David King: Richmond’s leaders failed when it mattered mostJustin Talent

04 Jun 2016, 02:11PMRichmond’s leadership group went missing when they had to step up at the crucial moments of Friday night’s 70 point thumping to North Melbourne in Hobart, says David King.
The former Kangaroos premiership player slammed the way the Tigers started the game and the second half, labelling their opening ten minutes of third quarter as embarrassing.
King believes Richmond’s leaders, particularly in the middle of the ground, did nothing to stop the rout that led to the Roos kicking five goals in under five minutes after half-time to destroy any hope the Tigers had of winning and keeping their stuttering season on-track.
“They got slaughtered in clearances in that passage,” he said on SEN’s Crunch Time.
King has put Richmond’s fall from a 15-win season last year to their current 4-7 record on a similar level to Fremantle’s disastrous 2016 after finishing top four last year.
“I had Richmond top four or five at the start of the year. From the finishing point last year to where they are now, it’s not too dissimilar to Fremantle,” he said.
“It’s a huge drop, it really is a significant drop. A massive dip. You’re not adding Yarran if you think you’re just a middle of the road side.”
Mark Robinson agreed, calling Richmond’s performance meek.
“(Richmond were) extremely disappointing. There’s anger now at Richmond, from Richmond fans,” he said.
“The most disappointing thing about last night’s performance was the meekness.”
Dermott Brereton was of the mindset that the injury to Dylan Grimes two minutes before the game started was a massive loss to the Tigers despite the defender not being an elite AFL player.
“It’s a hard thing to say about the Tiges but players who aren’t champions, when they lose those players it still hurts them,” said Brereton
“Dylan Grimes is a league player. He’s not a champion, he’s no bunny... he is capable of filling a role. But if they lose him they have no universal backman who can play on a marking forward of mid-to-taller size, a Jack Gunston size, and then do the natural changeover to a Lindsay Thomas.
“The only one that can do it is (Alex) Rance and even then you don’t want him on the super small quick ones to turn him around. He’s the only one that can do it but he’s needed everywhere. So someone like Dylan Grimes becomes so important.”
