Hardwick’s massive call about his Tigers

Herald-Sun
May 26, 2016

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has declared his current playing list the best he’s had at his disposal in seven years at the helm.

When the Tigers cleared Round 7 with just one win in the bank and key players struggling with form and injury troubles, the quality of the list came under question.

Hardwick even suggested the club needed to take a “half step backwards to take two steps forwards” after the Round 3 loss to Adelaide.

“What I sort of meant that in effect we were introducing some new players, some new positions, some young talent that we’re really excited about,” Hardwick told AFL 360.

“We feel in the footy club now as good a list as I think we’ve had at my disposal since I’ve been there. Some of those players we’re yet to see, some you’ve seen a little bit of and they’re going to be incredible players going forward.”

Despite making three straight elimination finals, Hardwick revealed the club recognised it needed to regenerate the list to take the next step. He anticipated the early season “struggle” that produced six straight losses, starting with a one-point loss to Collingwood in Round 2.

“We made the eight last year but we weren’t good enough, we weren’t good enough the year previous, or the year previous to that so we’ve got to continually find players that are going to take us forward,” he said.

“The definition of insanity is continually going back and making the same mistakes.”

Hardwick said the club’s recruiting strategy was “sound” despite football manager Dan Richardson’s suggestion the list profile had been hurt by trying to fast-track its development.

“We’ve brought some wonderful talent onto our list. Shaun Grigg has been an absolute star, Bachar Houli, Ivan Maric, these type of players have come in and been fantastic servants,” he said.

“We are starting to see Shaun Hampson be the player we thought he would. We’ve also added some talent through the draft that’s been incredible.”

Hardwick pointed to the evenness of the competition, form fluctuations and inexperience when explaining their poor start to the season, but says skills errors were the major issue

“We were turning the ball over a lot early. Funnily enough last year it was the same. Early in the year sides are at their fittest, they are running harder, their defensive structures are the strongest they have been,” he said.

However, the return of Brett Deledio and Trent Cotchin from injury and Alex Rance from suspension saw the Tigers turn their season around with wins over Sydney and Fremantle.

Hardwick believes his men are playing with greater confidence and starting to play the sort of football that will help the Tigers add to their three wins this season.

“People probably had a reasonable expectation we’d make finals again this year and we were probably of the same opinion, but our focus firmly is on week to week,” he said.

“We’ve just got to win the next game, which is against Essendon and then we can worry about the game after that. We’ve always been about four week blocks ... then we reassess things.”

Oh boy

There must be a shift in definition of whats called 'Absolute Stars'  - i thought it means, for example top 20 or even top 40 in the afl.

Or is it that anyone gets the 'Absolute Star' trophy if they are finally in form?

Most people would acknowledge that the club now needs to do the hard work to get from middle of the table to top 4 and beyond.
So many clubs have become comfortable making finals over the years only to peak because they failed to realise the effort required to take the club to the next level.
Worse still, clubs took short cuts by recruiting the wrong players in the belief that they would be the answer.
Brisbane, Carlton & Melbourne (early 2000's) are all clubs who were getting to where Richmond are before sliding dramatically because they didn't read the tea leaves as to what would happen next.
I see the same behaviours - particularly in list management and player talent assessment going on which I hope is just a front by the club for the media  :pray
Now is the time for Richmond to overhaul the list - Hampson, Chappy, Morris, Hunt, A Moore & Townsend are players that at very best hold you at mid table but more than likely take you down the ladder.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Wasn't Grigg and Houli recruited as ready made players in his first or second year as coach?  Hardwick was also gifted Dusty, and Cotchin overcame his injury problems so he was like a fresh recruit under Hardwick as well.  He has had a better list than Wallace for about 7 years now.

Like to think if our recruiting was so good, he could highlight a more recent success story that the club has developed from within.

Agree Dooks, Grigg is a long way from being a star.  The fact that Hardwick thinks he is, just shows how deluded he is.  But then again, we know the club is full of liars.  Just ask Dan Richardson what the real plan is for Richmond?

Go onto channel 7 or 9, not sure and search RFC Funniest Home Videos, you will then need to filter that lot out because there will be many of them.
