Dusty, then who?
« on: June 10, 2016, 09:10:51 AM »
Dusty was drafted at pick 3 in the 2009 AFL National Draft and has gone on to be a star for us.
Who has been our best draft pick since that pick 3, 7 drafts ago?

Not only haven't we picked up a star since then, but it's even hard to pick a player that most on here would agree is a good consistent player. In 7 drafts the numbers speak for themselves IMO.

Our list is where it is because of this simple fact.

Forget Moneyball, the thing that has held us back is our recruiting.

Top picks = top players.  Since Dusty, when did we last give our recruiters a top pick to work with?    :-\

This is against popular opinion but Conca , B.Ellis , Vlastuin,  Lennon and C Ellis can all play . One wonders where they would be if they were drafted by a more successful club.

I suspect their development has been stifled by poor player development , a poor club culture and a ridiculous game plan.

Dusty might already be a Brownlow medalist if he played elsewhere.

If Vlastuin had never been moved from the midfield, Lennon had at least 40 matches under his belt like he should have by now and maybe even if B.Ellis had been held to same standards as Lennon and forced to earn his spot,(always been a squib but I can still remember the long penetrating kicks from his early days and his excellent marking) then I suspect this thread may not have been necessary.

Conca's just a hack.....C.Ellis is on the fine line of becoming another B.Ellis or a very good player....Menadue could be anything but is another whose attacking instincts appear to have been stifled (why doesn't he ever use his pace for a start?) ....I rate Butler -probably highest of last year's draftees- but since his injury he seems to have gone backwards and  my thoughts on McBean have been expressed many times elsewhere and will continue to be while ever the ignorance of some prevail...our crappy VFL side and stale gameplan is sucking all the flair and natural ability out of these kids....

100% correct along with list management and development. But hey ive been going about this for longer than Hardwick has been there.
Your a smart man and so i think you will agree there is not a lot that determines where you can get to, but Recruitment and the other two are just about the be all end all.

Corey Ellis got rekt straight up give the poor bastard a chance.  Vlastuin should of been our hard mid instead of these discards we keep clogging the list with.  Conca, God knows what vapors they were sniffing when they came up with that cunning bit of skullduggery, so cunning, so clever a pick that nobody saw it coming.  Satan himself was surprised at such a diabolical waste of pick six and shook his head at the cruelty of it.

EllisC will end up being the best since Dusty. Floss second, still holding out hope on Lennon.

Grimes in 2010 pre season draft is the best since Dusty.

Injuries have been cruel.

Why do we need to hand them a top 3 pick to land a star? Are they that bad (yes they are).

Fiora pick 2
Tambling pick 4
Conca pick 6
Vickery pick 8
