Hardwick keeps faith in his players

Herald-Sun
9 June 2016

RICHMOND will not use the second half of the season to determine which direction it takes its sputtering playing list.

Coach Damien Hardwick reaffirmed he believes the 2016 list is the best in his seven years at the club and said it was also one of the AFL’s youngest.

The 4-7 Tigers have the chance to beat up on the weak Queensland clubs — hosting Gold Coast on Sunday and Brisbane Lions after the bye — and Hardwick has not given up on reaching a fourth-straight elimination final.

Champion Data analysis in the Herald Sun this week rated Richmond a 1 per cent mathematical chance of qualifying for September.

The 14th-placed Tigers pipped Sydney and thrashed stragglers Fremantle and Essendon before last week’s “embarrassing” 70-point loss to North Melbourne.

Hardwick lashed his side effort against the Roos and conceded it was wildly inconsistent and had underperformed this year.

“We know our best footy is capable of beating anyone in the competition,” he said.

“Unfortunately (due to) the inconsistency we’ve seen this year we’re capable of getting beaten by any side in the competition as well, which is not where we want to be.

“The measure of a great footy club is when you’re playing poorly you can still win games.

“Unfortunately when we play poorly we’re getting beaten quite handsomely.”

But Hardwick said he still had “incredible faith” in his group.

“I’ll back my players to the hilt. There’s a reason they’re at our footy club; they can play,” he said.

“We’ve got some quality young lads we feel in the seconds that at the moment that will push up for opportunities when their form permits.

“It’s amazing, you can win three games, lose one the way we lost and feel like the whole world is caving in.”

Hardwick rated the Kangaroos his side’s toughest opponent for the year, owing to their fierce pressure and contested-ball dominance.

North loss has rocked Tigers
AAP
09/06/2016

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick admits the scale of last Friday’s AFL loss to North Melbourne rocked the club.

Hardwick’s own belief in the team is being tested as the Tigers navigate a tough season.

After going a long way to putting their year back on track with three-straight wins, the Tigers were woeful in Hobart and North took them apart by 70 points.

They also suffered several injuries, with Steve Morris needing a knee reconstruction and out for 12 months.

“It’s amazing how you can win three games, lose one the way we lost and feel like the whole world is caving in,” Hardwick said.

Hardwick said he felt his players did not give enough effort in the loss to the Kangaroos.

"I expect leadership from all 22 players who take the field. What I also expect is incredible effort which I don't feel like we gave over the weekend," Hardwick said.

“From a perspective inside our building, it was a little bit the same – really disappointed in our performance.

“Injuries were no excuse, we were by far out of the contest.

“Initially, North’s onslaught was outstanding … they’re the best side we’ve played this year, by far.”

Richmond are now dangling off the cliff at 4-7 halfway through season, three games out of the top eight.

They can still make their fourth-straight finals campaign, but a lot must go right and they must beat Gold Coast this Sunday at the MCG.

“There’s been a lot of talk, we just have to make sure we put that talk into action because we were really embarrassed with our performance last week,” Hardwick said.

The Tigers had expected a lot better from this season and Hardwick admits it has unsettled him.

“It (his belief) gets shaken every game … you ask any senior coach after a loss, it’s lonely,” Hardwick said.

“When you become accustomed to winning a lot of games, it becomes harder to lose.

“We have incredible faith in our coaches, our playing group, our club as a whole, but we’ve been underperforming this year.”

Reece Conca is ready for his first senior game this season, while ruckman Ivan Maric could also return.

Hardwick said it was unclear whether other players hurt in the North match would play against the Suns.

“The other guys are putting up their hands at this stage, but we’ll wait and see how that goes with Thursday training,” Hardwick said.

The Tigers coach said inconsistent form, rather than the demographics of their list, has hurt them so far this year.

“We still have incredible faith in the group we have here,” he said.

“It is a little bit transitional, but we know our best footy is capable of beating any side in the competition.

“Unfortunately, the inconsistency we’ve seen this year, we’re capable of getting beaten by any side in the competition as well.

“The measure of a great footy club is when you’re playing poorly, that you can still win the game – unfortunately when we play poorly, we’re getting beaten quite handsomely.”

Wallace is an expert in the art of delusion.
It's that simple Spud
"I discussed (it) with my three daughters, my wife and my 82-year-old mum, because it has really affected me … If those comments … were made about one of my daughters, it would make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I would not have liked it at all.”

Preparing supporters for the inevitable backing down at the selection table given we have a winnable game this week.

At last weeks presser it was "the way the team played we have to make changes" to "incredible faith in this group". Sounds to me most of the passengers will continue with their free ticket with Hardwicks delusion having him believe the switch will suddenly flick and we will be premiership contenders.

Sad to say it but in the best interests of the club a loss to the GC could be the best result.

bottom line is yep, we need to start losing these types of games, can you imagine the garbage that will be coming out of punt road after we win the next 2 to go 6-7?
