David King: Richmond’s leaders failed when it mattered most

Richmond’s leadership group went missing when they had to step up at the crucial moments of Friday night’s 70 point thumping to North Melbourne in Hobart, says David King.

The former Kangaroos premiership player slammed the way the Tigers started the game and the second half, labelling their opening ten minutes of third quarter as embarrassing.

King believes Richmond’s leaders, particularly in the middle of the ground, did nothing to stop the rout that led to the Roos kicking five goals in under five minutes after half-time to destroy any hope the Tigers had of winning and keeping their stuttering season on-track.

“They got slaughtered in clearances in that passage,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.

King has put Richmond’s fall from a 15-win season last year to their current 4-7 record on a similar level to Fremantle’s disastrous 2016 after finishing top four last year.

“I had Richmond top four or five at the start of the year. From the finishing point last year to where they are now, it’s not too dissimilar to Fremantle,” he said.

“It’s a huge drop, it really is a significant drop. A massive dip. You’re not adding Yarran if you think you’re just a middle of the road side.”

Mark Robinson agreed, calling Richmond’s performance meek.

“(Richmond were) extremely disappointing. There’s anger now at Richmond, from Richmond fans,” he said.

“The most disappointing thing about last night’s performance was the meekness.”

Dermott Brereton was of the mindset that the injury to Dylan Grimes two minutes before the game started was a massive loss to the Tigers despite the defender not being an elite AFL player.

“It’s a hard thing to say about the Tiges but players who aren’t champions, when they lose those players it still hurts them,” said Brereton

“Dylan Grimes is a league player. He’s not a champion, he’s no bunny... he is capable of filling a role. But if they lose him they have no universal backman who can play on a marking forward of mid-to-taller size, a Jack Gunston size, and then do the natural changeover to a Lindsay Thomas.

“The only one that can do it is (Alex) Rance and even then you don’t want him on the super small quick ones to turn him around. He’s the only one that can do it but he’s needed everywhere. So someone like Dylan Grimes becomes so important.”

Mentally fragile and have been for a long time, doesnt take much to go wrong for the leaders to simply roll over. A big cleanout is required and on a positive note if the cleanout is done properly then it should be the start of a new chapter.

Things just cant go on the way they are with the club meekly accepting the participants award each season and then feeling good about ourselves, it simply doesn't cut the mustard any more.

We need a winning culture and if that means cutting some familiar faces and club stalwarts loose then so be it .

DIMMA - You will be held ACCOUNTABLE...

“We are really excited about what we have brought in. We have got great depth of players that can take us where we need to go. We are just putting some cream on the top at the moment,” he said.

Hampson was doing ok in the ruck. It was our non present midfielders who were weak. several times only the Roos mids were on the move at the centre bounce. It was shocking. Watch the replay again & take note

Well there were few of taps where the North players didn't even have to move as Hamspud put straight down their throats, but apart from that, how do you reckon went around the ground during the other 95% of his game?

That goes back to our mids not doing their jobs. Hampson only has to roam around the back line as Vickery & Griffiths do most of the ground work

Monk
Watched reply twice
Amazing how bad Martin , Edwards and Miles were at stoppages
Flat footed , play from behind spectating
Interesting that Grigg and Cotchin push forward and read the tap
The other 3 were useless

I notice he'd tap it to Majeks feet quite often

A grand plan megan.

That's the onballers fault
No the ruckman
Onballers stand behind there opponents
You don't get full use
End of story

Love how stupid Hampson can be tapping the ball goal side in our D50. Opposition midfielders must love the ball in our D50 because no matter who taps it, it's going to a dangerous position

Breretons comments are so so spot on. It sums us up as far as depth and the lack of qulity goes.We struggle to cover for just plain average players yet alone high quality players.
This has been the case for years it is about time the media started to catch on.

People complain about injuries this season, im gunna ask again what high quality ones have we lost for significant periods this year.I am a firm believer that the lack of injuries (this year aside we have had our share  this year)  over the last 4 or 5 years has hurt us in a funny sort of way.
