Lack of mid-tier talent holding Tigers back, says Chaplin

AFL.com.au
28 July 2016

A WEEK after announcing his immediate retirement from AFL football, Richmond defender Troy Chaplin says a lack of mid-tier talent is what is holding the club back from success.

Chaplin said there was frustration within the playing group that had claimed the scalps of the League's best teams in recent years, but failed to fire in the finals.

"Obviously you can't keep going back to the well if you can't get over the line, so we've got to try something different, add some new players too – so that's what they'll be looking at this year," Chaplin told SEN on Thursday.

Richmond triumphed over a previously undefeated Fremantle side in round 10 last year as well as eventual premiers Hawthorn in round 18, only to lose for a third straight year in the first week of the finals.

"I think that's where the frustration lies, especially internally as players ... it's exactly the same group and the same 22 that took us to those spots, it's just that we couldn't get over the line," Chaplin said.

"Our top five are really great players, we need that middle tier coming through."

Chaplin said the Tigers, who won't make the finals in 2016, are lacking players in their mid to late twenties.

"Between 23 and 29, we don't really have many players in that age group and that's what is probably going to help us going forward," he said.

"You don't want to go full rebuild, we've got some younger guys coming through, we just lack a little bit of class."

Seems to have a habit of offering his opinion and advice regarding club's deficiencies once he's finished playing for them.

Our lack of decent mid-tier talent is due in no small part to list clogging recycled old hacks like you Troy.....

Troy is 100% correct.

First round draft picks like Vickery ,Griffiths, Conca , B.Ellis , Vlastuin and Lennon seem incapable of stepping up and helping the "Fab Five" which is hugely disappointing.  They have all shown signs but never bring it week in week out.

I think the club expected  more significant contributions from the above players in 2016. This is a major reason to why we have flopped .

Conca and  Lennon can't even stay on the park , Ditto Corey Ellis.

Lennon can't help if he's never given a game.

There are worse than vlastuin running around.

Rather than complain about Corey Ellis , the issu is Chaplin / Houli / grigg / Morris / Hampson types are mature ,  senior players and all still 'low level talent'. Rather than 'middle graders' that can step up and assit when it counts

more should have got mentioned twice as well, and perhaps maric.
chaplin also could have doubled up for effect

Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

Not sure if you have paid attention but fail and dimwit have made similar comments before. Why it's an issue is because it took the idiots 3/4 years to work out what people already knew.

Ironic that it's came from a player who was part of the issue. Then again it's not his fault he got selected rather the fools above him.

yet that doesnt stop the bagging of him, even though those comments are not too dissimilar from one of the multitude of whines we get bombarded with on here

I think he's right but I also think it's pretty funny when someone who was part of the problem waits until they retire to point out the problem as if they weren't....especially someone who did something similar when they left their previous club...
