Hardwick laments Tigers' lack of 'killer instinct'

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick bemoaned the Tigers' lack of "killer instinct" as they failed to meet his 20-goal challenge against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday.

While the Tigers posted a seven-goal win at the MCG, and their fifth from the past six matches, Hardwick was not impressed with how his men finished the contest, having led by 56 points in the third term.

The Lions booted five goals to three in the final term, and Hardwick even ventured down to the bench to express his displeasure, as the Tigers finished with 17 goals.

"I thought for 2½ quarters we were pretty good, but we probably didn't capitalise on the scoreboard at various stages. Then I thought that instead of the killer instinct we were looking for, we probably got complacent," Hardwick said.

"There were a couple of phases of play, I thought, towards the back end of the third quarter – Lloydy [Sam Lloyd] takes a mark 15 metres out and tries to handball over the top, Shane [Edwards] trying to tap the ball over his head – that is the sort of play I would prefer us to steer away from.

"I am after a clinical-like performance. That's probably the difference between us and the upper-echelon sides. We are a little bit off at the moment."

Hardwick said it had been important to get his message across on the bench.

"It was either that or smash a phone up there, so I found it a little bit better coming downstairs and saying, 'They are outplaying us, so lift,' " he said.

"It's not as if they are deliberately not trying – it's just the fact that the game was probably done and dusted but we are looking to put our foot on their throat, so to speak."

Star midfielder Dustin Martin continued his strong six weeks and was best afield, strengthening his claims for the Brownlow Medal. He had 35 disposals, including six clearances and 10 inside 50s.

Ruckman Shaun Hampson limped from the field with a sore knee in the final term, but scans are expected to pass him fit to face Port Adelaide in Adelaide on Friday night.

The Tigers dominated the inside 50 count 59-34 and were well served by Trent Cotchin, Brandon Ellis and Anthony Miles.

"We were looking for a big finish. We challenged our guys to kick 20 goals … it was disappointing to finish like that," Hardwick said.

He said late withdrawals Jake Batchelor (back/hamstring) and Ben Griffiths (illness) would be available this week.

Hardwick also defended the performance of key forward Ty Vickery, who had one goal alongside Jack Riewoldt (four), declaring he had brought the ball to ground when required.

"I thought his game was serviceable," he said.

'I'm after a clinical performance', says Hardwick

RICHMOND'S inability to finish off its opposition remains a barrier to it becoming one of the competition's better teams, says coach Damien Hardwick.

The Tigers led by 56 points at the last break and Hardwick challenged his team to capitalise on the advantage against a Brisbane Lions outfit that was on the verge of its 10th consecutive loss.

Instead, the Lions registered 5.6 in the final term and narrowed the margin to 42 points.

Wastefulness was a particular frustration for Hardwick.

"Instead of the killer instinct that we were looking for, we probably got complacent," the coach said.

"There were a couple of phases of play towards the back-end of the third quarter: (Sam) Lloyd takes a mark and we try to handball over the top, Shane (Edwards) trying to tap the ball over his head. That sort of play I prefer us to steer away from.

"I'm after a clinical-like performance. That's probably the difference between us and the upper echelon sides."

Hardwick came down to the bench early in the final quarter to reinforce the message to his players.

"It was either that or smash the phone up there - I felt a little bit better coming downstairs to say ‘they're outplaying us, so lift’," he said.

The Tigers set themselves the task of booting six goals in the fourth term, but instead could only slot three.

"We challenged our guys to kick 20 goals … it was disappointing to finish like that," he said.

Richmond has kicked 20 goals in a match since its 91-point defeat of Collingwood in round 21 last year.

Hardwick said his team played well for just two-and-a-half quarters and suggested improving the side's proficiency in attack was a key.

"Ability to score from our inside-50 entries, I thought today we weren't efficient. I think we're one of the better sides, we'd like to get that better again," he said.

"We probably left a few goals on the table. We'll continue to work on that. Overall, you have 32 shots on goal, you walk away reasonably happy with that."

Ty Vickery was one of those who missed opportunities in attack. He finished with 1.1 and two goal assists.

His last three matches have seen Vickery collect 21 disposals, but Hardwick defended the key forward.

"I thought he was pretty reasonable today. He had his hands on a couple that probably should have stuck," Hardwick said.

"He's providing a contest for us – that's a big thing with Ty.

"He's been a little bit inconsistent at times, but we're prepared to back him in."

Tall forward Ben Griffiths (illness) and Jake Batchelor (hamstring tightness) should be available next Friday against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval after being late outs, while ruckman Shaun Hampson will have scans after hurting his right knee late in the contest.

Hardwick expects him to face the Power.

"At this stage we don't think it's serious," he said.

Dimma fury Tigers didn’t put Lions away

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick admitted his side lacks a killer instinct after the Tigers failed to bury an abysmal Brisbane Lions.

The Tigers led by 56 points at three-quarter time at the MCG, but were outscored 5.6 to 3.4 in a last quarter that prompted an angry Hardwick to walk to the bench looking for answers.

“It was either that or smash a phone up there,” Hardwick said of his decision to leave the coaches box.

“It was better to go down there and say they’re outplaying us, so lift.”

Hardwick gave his players a target of 20 goals. They finished with 17.15 after botching a handful of opportunities in the second half.

“There was a couple of phases of play ... towards the back end of the third quarter. ‘Lloydy’ (Sam Lloyd) takes a mark 15m out, we try to handball over the top, Shane (Edwards) trying to tap the ball over his head. That’s the sort of play I’d prefer us to steer away from,” Hardwick said.

“I’m after a clinical-like performance and that’s probably the difference between us and the upper echelon sides.”

Hardwick said his side was “good” for two and a half quarters.

“We probably didn’t capitalise on the scoreboard at various stages and I thought that instead of the killer instinct that we were looking for we probably got complacent,” he said.

“It’s one of those things; it’s not as if they’re deliberately not trying. The game was probably done and dusted, but we’re looking to put our foot on their throat so to speak. To Brisbane’s credit they fought back pretty well.

“I would have liked to have played a bit better towards the back end of the game. It was one of those frustrating games where we couldn’t quite get the dominance early that we were after and to finish off as we did was disappointing.

“We were looking for a big finish. We left a few goals on the table, I’d say.”

Hardwick praised Dustin Martin for another standout game and was encouraged by the efforts of Connor Menadue, Jayden Short and debutant Nathan Broad.

He said late withdrawals Ben Griffiths (virus) and Jake Batchelor (virus) would be available for next week’s trip east to face Port Adelaide.

:lol I think most coaches want the ball brought to ground IF the mark isn't taken. Most forwards look like they are at least in a position to take the mark. Vickery however just runs and half jumps into packs with his arms not even stretched out to look like he's making a contest and that's when he even bothers to try and "contest"

Yeah I was furious too. Almost left half way through the last quarter. Should have been a 70+ point win IMO.
