"We feel as though the last few weeks have been promising results, but we still have a long way to go.

"Confidence and belief is a big thing and your next win is really important because it continues that growth.

"The challenge, as I just spoke about with the rollercoaster, is that even if you do happen to have a loss in the next week, two-week, three-week block, you need to make sure you get back on the horse and do exactly what you know works for you."

Cotchin's return from a fractured cheekbone buoyed the Tigers against Freo on Saturday night, with the helmeted skipper gathering a career-best 39 touches – 18 contested – and 10 clearances.

The 26-year-old said having an enforced two-week lay-off had freshened him up.

"It's obviously not ideal missing games of footy, but what it does do is give you an opportunity to get a little bit of fitness in without the collision stuff you get from the weekend's games," Cotchin said.

"Where I fractured the cheek, it's pretty high-up, so (the helmet) just covers it. It just adds that little bit of cushioning.

"I didn't cop any blows on there on the weekend, so hopefully it will be gone in the next week or two, but you barely notice it once you're out there."

Do you understand the basic concept of a rollercoaster?

Yep, this is the time to get off the roller coaster.

Been on a horrendous down cycle since North final.  Quit in the preseason comp.  Quit against a bunch of reserve teams.

Two wins into a potential up cycle and now he wants to get off the roller coaster.

Really?

You do realise the whole point of a rollercoaster is there will be another down spiral after we go up again?

You understand gravity don't you?  What goes up must come down.

By your definition, only way you would be happy is if we are wooden spooners, because we can't spiral down from there.

How many premierships have Hawthorn won since 1980 compared to us.  They don't put a ceiling on how high they can go because they are scared they might go down occasionally.  Soon as Richmond starts winning, after spiralling down for months, Cotchin gets scared and wants to get off the rollercoaster?

Cotchin has a defeatist attitude.  He is a quitter.  Unless he changes his attitude or is replaced, nothing will change at Richmond.

Culture is everything and Richmond's culture stinks just like this article.

He just enjoys the lows, thrives on them in fact. That's why he's not a fan of sustained success
